- We are moving from Apple Dorm, Sham Shui Po to a flat just down the road. Check out this comparison of 2 cheap places to live in Hong Kong. We are very happy with our new flat, though it may look tiny to you, it is about 4 times the size of what we are used to.

i dont know how hong kong gets away with those tiny rooms. housing in london is extremely difficult to find so landlords have started dividing rooms and subletting them but they always get shut down by the council
Tell me about it. I am currently studying and can’t afford much outside student accommodation. Anything affordable is mostly run down.
1200 square feet is a very small house in America
@Penny Pillow
Should build housing up like those in Singapore.
Totalitarianism that's how, the head of department of finance of the HK gov owns plenty of those divided flats himself.
Happens everywhere. Sydney the same. Landlords dividing rooms to fit in as many as possible.
This is beyond imagination and eye opener. Never realise the living accommodation is so scarce. The whole area is smaller than my kitchen area. Thanks so much for sharing.🤩
I love the cat in the end giving both fingers! "Go Away" 😂😂😂😂😂
Celebrating with tacos!!! great!, Saludos from Mexico
Congrats on your new place even after two years. Never skip leg day at this place. I'll try going up to ninth for next two weeks.
Wow what a difference for a few extra £’s you get a proper self contained flat, and a gym (stairs) all in one.
Bruh! You two have got got a lot of patience, at first I thought "🤔hmm, the old place ain't bad". But then u mentioned having to share the bathroom with 22 other people. That's crazy, she can touch opposite sides of the bedroom wall at the same time🤣. New place looks like a huge upgrade, well done. Soooooo new video next week right?
Like I say there was 3 showers and 3 toilets and so I NEVER actually had to wait... Well maybe just once or twice, which isn't bad for 3 years!
I would rather share bathrooms with 22 people than sharing a room with almost that many like you can get in some hostels
Still better than the "coffin" home...

To me, I just trust in God, as long as there is a roof over my head, I'm satisfied! The first tiny room in Hong Kong is still ok, well, the second one is much more better.I find that Hong Kong housings is very unique.
It’s only $700 a month. It’s affordable. In SF, I pay $3000 for a tiny basement.
druggies all over
Yeah I would 100% pay 700 a month for this in SF
And i thought the dorm room of a friends kid who grew up in hk was small. This one takes that cake ... Glad you upgraded.
Love your work Jack! enjoy the new place.
Thanks man! What are you up to these days. I totally miss 2005/06. Even the dungeon was bigger than our last place!
Much better! Can't wait to visit the new place, although the roof was pretty nice at Apple Dorm!
I stayed Tai Po, 4k hkd plenty space also private bath/toilet. 5th fl. no lift. I love my tiny home, love the park, love the market. love HK.
Hello Natasha. I really wanted to live there in Taipo because of the bike trail to where I work. Can you help give me contact to the landlord? Thanks. 🙂
I know how you feel, I live in HK and rent is the most expensive in the world that I know of! I'm glad you're appreciating your experience here!
Yeah and she can get out luckily.
Nine floors and no lift?!?!
Imagine getting down to the ground floor and realizing you forgot your phone. 😩😩😭😭
*Internal agony intensifies*
Flip side: You get strong legs and free exercise.
Yes we do!
probably was a pain in the legs to move all that furniture... It would be tough to buy groceries in bulk too.
Just came across your channel
God bless you
Love from sunny South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks, glad you like it.
I pity the hong kongers living in a small apartment with just one toilet. I’ve had a Hong Kong friend who told me it is not possible for everyone in the family to be at home bcos the unit is so small. They just come home to bathe and sleep at night. For those living in subdivided rooms, it’s even more depressing.
Omg. To think months ago I was watching this video back in the Philippines, now I ended up renting on the apple Dorm right next to the building you used to live. This one have a lift but no space for laundry like you had. This my first time outside my homeland so still adjusting. I think your new place is good and reasonably priced, though not sure what price now as this is 3 years ago. 🙂
8 months later... I'm still in appledorm 😁😅. I found a very good deal in Yuen Long, but thinking thrice a bit far from work (Shatin). Enjoying Sham Shui Po though
Very very grateful i live in Indonesia, maybe my income is very low compare to people in HK, but grateful l i have a landed house for 100 sq meter, in a nice Neighborhood with outdoor badminton and park. Most important free from debt/mortgage and rent..
Awesome vid dude. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing.. i really appreciate you share this experience with us
Watching them eat tacos in their hong Kong apartment was very surreal.
We eat local food most nights. Hard to resist a taco though, eh?
@@JackShirley When I saw her cooking, I was thinking "I wonder what interesting local dish shes preparing?" Lol. Nope, it's tacos! One cannot resist a taco.
What brave people holy
😊 Awesome stuff!
