Here's my video essay on why I think Better Call Saul is the perfect prequel. I have more essays for the show on the way, but let me know down below what content you wold like to see on it over the next couple of weeks.

Breaking Bad was absolutely amazing, but Better Call Saul resonated with me on a personal level, and thats what brings it to the top for me.

That part where Marie said "it's purpling time" and then pulled out a rock and threw it at Saul's face while all the lawyers including Bill clapped was so emotional. Truly the moment Saul became Jimmy.

When I was younger I loved breaking bad, but I hated BCS. It wasn't what I was expecting at all, and quite frankly it bored me. I watched a few episodes, and put it down. After a few years passed, and BCS was nearing S5, I wanted to show my gf breaking bad, because she'd never seen it before, and after we finished it, she really wanted to watch BCS. I told her it was a waste of time, but she insisted we give it a chance because she really liked BB. Im so happy I listened to her, because I instantly saw why it was different, and how making BCS its own thing was a great decision. I was on board from that moment on, and I absolutely loved this show. Possibly even more than BB. I say to anyone going into this show, give it a real chance. It's worth it. And while the question of which show is better will always be subjective to who you ask, in my opinion as someone who started out disliking the show, but loving BB, I would say its my personal favorite.

I realize BCS is serving BB as foundation, prequel elements but not limited to just prequel, served as spin-off and a bit of sequel.
BCS is slow pacing because of details to unfold the events of BCS itself and BB.
I remember that BCS season 3 is one of slowest pacing, but one of the most detailed for story progression. It is important season.
BCS as a whole is something though.
      Masterpiece, just like BB.

Another prequel that pulls it off very successfully is the Red Dead Redemption 2 game from Rockstar. And it does it in a way that reminds me of BCS somehow.

    • @ItsReallyJCole
      @ItsReallyJCole Před 2 lety +13

I thought the same thing! What they did with John marston felt similar to jimmy McGill. Red dead redemption is a far deeper, less focused prequel that adds subtext to little details making them hold greater weight in the original story.

I love rdr2’s open world but rockstar definitely did NOT pull off the story for that prequel. There were actually continuity errors in the story and map as well. I love that game but the story don’t come close to bcs cause there was not one error in that series. A minor example is in rdr1 when Bonnie shows you around the ranch in the beginning she tells John that her barn was build when she was a child but go to rdr2 it’s not even there, another error is Dutch’s gang actually stood for “rob the rich give to the poor” John says it to every character that he comes across in rdr1 but then in rdr2 they’re taking from the poor and the rich, but hey other than the errors it’s probably the best open world game to this day in my opinion just like how bcs is the best prequel to ever exist.

True and genuine story telling, imagine knowing the fate of Mike and Gus, only to be educated further and even to be a bit surprised as to their destiny in a prequel...an amazing literary accomplishment done on the small screen. Jimmy/Saul/Gene's characterization is truth to the core of how a con man with a heart will eventually con himself ending up with nothing!

I fear there will never be anything greater, but take great comfort in knowing that all of my re-binges of both series will forever satisfy! Along with these two series, I've got "The Office" for comedic excellence. With just these three shows, I could really cancel everything else. Can't improve on perfection. The only show I can name that I think is as good as these was the miniseries BBC adaptation of and then there were none. Would recommend it to you.
What was your favourite episode of better call saul and breaking bad? Mine would either be a season 6 episode (just not episode 5 or 6, episode 6 was better but still not brilliant, or an episode 4 or 5 episode from the latter halves of those seasons.

Set in the 60s, we see how the cartel moves into ABQ and feuds with indigenous criminals and a compelling lawman , Eladios dad is don in Mexico which explains why Eladios such a lighthearted don, hes a young Prince with not much respect who doesn't seem to get his hands dirty. Gus Chile story is explained and Eladios knowledge of his backround. Hector and his brothers (lalos dad played by tony Dalton of course) in their 20s/30s. We see. How Hector ended up with all these fatherless nephews.
I'd call it Salamanca Blood, Salamanca Money
It's the only way to expand the universe and we need Lalo Snr played by TD

Top 10 all-time favorites for me, even if it's a "better" show than some of my other top 10's, i didn't enjoy it as much as many other shows. Peaky Blinders, Mad Men, Dexter, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Oz, Deadwood, The Shield, The Killing, The Haunting of Hill House, Succession, Ozark, Taboo, Black Sails, off the top of my head, i probably preferred to BCS despite the quality of the shows maybe not being as high up in some ways... But Still, BrBa best show ever, BCS, best prequel ever is a great accomplishment.

agreed, surprised there's even debate about it, as good as BCS was, BrBa was so much more intriguing and emotionally challenging. BCS's direction, acting, etc is fantastic, but I honestly think the last 10-15 years has changed and people (ie viewers) are emotionally regressing, not the whole world, but the majority of those into pop culture... So perhaps the audience was just easier to get emotionally involved, or affected. But it shouldn't be compared and could still be talked about for years to come.

@@elikerr785 breaking bad first seasons and entire run has FX sons of anarchy type casting and production values. its final season and tension release was singular and awesome but better call Saul didn't need any of the absurdities of BB to deliver character studies that were in my opinion FAR deeper than anything Breaking Bad attempted. Different strokes for different folks but if you want subversive and an exaggerated dramatic thriller, BB, if you want a seamlessly delivered epic crime drama with perfect casting and brilliantly layered/written characters, BcS.
