Secret Medical Testing on People & the Government Knew?! The Tuskegee Experiment

  • Hi friends, happy Thursday!
    In 1972, an article went viral before the internet existed. The headline read: “Syphilis Victims in U.S. Study Went Untreated for 40 Years.” This bombshell report exposed the Tuskegee Experiment for what it was: a crime against humanity. Today, Bailey tells the story of the study’s 400 participants and the monsters who lied and took advantage of them even though a cure to their illness was readily available.
    I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.

    This still happens today. In med school in most states, students are taught that black people's liver reacts differently and they have a higher tolerance, leading to more black people deaths in medicine. The US government needs to be held accountable as with the Nuremberg trials for the German Nazis (American Nazis were never held accountable). The idea of America is great, but we have a long way to go and a lot of work. I hope with more of this coming out people will realize how much more work needs to be put in.

    Hey y’all, had to comment on this before I even watched:
    My dad was born in this very hospital. During these experiments. The weekend he was born, his mother (a very pregnant black woman) drove all around Montgomery Alabama in active labor and was turned away by every hospital and clinic. The colored hospital, she was told, was in Tuskegee. So off she drove and the same time she arrived, a hurricane came with her.
    So that weekend Tuskegee faced floods and torrential rain. They told my grandparents to take my dad home while they focused on repairs, and it wasn’t until decades later did we learn what he was spared from. Every time I see the rain I think of how it saved my dad and in turn, my entire lineage.
    A lot of people like to say the harms of slavery, institutional racism, and segregation were years ago. But no, my boomer dad is still walking around wearing socks at the grocery store and talking to scores of people who have no idea the mortal danger my dad was in just for being born black. And that’s just one instance. There are many harms in life that disproportionately affect some more than others.

      @@hillarybaker2349 oh no i was making a joke about how “boomer” and innocent my dad seems, not knowing how the deep dark stains of segregation so closely threatened his life. I hear all the time “the harms of slavery were forever ago” no my dad is still here. My dad is walking around, and doesnt have to look like an “angry black man” or a “ghetto person” to have suffered from segregation.
      Its a completely different argument and might be too deep for a youtube comment section lol (I apologize) but there is a belief out there that if you look white dress white talk white, you’re “safe”.

I’ve never really trusted the medical industry bc they’ve been not so kind to my parents and some Family members in the past (we are Hispanic and apparently speaking broken English is a crime and not worth being helped) I have been translating for my mother since the age of 5 and still do (I’ve deep research in their medical primary provider, office staff, and their spoken language bc even though we call the insurance for a translator, they don’t always show up due to miscommunication or over booking in their part). They have excellent medical insurance that covers almost everything so it always boggles my mind why some providers make it so difficult for others to get the proper treatments

    As a public health professional, I learned about this case in college. It really should be more public so more folks know about the racism in healthcare. The Tuskegee Syphillis Experiment till this day remains in public health history as one of the first systematic AND deliberate acts of racism. Bailey, if you think this is ridiculous you should look into Henrietta Lacks’ HeLa cells. It’s equally infuriating!!

    • @GoodnightJLH
      @GoodnightJLH Před 2 lety +15

      Honestly, I think the Tuskegee Experiment was WAY more sociopathic than the Henrietta Lacks incident. Ms. Lacks received diagnosis and treatment for her disease. It’s just that the lab used her cells for experiments after performing her biopsy. The lab provided those cells free to all researchers at that time. It was later on that commercial entities got the free cells then established their own cell lines that they sold for profit. Ms. Lacks was deceased by the time anyone profited from her cells.
      The gentlemen in the Tuskegee experiment were not told their diagnosis and not treated. Many of them died of the disease. Many had permanent disability if they survived. They passed the disease on to wives and children and many of them died or were disabled for life. This is in contrast to Ms Lacks who got the best care available at the time. In her case, the ethical dilemma is whether her surviving family is entitled to proceeds from sales of the cell line derived from her original cancer. These days, there are consent forms and when we agree that our tissue may be used in research, we sign off ownership of that tissue to the researchers.

    This reminds me a lot of Henrietta Lacks. Bailey you should totally look into her case and how she’s the reason we have HeLa cells. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” is such an interesting book, definitely worth the read. There’s some problems with the author of it but it gives great insight on Henrietta and what she contributed to science without her consent.

    I learned of this awful "experiment" when I was in medical assistant school. I really hoped it wasn't true, but sadly it is. There was one guy who actually had syphilis, everyone knew him in the area I honestly goget his name but he was ALWAYS dancing. Wherever this guy went he was dancing. Well his syphilis had advanced so much that it actually ate away his brain and he acted like he had alzhiemer's cause he no longer had his fully functioning brain. It was extremely sad to see AMYONE treated this way. And they really knew what was wrong with these people... AND STILL DID NOTHING to help cure them.
