I just love how you choose one thing from your house to work on at a time. When i first saw your house tour i was overwhelmed for you and wondered how on earth you would renovate it all while living there but you make it look so fun.
I'm just not sure everyone can TRULY appreciate the work this takes unless you have reno-ed an old house yourself. The grit of disintegrated old foam carpet backing, the feeling of levering those flaking layers of flaminated floor cloverings, removing thousands of bent nails and staples, the smell of old wood when you cut it. I've ( my ex-husband and I) - redid a 1950s brick duplex with a beautifiul sun room with glass French doors, and then we had a house built- sooo boring, NEVER felt like a home. Then divorced and bought a1930s Sears catalogue house ( yup -that was thing) and went to my local vo-tech school and learned basic electrical, woodworking tools, plumbing and other basic and redid it myself. @@allentowngal4769 OMG, I'm obsessed with your comment and the fact that you actually lived in a Sears catalogue house!!! I watched an old documentary on them and couldn't believe it. I was sharing with my mom all of the different style homes you could choose out of a catalogue?!?!? It literally blew my mind. Apparently (or at least according to the doc) they were really well built as well as they put a lot of craftsmanship into them in those days.
My two cents as an art conservator in training : Blues can be very tricky to work with, blue pigments are prone to metamerism, which is basically when colors seem to match under one lighting condition, but look completely different under different lighting. So getting a good match to that picture would be tricky, as it might work well in the store, but not anymore once you get home ! And you should always wear a solvant proof mask when working with paintstripers. They can contain very dangerous chemicals (we avoid them at all cost in the studio because they're quite dangerous) and even with an open door, you're working right above where you apply the stripper, so you're right above the fumes and end up inhaling just as much solvant ! The amount of work and the attention to details you're putting into your house is admirable, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos !
Metamerism, wow. I learned a new word today, thank you! That makes a lot of sense about blues. In some historical sources, sapphires that were blue in daylight would be noted to appear black under candle light; we know now that this has to do with sunlight containing a higher amount of green light, while candle light has a lot more red. I could totally see the specific chemistry of a blue paint and how it absorbs light making it hard to match in different circumstances!
@@kristenfader2088 Currently doing my Master's in Switzerland on archaeological and ethnographic objects conservation. Did my BA in Paris. What about you ?
Absolutely, paint stripers should not be inhaled! We invested in really good masks made for these type of fumes and use them not only for such aggressive solvents. Rather safe than sorry. It is uncomfortable at the beginning to wear the full shabang, but you quickly get used to wearing it. Even the good masks are absolutely affordable and it pays to get the best when you are redoing a whole house. By the way, if one has many old doors that need to be striped, one can also have them picked up by a professional who dips them into a bath of solvent and bringt them back all ready to be painted.
Yes indeed is a difficult color. You need to look at large samples through all times of the day for several days to see if you still like it under all kinds of light conditions. Same with other saturated colors.

My favorite thing is that you’re not taking this glorious old house and trying to force it to look like a modern minimalist house. It’s so artistic and beautiful 😍 I just adore what you’ve done with it!
I love that that green and oh my god that hand rail is beautiful. The only thing i think i would of done differently is make the floor a dark wood like the hand rail. Just to balance it out. I can't wait to see what you do with the upstairs section though. :)
This is exactly what I was thinking! I love the colour and the reno was amazing, you're learning so much and gaining so many skills!! But I feel like the floor or ceiling or moulding needs some definition in a darker/lighter green, white, black, brown? The floors matching the spindles would be amazing!
I agree that the floor shoudl've been different, maybe the doors and trim as well. I got kind of nausceous looking at all of that green on the floors, wall, doors, *and* ceiling.

Hi! Looks grand! Amazing how the finish on the spindles matched the newl post perfectly. You are working so hard. Maybe it's time for a mini house tour of the rooms you've redone. Also, next time you need to strip paint, use EASY OFF NO FUME oven cleaner. It totally works!! No fumes, and works great.
This came out so beautifully! I'm renovating a 97 year old craftsman style home, and your videos have been a huge inspiration! I gush about these to my husband all the time. We actually just recently (as in two weeks ago) painted the hardwood in our living & dining room. I had a "safe" color all picked out (blue-grey), but once I was at the store picking out the exact shade, my husband just leaned towards me and whispered, "what if we did purple?" So now our living and dining room floors are lavender! It's amazing how much it feels like I'm a character in a story now, and I know it never would have happened without your influence, so thank you for taking the time to make these videos and share them
I think the stairs would look amazing with a runner coming down, either cream or a maroon dark red color. Also I really wish the floor would have been stained to match the railing, but I have no idea the conditions of the flooring soooo love it all anyways and love how you're making this your dream home!