9th floor without lift very good healthy exercise anytime you're going out and coming back
So true. We're fit now
I'm glad you are happy in your new home, it is an improvement, the other home was like a rabbit hutch.
Thank you!
Hi louise, this is ur batchmate mark andrew hope ur ok keep safe also nice blog bro.
What a disgrace how much they are charged to live in that tiny dump!!!I wouldn't visit 1 of these countries if you payed me.
Wow its so small, I just moved to HK and didn't know rental deposit is so much! So thinking of staying at Apple dorm for 3 months until I can save some money! How was the cleanliness of the place and would you recommend it?
I found it to be very clean and didn't mind living there at all. I thought I'd only be there a few months and ended up staying for 3 years to save money. Haha
@@JackShirley haha oky thanks so much! I will then give it a try!
Tiny in size big on contentment. And nothing else matters..
I was thinking about this subject today (cost of square footage) while walking thru San Francisco Chinatown. There's a whole bunch of SRO's here in the city. Good luck with your place! Thanks for sharing, mate! Cheers
Did you and your gf share that tiny room for three years together? I aspire to that kind of harmonious relationship!
Yup. Wife now ;)
@@JackShirley Wow, don't know how you do it. You must have insane compatibility
Cried watchin him eat that dry taco💀😂
Thanks. I enjoyed it
Your video really describing. It's so helpful for me who gonna relocated there soon
Glad it helped you. :)
omfg I wanted to visit HK but can't live in such a tiny place...
I love HK been there for 4 years
@@josephineyarwood3001 us too! Been here for 10 now
Hello Jack, thank you for the information. May I ask if you are still living in the $5500 house?
Nice video mate. I been to HK, as a tourist, and loved it so much that I wouldn't mind living in that miniature apartment.
Moving out from a small space to another bigger smaller apartment and still feel happy. Move to Malaysia after you pension. You will feel way happier
Nine floors. No lift.
Cardio gotta be good.
Naku ate.,.,kahit maliit , ,,importanti malinis.,.,no matter how small youre place.,.,but you got every thing you need and most off all.,.,it should be clean.,.,just that clean., ,👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing
Cool vid Jack. Any recommendations on how to find an apartment in Sham Shui Po like the second flat in the video? Cheers!
We found it through an agency called Fu Wing you can find their offices on Google maps
Much appreciated!
766 USD = 1026 CAD
You'd be lucky to get an apartment like that in Vancouver for that price. Otherwise you'd normally only find basement suites.
Those basement units are palaces for hk people!
Don’t try to compare Hong Kong and Vancouver lol, HK is more expensive than Vancouver, renting, buying, everything. 10%-25% more expensive depending on the source
how elders live there without lift in higher floors ?
I pay 2,000 USD for a one bedroom in the United States because a studio apartment here is higher in rent. I rather live in an apartment like yours! I love it abd the price is awesome!
2k for a studio? You probably get some amenities right? I gave that up and found an older bldg that’s $1000 with utilities for a 1 bedroom.
How has life been for you two since the protests started? Considering taking a trip with my SO
The protests are easily avoided. Don't let them put you off visiting!
Yo my 1200 dollar apartment feels like a mansion….I’ve been humbled as a poor person in the US and it feels good lmao.😂
You win!
I know a couple of OFW's that left HK because of the rioting, you've got to be safer though living that high up!
I wouldn't call them riots. The protests really aren't bad in 95% of HK so no need to leave. Maybe leave the area if you live where police keep firing all the tear gas. Yh we're fine where we are, 9th floor helps as you say. :)
@@JackShirley I don't know, they had both just moved there to work when it all started kicking off and they said they didn't feel safe where they were living so they went back to the Philippines.
@@MakoyUnggoy Fair enough. We find it very safe but we aren't in the thick of it. It seems to have calmed right down since Sunday when the local elections took a MASSIVE swing in favour of the pro-democracy camp. However, the government aren't offering any concessions and if they continue to refuse what the people want then surely the protests will start up again.
omg , so sorry for her , that room is smaller than my bathroom .
What cartoon are you watching? Looks fun!
'Final Space' on Netflix. The first season was ok. We didn't watch any more
9th floor without a lift .
Atleast u will save on GYM membership .
you manage to stay for 3 years? I didnt last 3 months in apple sai yin pun...
i wish i was in such a cute relationship like yours lol
Aww thanks. Hope you find the one soon!
Are you real a support of the Antichrist God protect us from the Antichrist with one eye
She’s a real keeper. Very cute.
That's $500/mo?!! You need to move to Taiwan. That's outrageous. You can get a three-bedroom anywhere but Taipei for $500/mo.
You're tempting us.
@@JackShirley Teaching pays $20/hr and a typical salary is around $1500/mo if you're a Westerner in an office, instead. What do y'all do?
