It's a bit of a sad one, but maybe that's just what we need after a December filled with nothing but wonders and joy, to remind us that life can't always be a colorful rainbow road. Every once in a while you've just got to have that one dark moment that makes all of the bright moments shine even brighter :)

Ok, I think the comment should have some sort of expanding option, so it should be ok. X3 Anyway, the anime, being about magic girls who get to choose one wish as they become a magical girl, has the conflict of witches inhabiting earth since the dawn of time. Ancient aliens have populated the Earth, but have no emotions. They have created both witches and magical girls, two opposites. The witches are completely abstract monsters that seem to have extraordinary power, being able to create their own corrupted dimensional reality inside themselves, and bring it out on the real world over time. It turned out that witches are what magical girls become after a magical girl dies, which is what Madoka (the main character that is in the cover art you have.) found disturbing. Many of her friends were lost to the witch inside them, and there came a time when she started to find out that Homura (a magical girl with the power to control time) had tried going back in time again and again to try and save Madoka from her fate of becoming the most powerful witch in history. Each time she went back in time, though, she simply got stronger. Eventually it was said that if Madoka were to make her wish in the process of becoming a magical girl, she could wish on anything, even if it could bend the entire idea of reality. Homura begged Madoka over and over again throughout time not to become a magical girl, and eventually, when she was powerful enough and after Homura explained to her all of this, Madoka decided what wish she needed to make.
She made the wish that all magical girls would not become corrupted and not turn into witches. The thing is, magical girls have powers relating to their wish, so Madoka became something like an eternal angel. She protected magical girls since the beginning of time, at that point, as magical girls continued to protect humanity. Homura was the only one who was able to remember everything, and found it so sad but beautiful to see Madoka at work, although not able to speak with her anymore.
Oh, well that was indeed pretty deep. Some of the things I've read before about the show makes a bit more sense now :) Thanks for the summary!
