the turn you played thopter foundry you could have just cast Life to get 4 1/1s and attacked for 5 vs his 3 blockers since he was at 2 life right?

Match 3 game 1, you can Lotus Petal out the Thoughtsieze and still Library next turn, I thought? Anyway, kinda reminiscent of the Thopter/Depths deck back in the day - two fairly orthogonal combos that somehow work in the same deck.
You cannot. 8 cards. Down to 6 if you don’t play a land. Up to 7. Play library and down to 6. So even if you miss your land drop t1 you can’t library.
@@rv907 why would you not play Library turn 1? It replaces itself. Start with 8 cards, play Library = 7, activate Library = 8, play Petal + Thoughtsieze = 6, next turn draw = 7, activate Library = 8. It's exactly what you want with a Library hand, extra card draw offset by acceleration and interactivity.

It would be incredibly fun to see the Urza, Planeswalker dream. I've been playing Magic since days when the coolest thing to do was crash MODO with three Oblivion Rings. But I've never seen meld actually happen.

@@SymmetricalDocking It's happened to me twice. I lost once and won once. It's honestly not that strong, which feels weird to say given how powerful his abilities are, but there's a reason LSV never even thinks about trying it.
You shouldn't automatically scoop. Because people never actually get to play with Urza, they don't seem to have a great idea of how to use him once they've got him. Both times he came into play the player misused him pretty badly.
3-0 and lose the event seems to be the #1 staple of this channel nowadays ^_^; but at least it's super fun to watch all of your games lol

This was a sweet deck. I wasnt sure how it would play out given that you drafted basically 3 different decks together. This is a deck i feel confident i would have built poorly and 0-3'd. Glad you tried out the thopter/sword combo.

1:45 Retrofitter has to be the card that LSV and I have the single largest difference in evaluation on in history. LSV willing to 2nd pick it and for me it might be a 23rd playable and I think it's incorrect to actually be in 90% of decks that play it. It's kind of crazy to me that I've watched LSV play the card a ton and he thinks it was good in those games while I only remember it being good in his games maybe twice and I think basically any mana sink would have been good in those spots. Will be interesting to see if I think the card was good in this deck or not.
1:01:00 Exactly how I see Retrofitter 99% of the time. In opening hand with ability to cast turn 3 Urza and at no point is it correct to cast the card and die with it in your hand.
1:05:00 Oh! Maybe it'll do something. a 1/1 still feels weak to me compared to a ton of other things you can do with 3 mana on turn 1 but, this at least has some potential. If it's not good enough here then....
1:06:00 choosing not to kill the fitter with artifact removal kind of shows evaluation of strength. Here I do actually think it's close and fitter might have been better than crypt to destroy depending on rest of cards in hand.
1:07:30 Ok, this isn't fitter being strong this is opponent making multiple big mistakes. Ultimately retrofitter in that game was 4 mana for a 4/4 flash that ate a creature over 3 turns. Top, spellseeker, Malcolm, and Grislebrand were the cards that were going to win that game. This is what I mean, opening hand with a Crypt and it ended up just being a surprise 4/4 and chose not to activate it for a turn.
Final verdict: my opinion remains the same. I think retrofitter is too slow and is barely playable and Thopter Foundry combo is actually great in decks with Academy, Tinker, Urza, or Cradle. The entire difference is the amount of mana it takes to generate creatures between them. Foundry just takes WAY more mana to do things than the combo does, takes more turns to generate lethal with an academy or cradle or urza, and doesn't gain life to negate any outs opponent might have.
IMHO I think you want to take the Thopter pieces around pick 5-6 and I wouldn't take Retrofitter until at least pick 10 and I wouldn't be happy about it. I just have never seen the card win a game except in situations where virtually any mana sink would win and I think it's basically the worst mana sink option.
not saying I completely disagree with you, I used to think it was way overrated, but I've seen LSV do nuts things with it plus either cradle or academy (sometimes both!) in other videos. I think the strength of it with urza's saga and urza is meaningful too. I don't think it's a 2nd pick card, but do think it is better than I once thought.
also, mana crypt is *power*, so the opponent killing it over retrofitter (and that maybe even being the wrong choice!) isn't exactly a knock against retrofitter.

@@jrjamesson He literally stated his concern on that turn. Foresight is the word you're looking for. I didn't know of that threat until he mentioned it, but once he did, the correct play becomes obvious. "Do nothing and hope for the best" vs "try to stop the threat" isn't a difficult matrix to figure out.
For the CZcams thumbnails, I recommend non-Mox cards (unless you get like 3). Moxen are powerful obviously, but they're not interesting or attention-grabbing.
