The sweet and beautiful Tina (previously known as Princess Leilani), has just been kidnapped by the Evil Witch Doctor's persistent followers. Eight perilous islands are in control of the various monster minions, although four friendly dinosaurs will gladly ally themselves with those willing to brave the islands' dangers and defeat their common oppressors. Thinking of how grateful his favorite lady will be when he comes to her rescue, Master Higgins embarks on a daunting quest to get to his honey.
Either that or he just was woken up by a falling nut and now seeks to use the entire archipelago as his stress reliever.
The rules of the game are the same as those in the original Adventure Island, with the main new feature being the addition of an inventory system. Before the player begins a stage, he can choose which of Higgins' animal friends to bring (if he has rescued any), as well as whether or not he should bring one of the stone hammers he has accumulated. Because of this, the player can no longer upgrade to shooting fireballs when he picks a second hammer. Instead, it gets added as a reserved hammer to the player's inventory.
The checkpoint system has been eliminated and if the player dies in the middle of a stage, he must restart from the very beginning. However, the stages are significantly shorter than in the previous game. Each island has about 10 stages, but transition between stages happens at random, so it is impossible to visit all stages in one walkthrough.
When the player strikes a place where a hidden egg is located, it will play a different noise that will serve as an indicator of its location. There are now underwater stages, as well as vertical-scrolling stages. When the player completes a stage riding a skateboard, he does not get to take it to the next stage like he could in the previous game, but gets a 2000 point bonus instead. Between stages there is a bonus screen where the player can choose one of spinning eggs to get a 50-2000 point bonus or an extra life. The player can now backtrack during a stage as well, but only up to a certain point.
Bosses are now a little bit more diverse. The boss of each island awaits the player on a specific stage at the beginning. However, if the player is defeated while fighting a boss, the boss will move to another area, forcing the player not only to clear his current stage, but also another one in order to fight the boss.
There are four types of dinosaur friends that Higgins can ride. These animal friends are summoned when the player collects a playing card suit hidden inside an egg. The blue camptosaurus (heart card) attacks with his tail; the red camptosaurus (spade) can breathe fire; the pteranodon (clover) can fly over obstacles and drop stones; and the elasmosaurus (diamond) is the only dinosaur that can survive in underwater stages (the others will be lost when used underwater) and can help Higgins swim faster.
I make a single run of the game without showing all stages. The level design is repetitive across the entire game, so I didn't miss much. -

Me too. I could never get past the Octopus, although it was due more to that wretched ice floor than anything else. (Seriously, the Blue Dino makes the ice levels SO much easier because it's immune to the sliding on the ice. Why couldn't we just stay ON the dino for the boss?)

I don't get how Shigeru Miyamoto said they wanted a dinosaur like Yoshi in the original Super Mario Bros., but the technology just wasn't there and waited for the SNES. Not only did Mario Is Missing on the NES have Luigi riding Yoshi (i.e. a third party stepped in to get it done despite the game being garbage), but THIS game is full of "Yoshis", so Hudson pulled it off too.
Things Miyamoto say are never straight forward. I have noticed every time he says things, he never speaks his complete thoughts. Also, whatever he may say is not reflective of everyone in the company. The programmers they had at the time were simply not technically advanced to grasp a rideable animal with the technology THEY had. The NES was an excuse to hide the fact the engine they were using wouldn't allow it.

@@KetwunsGamingPad Also, take into account that the first Super Mario Bros. was made in 1984/85. The NES was still fairly new and unexplored. Meanwhile, Adventure Island II was programmed in 1990/91. Seven years later. At that point, Super Mario World and the SNES were already a thing.

Same, I had never heard of this game and I bought one of those 600 games in one console things you plug in the TV and my 9 year old became obsessed with his game lol he makes me fight the monsters and so far I have beat the whole game twice in the last month! Needless to say I fell behind on my chores cuz I would play hours with him😂
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm just purely curious. What is your favorite island in this game? Mine has to be Desert Island. Features 2 unique Desert levels, has a very easy boss and is overall less tedious than Island 2 and just fun to play. Least favorite would be Ice Island, ridiculously hard for being the 4th world in the game with an even more annoying shithead of a boss.
That's a tough question! I'd probably say Desert Island as well and I agree that 4th world is pretty difficult. Although, Cloud Island is interesting too, but very difficult on certain levels.
@@vukanbozovic6105 Yeah, Cloud Island is pretty fun too. Volcano Island as well. Ice Island is just unfair. It's harder than Cloud Island in my opinion.

They never explained why the last boss was inside a dinosaur's stomach. Or why you were fighting insects inside the stomach. Oh well, _Joe & Mac_ did the same thing.
1 year later I didn't know either but from what I learned in the manual it says that a witch doctor has kidnapped Tina and you have to save her. Where is the witch doctor? No idea. The insects and bosses are enchanted that is why they are giant compare to the rest. However what the hell is the first boss I have no idea.
@@endefisto123 If I remember right, it's said that these enlarged insects which are bosses were followers of the Witch Doctor from Adventure Island 1.

There are some ways you can glitch it and clip through and not take damage. Hard to do but not impossible. Especially on the water levels.

@@dbodooley I have beaten it as well without cheating, but again it is like super mario bros where you can go through the pirana plants and not get hit. The hit detection on some enemies is smaller than their actual well form. Like they have a pixel or 2 inside the art that if you touch you get hit but as long as you are a pixel away you don't get hit even if you are inside their module. In the water levels for example the black things that are like stars have 1 pixel hit ratio and when hudson is on the water dino the hit rate within that is well in the part where he sits on the water dino so that is why your head can go through those stars completely and the 2 boxes just don't connect and it does not register as a hit.

The strange thing is--those jumping fish, heavily used on water/mountain levels in Adventure Island 1--only appear in one level in Adventure Island 2--in Dinosaur Island.

Just get an NES emulator download it and get a joystick for a pc and play it on pc if you can't find it. However I am sure you can find it in some stores that sells older stuff.

Adventure Island 2, Little Nemo, Zelda 1, Mega Man 3, Maniac Mansion and Panic Restaurant were my obssesions back in the day, i was so lucky to have lived in the 80s and 90s and experienced that era.
BTW, pro tip: in the early islands whenever you end a stage just save all your items, so they stack them, you will need all for the last island, and of course the Hudson Bee so you can keep them if you have a game over.

I was 7 years old when played this and I'm 38 years old now .
I think Someone who has played this game is a adult because a kid 6-7 year old has to play this game for days to get to the finish of this game.
I finished this game myself, but in 2 days after days of played , At the time we were played there was no memory card to save the games so we just could stop the game and start the game again with the start button .I remember stopped the game at night and continued the game the next day until I could finish this game .
I remember that it took more than 3 hours on average to get to the last island.

I used to love this game growing up. I came up with my own name for the dinosaurs (can't remember what I called it), and one day at school we had to give a short presentation on our dream pet and when it was my turn I said the name I came up with and all my classmates and teacher looked so confused😂
