If you’re looking for a short hike with 360-degree views of the giants of the South Cascades, this is the trail for you. Go in late summer and you can feast on huckleberries along the way.
The trail starts out climbing in timbers, delivering you to the backside of Steamboat Mountain, where you head up through thick trail-side huckleberry bushes. Big Mosquito and Little Mosquito Lakes show up to the west.
Behind you, Mount Hood pops up through the trees and you gain the ridgeline in no time. Seasonal wildflowers such as glacier lilies, paintbrush and columbine paint a colorful picture at your feet while views of Mount Rainier tease through the trees to the north. When you reach the top of the peak, behold the sights! The footings of the old fire tower are still in place, like a ghost of history. Once you’ve enjoyed the spectacular views and counted all the volcanos, head back the way you came.
