FRANCESCA DA RIMINI, Op. 32
State Symphony Orchestra of the Russian Federation
EVGENY SVETLANOV, cond.
Recording: Large Hall, Moscow Radio, 17 July 1993
One of my favorite recordings of this frenetic masterwork.
Svetlanov is the only conductor who really brings out the hysteria this music has. In other words the best "Francesca" ever on record!
I agree though the Gergiev/LPO recording is also excellent. I was listening to Bernstein/NYPO but it's way too slow in parts.
I agree with you! Even Mravinsky concedes to him.
You need to hear Markevitch, but not with the Philharmonia....the DGG recording with the Lamoureux Orchestra. Totally insane.
The more I listen to this work the more I'm convinced it's possibly P.I. Tchaikovsky's finest composition after the 6th symphony. I also agree that this recording is, at least from others I've heard, the finest on record.
the other finest work is the Manfred-symphony, (and maybe his absolute finest) but only when conducted by Svetlanov (his studio-recording from 1967).
Paul Lewis, don't you like Mravinsky's?
I'd put it well in front of the Pathetique, to be honest. As I would Manfred.
i was going to suggest, have you heard Manfred too..
awesome..
i rather like the voyevoda overture from the period of the sixth symphony
this is still comparatively early in his composing i think?
@@davidevans3227Sure. But Manfred and Francesca are also the (only?) works Tchaikovsky was consistently proud of.
I think this is by far the best interpretation and performance of the piece by any conductor and orchestra. The piece needs hysteria, especially at the end, and he achieves this with the break-neck speed and the omission of the nasty sudden tempo change that most conductors add in for the chord stabs in the final bars. Truly magical.
What a thrilling account of what is perhaps Tchaikovsky's finest piece of programme music. Some of this music was used in the Hitchcock picture "Torn Curtain" with chilling effect especially at the point in the music 20.20 where the lovers are discovered, that passage can make your blood run cold.
Bravo bravo bravo genial grandiose music
WOW! Bravo....

Very good, and beautifully recorded but I find Mravinsky (1972 and 1973) has a bit more intensity.
Sorry, I meant 1983.
The best
That Thaykovsky 's a SPECIAL PIECE.... not Romeo& Julia"... much more difficult for rendition
you might say so-----is any team the best of all time? the best angelic background---13 : 35