The floor and the amazing baseboards and molding of the doorwys stripped of paint and stained to match the railing would be close to original glory of the home! Those massive baseboards and moldings in wood tones is what dreams are made of
Renovating a staircase while it is in use. There should be an award for that. But then, you have the reward of a job well done. It's gorgeous. (Also truly appreciate your fearlessness with color!)
If you work with paint stripper or stinky paints or even opening a drain, get a proper respirator- the kind the people who lacquer cars have. They are actually easier to wear with glasses than the tight corona masks we have nowadays, because they have a vent downwards, so no fogged glasses. And yes, you can wear them when opening disgusting stuff to XD. I put them on changing the u part of my sink.

It's really beautiful. Personally I would have changed out the light fixture because you have a gorgeous medallion on the ceiling that just needs something more then a generic circular light fixture. I really wish you would have painted the trim along the side of the stairs a different color so they could pop and not blend in.
That banister and the “new” spindles look AMAZING! The whole time when you put the new spindles in I was thinking “please don’t paint them, please don’t paint them, please don’t paint them.” It looks so good! Thank you also for including that the colour is in reality more of a sage colour because in that footage it totally changes the feeling of the room. Beautiful colour. Never would have painted the ceiling green! 😳 I would have left it white for height & light. I also would have painted the insets on the side of the staircase white. But hey, it’s your house! 😃 Live these design vids!!!
I think, if the monochromatic look was the intent, using the darker green version of the paint on all the moulding would give better contrast. That banister/railing looks a little out of place, I think the room would look more cohesive with another variation of that green as an accent color
Yes, the area is looking quite dark overall. I'm all for tons of color in rooms but like hallways and staircases light and neutral. But just getting rid of the old carpets was bound to make it look a ton better and the new spindles do look great.
I would have thought an all green room would be horrible. But, wow it looks great… you kinda have a Victorian vibe going on. The stair bannister looks beautiful. Your doing a great job on your house.
I think the green works so well because the banister is red and the rooms adjacent are pink/reddish and so colour theory wise, it checks out! Also, you've gotta love a good rug and that is a GOOD rug
Really good job! I hope you get a dope chandelier off FB for the entry way, i think that would add so much contrast and charm. The house is looking so cool!
This is BY FAR the best room makeover that you have done so far. I am just blown away by how amazing it turned out! I have to admit that I didn’t trust your vision for the space when you were at about the midpoint of the renovation-it looked a mess. But wow! Was I ever wrong to doubt! Someday if you can find a chandelier on Facebook marketplace, this room deserves a sparkly lighting centerpiece.
I saw a story recently about Mt. Vernon , President Washington's home, they found the original paint color of this room so they restored it. It was an vibrant emerald and the trim, ceiling, mantle everything was painted because that's what colonials did. So you're beautiful entry is a revival of a bygone era. I truly think you did an amazing job, just gorgeous especially looking through to the color of the sofa.
that staircase already looked hundred times better without the carpet omg,the green and dark wood together look so beautiful, im convinced ill do this in a house if i ever get one.
I appreciate how your interior design choices are entirely your own, and not exactly like all the current trends. As much as I love a lot of the homes we see nowadays, it's refreshing to see someone style a home in a unique way :) keep it up!
I love seeing you choose things for your house that you love and enjoy, and aren't focusing on whats currently "trendy" (not that that's a bad thing necessarily, but there's a lot of channels of people re-doing the same rooms over and over to keep up with whats in style!). I feel like your house is going to age beautifully because you love every item inside of it! Also your videos always help with my anxiety, you've created a really kind atmosphere. Thank you for all of your work!
Getting rid of that ugly old carpet is so satisfying, so thank you for that! 😂. Also, I'm obsessed with the new spindles! I recently just remodeled the stairs in my old house, and painted everything white, except the tops of each step is black, and it turned out so beautifully! Can't wait to see more of your home reno videos to inspire me to continue renovating my home!
I was trying to explain to my parents that I want my future house to look like yours. They don't know who you are 😂 But I explained the magic you're bringing into your home while you make it your own and the bold color choices and the warmth and personality 🥰 I love it so much and I love seeing your house renovation journey!
Beautiful work!!! I love how you leave the original features but still have fun with the space. Its so vital to leave the original features in these structures but you can still have fun with them :)). Also I noticed you have BEAUTIFUL original windows which I hope you keep! Its a myth that old windows are obsolete and not very efficient. They just need to be reglazed and weather stripped which you can find so many articles online on how to do your self! It would be cheaper and better in the long run to keep the old windows. Replacement windows are cheap and if they break you have to replace the whole window and they only last about 15 years. Old wood windows last hundreds of years if maintained and can be repaired and restored indefinitely, not to mention the quality of materials and wood are impossible to get today. Sorry I am blabbering on about this I am just very passionate about this subject because so many home owners chuck their original windows which ruins the integrity and look of historic homes and these original windows cannot be replaced. :)
Uhg I was held in nervous suspense as you started to paint the floor in the same color. But I love how it came out!! You were so right to paint every detail that beautiful shade, and how clever to paint every other stair haha. Keep it up
the green works so well as a transitional colour from the living room to your study and especially it compliments the green couch so well!! you guys did such a good job
This is probably my favorite renovation you have done so far!! This look AMAZING!! I love the color you chose and the banister looks so beautiful! What a beautiful beautiful room!
