Im 15 yo and it goes me back to 80s that I never lived.. I feel nostalgia and I get goosebumps every time I hear it. For me its my favourite song of Depeche and also one of the most 80s songs in the world
I felt the same way when I was exactly your age. Never lived in the 80s, but always had a strong attachment to it, as if I was meant to live in that era. Now I'm 30, and still feel the same way. By the way- the music you listen to when youre 14-15 will be the music you will listen to forever. Cheers to good music taste 👍
It doesn't matter when the song was released it only matters the time when you listened to it. I was a teenager in the 1990s and I mostly listened to music like this, and it was considered out of date back then.
I might be alone here, but I think this is the best song of the album. It's mysterious, and I just love the synth elements. Gore and Clarke must have known they were onto something. It's cool that Clarke was sporting a light beard in 1981....an era that clean shaven was the look.
You are not alone! I've never been a fan of early DM but this was "head and shoulders" above all on this album. Funnily enough, I'm just looking at my DM collection from 1980- to 1993; I only collected 12"s but counted 210 so far (marbeled, limited et.al.... .)
First time, I played my cassette of "Speak And Spell", "Photographic", was the one that spoke to me the most. Still my favourite track from the album, today, 40 years on, since, the album was released. :)
You are definitely not alone! One of their best early song and Vince Clarke was at the right place, in the right band, who is my favorite musician since I heard his synthesizer music 40! years ago!
Photographic. A mythic paragon of evocative narration and one of the best songs of all time, perfectly encapsulates it's period. A taste of the early 80's. Now where did I park that time machine. It must be around somewhere...
There will never be a period of excellence like the 80s for DM. Photographic belongs to the Pantheon of Synthpop's eternal beauty. What a brilliant beginning for Depeche Mode. The innocence, the atmospheres, the energy, the exquisite timbres make not only this piece, but Speak & Spell entirely one of the best Synthpop LPs of all time. Special praise goes to Photographic itself, as well as Tora! Tora! Tora!, Big Muff, and of course the emotive Ice Machine. If you only know Just Can't Get Enough, go have a serious listen to this long play, for Speak & Spell will leave you floating among the clouds.
Мне 50 и все ещё слушаю DM и обожаю эту команду! Фотография - просто нечто, столько динамики и позитива, что постоянно, слушая эту тему, отбиваю такт и пританцовываю😉🔥🔥🔥
No doubt that Depeche Mode is the king of synthesizers. They certainly could get any electronic sound and make music, turn it into a hit. Love Depeche Mode.
Hmmm, were you even around in the 80's?.. Vince Clark was only inspired to get into electronic music after hearing OMD.. I only just discovered that and it makes perfect sense as I couldn't help but notice the similarity between the "Bright light/Dark room" in this and OMD's 'Red Frame/White Light'.. The early 80's was full of synth hits and DM were only a part of that - New Order's anthem 'Blue Monday' was the biggest synth hit of the day by far..
Depeche Mode went far with synths, and while everybody has different tastes, it was only Vince Clark, even from this early album, who created almost every sound from scratch using analog synthesis. All patches, wires and cables. Which he still uses with Erasure. He is highly respected in the recording industry (in general), and he technically might actually be The King Synthesizers. (Maybe D-Mode takes second!).
Depeche Mode were actually more into samplers, and less into synths, they sampled sounds from anything and everything, and played them on the keyboard. They used a sampler called "Emulator Emax" and others. The sampling of natural sounds is called "Musique Concrete". This is really what made the DM sound so distinctive from other New Wave bands. The synths came later, but samplers were really their sound source.

Дэвид красавчик . для своего времени. через 30 лет наши дети так же будут писать про нынешних исполнителей. к сожалению время и музыка не стоят на месте . До сих пор слушаю их. Такие видео надо сохранять .
I was 5 years old while dancing to their songs on the vinyls my dad has collected. I am 21 now and this still feels sooo nostalgic. Depeche Mode is my absolute favorite band.
Мне 44. И я понимаю, что в детстве полюбил нечто, по-настоящему прекрасное. Теперь эту музыку полюбила моя 12-летняя дочь. Депеш будет со мной до конца моих дней. Аминь.
After this album Vince Clark left Depeche Mode. He wrote all the songs. The magazines were saying Depeche Mode was finished. Then Martin Gore stepped up and began writing the songs. The rest is history.
+terry2315 yes Vince formed Erasure & Yaz one of the rare cases when the person leaving & the band he left both got better afterwards(Genesis another example)
+terry2315 Martin actually wrote two songs, "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Big Muff", but Vince did write the rest and all of the hits back then. I don't blame the magazines for assuming that DM were doomed because aside from Dave singing (but not writing) the songs, the rest of the band didn't do much creative work--it was (almost) all Vince and Dave at the time. These two were also the promoters who sought deals with record labels and such--Martin and Fletch didn't take the band 100% seriously early on since they both had decent day jobs. One possible reason that Vince left was that Martin, whom Vince really wanted in the band, was always "shy" about writing songs and even shier about collaborating on them. Since Vince did most of the work anyway, he thought he might as well work with a variety of singers anyway, and as a "power" producer he wouldn't have to go on tour and things like that (didn't enjoy that or performing live). He still planned to write songs for DM, too, if they'd have this, but his leaving and all of the negative press about DM's future lit a fire under the band, especially Martin who obviously decided to start cranking out songs. He's still shy about collaborating, though--he has never collaborated on songs within DM (he writes alone and Dave collaborates with others), and only in the last few years has he started to collaborate with Vince (of all people) as VCMG. Vince, on the other hand, prefers to collaborate, so for this and other reasons he wasn't a good fit for DM. He also left Yazoo since they wrote separately and couldn't stand each other personally, but has stuck with Erasure for decades because he and Andy Bell collaborate closely and get along well.
+orgonko the wildly untamed There was just so much talent to start with and they were just getting started, which is why things turned out this way, and yes it is rare, especially since talent unfortunately doesn't always translate into success (if we're counting the latter at all). Additionally, I think that Vince leaving DM really gave Martin the motivation and ironically the confidence that he had been lacking previously.
Oh man.. The Nostalgic feels. This band literally changed my life, and has left a mark for the last 30 years. Dave, Martin, Andy and Alan.. I can't begin to thank you enough.
Looking and sounding so innocent pure and even little frightened and then still the voice is so deep... those shy moves still deliver the message of the lyrics... this is just genius! They were so young and adorable still his voice has so many shades that it is out of this world even at that time! Precious Dave and DM Forever! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

alexandra binkowski Yes, very. I sing to this every mother fucking day.. It's a amazing song from 1980/1981, later on, song's are getting better, my most favorite song from DM is Shake the Disease/Enjoy the Silence/Strangelove. Such beautiful melody's.

I don't like their first album, but this song is perfect. So much inspired by Kraftwerk. Amazing.

I saw them twice and they sound perfect live.
Vince Clarke the Maestro of Synth. Heavily underrated this piece 🖤
Rest in Peace, Fletch. Taken from us way too soon. But DM is timeless, the music plays forever xx
I'm 62 now...saw DM in 82...smallish venue...I was 21 then..Dave blew me away...that jacket..that twirl...changed my whole music direction...
