this means hinge cup diameter is independent of the thickness of the material? can 35mm hinges be used on 15- 12mm thick panels and doors?

      Dear thebrokenbone,
      thank you for your question.
The thickness and also the kind of material are only some factors influencing the choice of the hinge. You might have to regard the door size and weight, special construction details or look for features of the hinge itself (quick assembly, soft closing,...) .
Imagine working with a wood framed door with thin inlay that doesn't offer the space for fixing a 35mm cup: This might be one good reason for 26mm hinge cups. Usually, these kind of doors are rather small and lightweight, which supports choosing the smaller hinges. As these kind of doors are not that common, the 26mm cup hinges are more or less a solution available for tricky and special applications.
This leads us to the 35mm cup hinges: These are by far the standard and available in many different versions. Most require a drilling depth of little under 13mm, some do with less than 12mm. If you like to mount them on doors that are thinner than the required drilling depth, then you can work with spacers to decrease the drilling depth. (See here: www.hettich.com/blaetterkataloge/TA_2013/en_DE/blaetterkatalog/index.html?startpage=52) This way, even mounting on 12mm thin doors is possible these days.
Please be aware that the screws fixing the hinges to the door must carry the weight...