Honestly I threw this video on to have Ariel's voice in the background because it's so soothing but then when I flipped back to the video and saw that shade of green...HUGE heart eyes!! It's so beautiful!
Your cut off top spindle reminded me of when a family member was remodeling an older home in the city. A lot of the older 2 stories homes would be divided into apartments, so any type of decorative post at that top landing would be damaged by tenants moving in and out over time. In my family members case you could see there had originally been a decorative ball that had been broken off.
That’s a really good observation. I’m currently renovating my family’s 1890s home. I have a grand staircase with a lot of decorative elements but two of my orbs that would have been on the staircase are missing/broken off. At first I thought the damage was done from “architectural scavengers” who have been known to steal decorative elements from houses in my part of town to help furnish or restore houses in wealthier parts of my city but recently I found a picture from the 70s where all the orbs were present. My grandparents bought the house in 1962 and they did their best to keep all the remaining Victorian woodwork so it didn’t make sense that they would break/remove the orbs. But the two broken/missing orbs are in places where the staircase has a corner and if I was moving furniture, I can see how they might get damaged. My grandparents had a lot of kids and a lot of furniture for all the bedrooms. Who knows who broke the orbs but it probably came from moving heavy furniture to and from the 3rd and 2nd floor.
It turned out amazing! I do think that wall going up the stairs needs some art, but totally agree that it needs to tie into the upstairs. Looking forward to seeing more progress from your house. Your fearlessness with color is inspiring me!
This is such an inspiring series! I SO admire how dedicated you are to the projects! I would end up getting one wall painted and then saying ehhhh good enough...but this house is just beautiful and I am so glad to watch this!
Imho I think the blue was being tricky because the stairwell was always meant to be green. The way it picks up on the green of the sofa feels very intentional and just gorgeous 😍
I looooooove this hallway ❤ so so beautiful! The green everywhere is so perfect! I watched many videos that came after this, but I wanted to watch the actual renovation of the hallway ❤
I wasn't sure about the green paint at first but you've convinced me that painting floors is *chef's kiss* and that color looks like it always belonged there. Absolutely love the finished look (especially with your Christmas decorations!) and I'm excited to see the rest in this series.
I just want to say! I've watched three or four of your reno videos today & I LOVE the delicate classical music behind your timelapse shots! There's just something about the juxtaposition of the hard work & the beautiful and whimsical music, like feminity and hard work are not dichotomous- if that makes sense hihi
Bo Burnham’s casual existential dread playing in the background while you painted your Emma (2020) house is a mood™. It’s been my mo for months now as well…
Even though my personal style is much less colorful, I just love how you're designing this house! It's got so much character and you can clearly see the love you're putting into the whole process. Really beautiful, keep up the great work! ✨
I love that shade of green, although I would have left the white trims and ceiling to brighten it up/break it up a little bit. Can't wait to see you add decorations later on!
I would love a video on how you are handling the renovation with your chronic pain. I have chronic pain and I feel like it keeps me from doing so many things so your videos are very inspiring!
I love that you called it a room. Nobody thinks of stairwells and hallways as rooms, but they each take as much time and effort as a room. I foolishly punctured the paint bubbles on the trim in my stairwell and quickly discovered that if I wanted to avoid breathing lead paint, I had to strip it. Super long time and effort addition. For future reference: SoyGel. It's made in the Midwest of the USA, so shipping to Canada might get pricey quickly. It's effective, doesn't have a strong smell, is mild enough on skin you can do it bare-handed. Drawback? You probably need to let it work overnight before scraping off layers and layers and layers of paint. If you leave it on overnight, it'll get numerous layers all at once. Question: did painting the ceiling green make the room darker? I've been painting ceiling white because I need all the bounced like possible in all the rooms. I hired painters for the exterior and they were surprised I wanted the front porch ceiling to be a very light blue. Well, the front porch overhang is 9 feet deep and instead of it reflecting gray from the previous paint job, I wanted a cheerful blue color for the six months of winter we have.
Your house and all the colours are reminding me more and more of the Nanny McPhee house from the movie and that's the biggest compliment because I've always been obsessed with that house wanting to live there myself
Your dad has the PERFECT voice for audiobooks. Also spectacular stairs etc etc but also THIS MAN SHOULD READ CLASSICS ALOUD FOR MONEY.

