Union Pacific's Santa Barbara Subdivision is one of the most unique railroad lines in the world. The line is built on bluffs on the very edge of the pacific ocean, and passes thru hundreds of miles of untouched coastline.
The subdivision is 175 miles long and is part of the historic "Coastline" railroad, built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1901 to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles directly. The area highlighted in this video was the last section completed. Today, the railroad is primarily used by Amtrak, operating Surfliner service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo and the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Seattle. The only remaining freight is one Union Pacific local train, the Guadalupe, which operates on the line 4 days a week.
