- State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Tuesday lost his cool after a reporter accused him of smirking while talking about the human tragedy of Gaza. This was after a reporter drew Miller’s attention a reporter by the science journal Lancet, which feared that the death toll in Gaza could stand at 186,000.
This isn't even new. He's been smirking at this genocide for months.

To have a position such as his, I think deceit and manipulation are among the desirable traits.
And even then, he’s the least awful of the State Department spokespeople, insofar as he appears slightly less gleeful than his colleagues when lying for a murderous, rogue foreign government.
Perhaps because, when he’s not, Miller manages to seem almost like a decent human being (though this veneer is increasingly diminished with every demonstrably absurd lie he disseminates from the podium with ease).
Unavoidable fact is that you have to tap into a special brand of shamelessness that doesn’t necessarily come as a standard bonus offer with all despicable bureaucratic bullshitters.
The job of denying the undeniable and obscuring the self-evident requires someone with Miller’s particular talent for narrative spin and creative reframing, but packaged up with a veneer of respectability and personable , you’d be forgiven if you mistook him for a personable an honest broker.

A press conference is a place to manipulate individual reporters. A laugh gives him a fulcrum point.
There’s no reason to lighten the mood though. These briefings should be somber. They should be nothing but somber and seeking answers. No smirking allowed, period.

Let's not pretend that Israel is unique, or that the US is somehow acting out of character. That's as bad as Iraeli genocide denial, really.