"A Carful of Spindles" should be the title of some modern poetry book.
AGREED
Mr Rogers said that the best gift we can give someone is our authentic self. He was right. Thank you for the gift.
Wow I had never considered a “neutral green” but it’s so beautiful - I love your vision!
Your dad is so delightfully Canadian 😅
fwiw, I *adore* these videos and get a little jolt of excitement whenever I see you've posted one
Omg I think about the newel post scene constantly. It’s stuck in my brain, absolutely iconic
That green is like standing in the cool shade of a big old tree.
The way color changes with light is amazing
I love that you and your Dad worked on this project together. These are good Memories you are making along with making your Home Beautiful!
I might do this colour combo, myself!
Black stair risers would make everything pop as well.
I was trying to explain to my parents that I want my future house to look like yours. They don't know who you are 😂 But I explained the magic you're bringing into your home while you make it your own and the bold color choices and the warmth and personality 🥰 I love it so much and I love seeing your house renovation journey!
The green ties in perfectly with your living room couch!!!
Obsessed with how this paint color is picking up the green couch in the next room! Looks incredible.
I love the way you painted it! It really does have a Victorian feel and I love the exposed wood railing!
I always wear a proper mask when paint stripping. Never had any problems with headaches etc.
Your dad should have his own channel with all this building and fixing and renovating advice and themes
13:37 - the universal pre-coffee 'what am I doing?' head nod.
omg, its so gorgeous, moody and beautiful, that wood tone and the green together is just so so so pretty !
This is probably my favorite renovation you have done so far!! This look AMAZING!! I love the color you chose and the banister looks so beautiful! What a beautiful beautiful room!
okay i kind of LOVE how much the light changes the color
Honestly I threw this video on to have Ariel's voice in the background because it's so soothing but then when I flipped back to the video and saw that shade of green...HUGE heart eyes!! It's so beautiful!
The spindles are so beautiful and fit much better with the time period of the original home too
Those spindles are seamless. Perfect.
Loved meeting? Max. Such a handsome boy❤️🐾 So impressed with spindles!
@@tylerbhumphries glad to help solve the mystery.
so nice to finally see the staircase, and also so lovely to see you and your dad work together on some of the project!
The spindles are AMAZING. They look much more original.
It turned out amazing! I do think that wall going up the stairs needs some art, but totally agree that it needs to tie into the upstairs. Looking forward to seeing more progress from your house. Your fearlessness with color is inspiring me!
I’m binge watching your videos in a time of stress with my 123yo old house and your calm is helping me stay calm
Honestly girl, you did that. The Emma vibes are real and idk you but I’m so proud of you.
The green reminds me of go away green that Disney used!! Such a lovely colour and so timeless
I just want to say! I've watched three or four of your reno videos today & I LOVE the delicate classical music behind your timelapse shots! There's just something about the juxtaposition of the hard work & the beautiful and whimsical music, like feminity and hard work are not dichotomous- if that makes sense hihi
The green is so perfect! And the pop of wood in the railing is the cherry on top! Great work!!!
Bo Burnham’s casual existential dread playing in the background while you painted your Emma (2020) house is a mood™. It’s been my mo for months now as well…
These videos are the most wholesome thing on CZcams. I love it here 😭❤️
Yes yes! My favorite series is back 💖🦹♀️ yall dont understand how invested i am in this house revolution 😅
Whoa that is a drastic colour change from the green the camera picked up to the sage colour. TBH, I loved both but the calmer sage is just fantastic!
Before you painted the purple door looked like a door to another world!
Love the end result!
You have blessed my exam day with more house content. May the gods bless you and your future children.
Your office is my absolute favorite room for my own Pinterest board of inspo. I love how easily you mix together color and pattern.
The color change between morning/evening is crazy! Love the spindles and your color choices are spot on! :D
The one color is beautiful. You chose the right tint. It came out awesome! The spindles rock.
I have chronic pain and I feel like it keeps me from doing so many things so your videos are very inspiring!
giving The Little Princess and I LOVE IT
Your house is like your very own coloring book! 🎨 👩🏻🎨
The stair railing is beautiful, what a difference those spindles made.😊
I’ve been loving your home improvement videos, Ariel. Also, I love how sweet and helpful your dad is.
That colour calms my soul
The spindles look to good, they truly belong to that staircase!
There's something so calming and therapeutic both about these videos, but also the vibes you capture in each successive room.
The banister is absolutely beautiful.
I absolutely love how it came out! I love how the green changes with the light throughout the day.
With that hallway less color meant so much more. All that green makes all the details and trim pop out in my opinion
Your house and all the colours are reminding me more and more of the Nanny McPhee house from the movie and that's the biggest compliment because I've always been obsessed with that house wanting to live there myself
