Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh) Scouting Report | NFL Draft 2022

  • When you think about Kenny Pickett, the first thing that comes to mind is his breakout season. Before the year started, Pickett wasn’t even on most scouts’ radars. He was seen as your average ACC quarterback and I doubt many had him that high on their boards. He finished both 2019 and 2020 throwing for 13 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Well in 2021 things changed drastically... Pickett threw for over 4,300 yards, and he also converted 42 touchdowns while only throwing 7 interceptions. This breakout performance was one of the best we’ve seen in some time. The level of improvement that Pickett showed makes him an intriguing prospect in this year’s draft.
    In this video, I discussed Pickett's strengths and weaknesses. I also discussed why I would not draft him in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.

    Kenny Pickett has a lot of positives: accuracy, ability to extend plays, quick progressions and can find his check downs... However, how he deals with pressure (and not his hand size) really concerns me. Let me know what you guys think!

      As you noted, I don't like "first look isn't good, better get out of the pocket" thinking. A lot of college QBs do it, because they can get away with it. While he's good at extending the play, he's not as quick as Mahomes or Jackson and can't run for 20 yards down field, particularly in the NFL.
      Seeing "a lot of upside, but a project" being a recurring theme with QBs this year.

    • @brother-In-Christ404

      So you have him graded as outside of the first round, but he's definitely gonna be picked there. How do you think you're grading process is different than that of NFL scouts?

    • @rook1196
      @rook1196 Před 2 lety +1

      His OL in his SR year was average, and that was by far the best OL he's played with. Not to mention that his So-Jr years the running game wasn't just bad, it was historically bad. Sure he loves running right instead of stepping up but he's generally good and has tons of exp playing under pressure and is comfortable improvising when things break down.
      Often think that QBs that get better with experience in college usually follow the same path in the NFL. The game will slow down for him, its just will a team have the patience to wait.

    For me personally accuracy, anticipation, and pocket presence are all non-negotiable when it comes to QBs. Whether they can move or extend plays is gravy. Kenny's lack of pocket presence is concerning like you said, but my question is can that be coached into him or is it just a feel thing?

    • @SamuelGoldNFL

      Great question - I can't really think of a case where a QB was skittish in college and he fixed that in the NFL.

    Amazing man. Love this breakdown. Hope you do more. My seahawks will finally pick high or mid first round this season. I'm honestly hoping for a trade down and add a couple blue chip pieces on the o and d line. Schneider busts this draft, he's done in Seattle.

      Heyyyy wassup fellow Hawks fan! Personally I really like the potential combined with amazing character of Malik Willis, even if the QBs of next year are better, so i wouldn't be too sad if they stayed at 9 and somehow got him. Don't see them trading up for him for sure, but if he's there, i think it'd be cool to get him. If he's not, then yeah, trade down for sure.

      @@brother-In-Christ404 Malik Willis both excites and terrifies me. He's such a raw prospect. I think Ridder is the better fit for the Hawks right now but I'd be disappointed if they take him at nine with a blue chip DE, OT, or CB on the board. I have a feeling they will trade back with New Orleans or San Diego. If they could get Willis or Ridder in the back half of the first round I would be stoked.

    I’ll go on record and say that Kenny Pickett is going to be the best QB in this class. He’s great in the intermediate routes, has moxie, he throws well on the run, and he’s trending in the right direction. Late bloomer and I think he’ll continue to bloom into a good pro quarterback.

    • @34Deangelo
      @34Deangelo Před 2 lety +1

      Indeed, Tyree. Look at Cam Newton. Cam's been in the league since 2011 and to this minute has some of the worst QB mechanics EVER. And yet, got the Panthers to 3 back-to-back playoff births, a Super Bowl, and a league MVP award. And regarding Kenny - the dude has shown tremendous coachability with marvelous, undeniable improvement. I sure hope Scott Fitterer pulls the trigger on K.P. @ draft #6 🙂

      @@34Deangelo Great point. I think the Panthers take him at 6. Coach Rhule recruited him when he was at Temple and David Tepper is a Pitt alum. I also think he fits in well with the Panthers personnel and Ben McAdoo’s west coast offensive scheme. He played in a similar scheme under Mark Whipple.

    The big thing for me is Pickett did extend plays at times at a high level and when he did he made good plays and reads. I think some f his errors are more so stepping up in the pocket too late and bailing too soon sometimes from clean pockets. He is not oblivious to pressure I actually think he sense pressure fairly well. Both the things i mentioned feel coachable and like it would not take long for a QB coach to correct.

    To me, he’s the only quarterback I’d be okay with starting day 1. That doesn’t mean he’s QB1 though. He’s got the highest floor, but also the lowest ceiling. In a QB class full of high ceiling/low floor guys, Pickett’s an interesting eval.

    • @kenfresno2125
      @kenfresno2125 Před 2 lety

      The fact that almost all of the "high ceiling" QBs ever drafted were total failures works in his favor. If you haven't learned how to play QB before getting to the NFL, there's almost no chance you're going to learn in the NFL. Willis, for example, will never start for an NFL team and will be out of the league after his rookie contract.

  • @AB-im4rx
    @AB-im4rx Před 2 lety +5

    Totally agree about his inability to be comfortable in the pocket, however I’d disagree about his hand size not being a concern. Aren’t NCAA footballs noticeably smaller than NFL balls? I’ve felt both of them before unless something has changed and it’s way easier to have a tight hand grip on a NCAA ball. He’ll have to adapt and I won’t be surprised if he successfully does but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t. Personally I would grade him as a round 3 pick

    • @kingmatty
      @kingmatty Před 2 lety

      He's more of a 2nd, hand size is not an accurate measurement, look at Burrow he's got small hands n is a top 10 QB. It depends on the talent, Pickett is a low floor high ceiling player, only problem is he'll be 24 at the beginning of the season

    A qb that isn’t comfortable in the pocket trusting his flashes while still looking down the field through their progressions has no chance at the nfl level. This is not easy to do and thus why few qbs are successful in the nfl as a pro. Of course he could always improve on this, like anything else from prospect to pro. But harder to gamble on this specific issue over others getting better.

    Arm strength is the most overrated attribute in NFL history. All you have to do is look at the results put up by the guys with the biggest arms in NFL history. Other than Rodgers, has any of them ever won anything? No, huh? And Rodgers only won once. I don't think you'll find anyone on earth who said Ben had great arm strength, yet (until the last 2 years) Ben was consistently near the top of the league on deep balls. Playing QB is all about footwork and timing, and Kenny has one of those down perfectly. You clean up his footwork (as you said in the video) and he's already one of the top 15 QBs in the league in the things that actually matter and actually contribute to winning. Being ultra-athletic doesn't win titles. Having a cannon doesn't win titles. Being consistent and having great timing does. Peyton Manning won a Super Bowl when he couldn't throw the ball 15 yards.
