    Is the speed in relationship to the particular motor or a setting that it is on? Meaning that it is adjustable if you know what to do?

    • @thesergeant3524
      @thesergeant3524  Před 8 lety

      +Lorien Newbury The short answer: Yes it's adjustable via the pulley on the motor
      The Long Answer:
      There are two motor speeds for clutch motors, either 1725 RPM or 3450 RPM. That is the speed of the motor shaft and it is fixed. What's adjustable on these machines is your pulley ratio. Think about it like the gears on a bike. When you are pedaling and the chain is on the smallest gear up front when you pedal really fast you will go slow. When you put the chain on the 'big ring' up front and you pedal really fast you will go really fast. The inverse is true for the rear gear on a bike (Smaller rear gear=faster, larger=slower). The sewing machine is the same way except the "gear on the back" (the machine's handwheel/pulley) is a fixed size so you can only adjust the gear (pulley) on the motor, which is like the front gears on a bike. The larger the pulley on the motor the faster the machine will go, the smaller the pulley the slower. This applies to top speed only though. You also need to understand that torque comes into play here. A larger pulley will require more torque to get started whereas a smaller one requires less. What this translates to is that some machines with a really small pulley will just take off on you when you want to start slow. The larger the motor pulley the more linear the speed control is when starting slow -- at least in my experience.
      If you want a truly adjustable motor you need to get with a DC Servo Motor that has adjustable speed control

    Where do you find these to purchase? Or perhaps a similar end result chainstitch in a more modern machine?

    • @david78212
      @david78212 Před 6 lety

      b1lf chainstitch is pretty much gone. Some older machine do it but it is a great assembly stitch. Some touch and sew have the option to do it. But most machines nowadays are just quilters.

    Hi there,
    I'm interested in buying a black Singer 99W, a key hole button hole machine. I want to use it for jeans making.
    Also an antique black Singer 5 threads industrial coverlock machine for inner seam closing for jeans will be welcome. Could be also Merrow or other black antique machine.
    Could you provide something like this.thanks beforehand

      +Razvan T Sorry, I don't sell machines. I'm just a hobbyist that restores and uses them. From time to time I'll sell a machine if I'm not using it as much as expect or I've upgraded but that doesn't happen all that often. Goodluck in your search!

    Hi! Where did you learn all about sewing machines? I need to download your knowledge to my brain.

    • @thesergeant3524
      @thesergeant3524  Před 4 lety

      LOL. Self taught but I've read through a lot of old adjustment manuals and taken A LOT of machines apart. After awhile I just developed a greater understanding of how the machines work in general and feel comfortable enough to work on any machine. Find a vintage machine and start messing with the adjustments is the best way to get started. :)

    (0:11) - *_"...capable of sewing up to four thousand stitches per inch, which is crazy fast..."_*
    *_WHAT ?_*
    *Stitches per inch* is nothing to do with speed.
    In fact, 4,000 stitches per inch seems pretty impossible to me.
    Even high end printers can usually manage only 1200 dots per inch, but *STITCHES ?*
    *_Man! You crazee_*

    But isn't chain stitch bad? If you lose one stitch the whole thing will unravel.

    • @david78212
      @david78212 Před 7 lety

      Super Wig Maker The chain stitch is good for just that. It's great for trying out construction for size. BUT if you look at most of you shorts/pants, a lot are made with chain stitch. Most of Levis top stitch is all chain stitch. before the lock stitch machine, that's all there was... It's tougher than you think it is, it's also easier to fix if the thread does get snagged.

    • @avalonskiesjacketartist5947
      @avalonskiesjacketartist5947 Před 6 lety

      You can't loose one stitch, because it's one continuous thread (yarn) without a bobbin. You need to tie the end off when your done stitching so it doesn't unravel.

    • @JasmineMaars
      @JasmineMaars Před 5 lety

      Most people use the term "chainstitch", to describe the single-needle chainstitch. The single needle chainstitch is used for temporary sewing mostly because as you said, it's not strong. The type of stitches his machine forms is the multi-thread chain stitch. It's very strong and used a lot in the garment industry.

  • @Bodragon
    @Bodragon Před 4 lety +1

    (0:07) - That is a lock-stitch machine.
    Chain-stitch uses only a single thread, hence it is "chained".
    Just because the lower thread is not wholly contained underneath the flat bed plate, on its own little bobbin, does not make it a chain-stitch machine.
    No.
    Definitely a lock-stitch machine, that one.

    • @thesergeant3524
      @thesergeant3524  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the comment! There are a lot of different stitch types so it can get a little confusing. This machine is a "double chain stitch" machine. There are two threads like a lockstitch machine but the stitch construction is different. The 147-81 manual describes it as a "one needle and one looper two -thread chain stitch ". This is also what's referred to as a "401 stitch type". These stitch types benefit from great seam stability and greater seam elasticity due to the thread reserves from the bottom chainstitch. I can't post a photo showing details in a comment but if you google you should be able to get a little more info.

    1200 stitches/ inch? I think you meant 1200 stitches/ minute!!!!
