The Way It Goes
I got the windows open, I’m letting the cars pass by
Everybody’s going somewhere, leaving something behind
I’m driving down to the coast, stare out at the sea
And think about what could of been but will never be
I listen with one ear open and watch with one eye closed
I only get half the story, that’s the way it goes
They told him up was down and red was blue
And he heard it so many times he thought it was true
Now he’s fighting anybody who isn’t just like him
Stuck in the mud, it’s a battle he can never win
He’s rolling with the punches, taking the highs and lows
Late at night it don’t feel right, that’s the way it goes
There’s a broken record playing in my head
What I didn’t do, what I could have, should have said
Sometimes it’s soft and low, could hear a pin drop
Sometimes it gets so loud and it just won’t stop
I don’t want to wake nobody, I’m walking on my tiptoes
Let them hear what they want to, that’s the way it goes