@@WormholeGarden I'm an English teacher and Louise is a receptionist. Not sure if she could get that sort of job in Taiwan though, as we don't speak the language :(
more vlogs please 😊
This is episode 50, watch the other 49 haha
@@JackShirley omo! new subscriber here haha anyways found you guys on Facebook 😂 and currently watching silent Ryan Gosling hehe
@@maytaurus7382 hope you like him as much as we do!
I feel for people who live in HK that have NO CHOICE in leaving. However, since you DID choose to live there, then, so be it. Stop complaining & move. Or stay & no whining.
As we say at the end of the video. "We're not complaining, we love it here."
but i cannot stand cooking next to the toilet bowl.
Who can?
I work as a driver in HK so my boss house is huge, so meaning she isvery rich, because we have 4 rooms plus mine . So no wonder she can pay me alot
I lived in Hong Kong for +5 years. Jack, have you considered moving to the New Territories into a village house? They are much cheaper and much much larger. You don't have to live all cooped up like this. If you are lucky you will even have your own private rooftop garden in the New Territories. Shatin is lovely, as are other areas.
Hi Diane! We've definitely considered it but we prefer the smaller house to the commute! We're about to move next door to a slightly bigger room for 700 more rent so we're very happy! Thanks for your consideration!
@@JackShirley I'm glad you are happy. We were very fortunate as we spent the first three years in a large (all three floors) village house in Tai Po. My husband was teaching in Yuen Long, so the commute was easy. After that he was offered a job in a private school in Stanley and we were given a large (+900 sq ft) three bedroom apartment above the boarding school, where we stayed for a further three years. There is no way we could afford to live in beautiful Stanley any other way. Plus living on campus meant no commute at all. The views were stunning.
You can’t touch wall to wall in most prison cell! 😳
Haha I never thought of that!
It’s mentally and physically unhealthy to live in such a tiny apartment.
That's why HK is the top 5 least happy place in the world.
That’s the everyday reality for many Hongkongers.
9th floor..no lift !
I was expecting a more inspiring comment...
I leave in hk too, my place is 6200 hkd ,one sitting room and one room also have lift...
Where abouts? We wanna move! ;)
@@JackShirley sham shui po
@@peterabraham3407 nice, Near apple dorm.
Hi jack. New to here! Can i ask where is the location of your second flat? Looks way better paying 2000 more only. I thought it would be 10000+, which is usually the case in hk, having the whole apartment.
It's in Sham Shui Po and its a 9floor walk-up so that's why it's cheap :)
@@JackShirley ssp again haha! So that means renting a lower floored one would be better! Any upcoming videos about hk haha?
@@Simonbacon023 would be better but more expensive. I hahent thought of any good ideas for any new videos.
@@JackShirley may share more about expats living in hk. Where are you from. What is the difference between living in your home town and a big city like hk. What do you do. how did you find a job and an apartment. Is it hard to meet new people… etc! Thanks support support!
I could see like 100-300 usd but 500 usd??
I have one question, people are poor, I understand but building owners are making good profit.
Why they are not arranging lift system. Renting is business associated with net profit, except property taxes. We need to make law for lift system in the building, toilet system and washing clothes system. People live in cage , where they are bathing or cleaning clothes.
Building owners can't rent all the space, they must make close toilet, bathroom and laundry system for washing clothes.
Just count how much rent is received and how much he is spending on painting or reparations.
Renting is an industry and all industry spend money on maintenance.
Namh shivay.
What’s the address of the flat you used to live in if you don’t mind me asking ?
Google Apple Dorm for the address.
Really so expensive to live h.k
I cannot imagine sharing bathroom and kitchen with another family. This is just overcrowding and not worth it. . .
your could get a 2br for 8000hkd. Don't blame the room. Blame yourself.
Please link me to that 2br :)
Although as you can see at the end we are quite happy with our 1br for 5500hkd and didnt blame any room
the positive thing: you donthave to pay for gym membership while living in HK
What do elderly people do? They can't climb 9 floors.
I even wonder how this young and healthy couple carry their groceries????
We just carry them in bags like most people ;)
@@JackShirley I know you do. I just meant to say that it must be difficult and tiring
Btw, how do you go finding new apartment? Do you go to agents? Or do I need to learn Cantonese first? 🙂
28 house website or something.
Thank you. Very handy. I hope I can move on by the next 3 months. 🙂
How the fuck you guys seem so happy???
3 years later: we've changed. Still happy but we want even more space now. Haha maybe we're becoming normal...

Why don't you come to Vietnam? It's cheap to live and you can easily get a job as a foreigner!
We do love Vietnam. We have another video of our trip there :)
Are you allowed to smoke in your own home then?
In apple dorm you had to smoke on the roof. We could smoke in our new flat if we were smokers.
So What neighbourhood is The New place in?
Still sham Shui po
@@JackShirley ok thanks I remember looking at apple dorm when they opened I think it was only 3000 back then
