  • Nii Odartey Lamptey was once hailed as Pelé's "natural successor" and the next global football sensation after catching the Brazilian legend's eye at the 1989 U-16 World Cup. However, those four words - "the next Pelé" - would come to haunt Lamptey's career in a spectacular implosion.
In this longform video, we delve into how Pelé's legendary praise distorted the destiny of one of Ghana's most promising football talents. We unravel the psychological toll of being overhyped as the greatest successor before even starting a professional career, and how the immense pressure crushed Lamptey's spirit at just 14 years old.
From Lamptey's remarkable rise to becoming the player of the 1991 U-17 World Cup, which Ghana won, to his nomadic senior career spanning 14 clubs across 4 continents by age 31, we trace his journey from the streets of Accra to the heights of world football and back into obscurity. Along the way, we uncover forgotten details of his wildly disappointing career implosion after being anointed as the heir to the King.
Filled with personal struggles, exploitation, and family tragedies, Lamptey's story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of hype in sports. This emotional roller coaster explores the burden of overhyped expectations on young athletes, showing how even a legend's compliments can distort a prodigy's destiny in profound ways.
Are you ready to witness how Pelé's praise for Nii Lamptey went horribly wrong?

He never flopped on the pitch . It's the Abedi - Yeboah and the GFA caused it all 😢😢

He was an amazing footballer. Could have been as big as Abedi Pele. But his problem was that he didn't get the experienced person to guide him on his career and as well as also getting a powerful spiritual man to work on his spiritual side. Most of these problems he encountered were spiritual. I saw him and he was as talented as Abedi Pele

The reason Pele rated this guy very high among his peers is because he didn't know this guy was at least 4yrs older than the guys he was playing with. I sat in the same class with Yaw Preku at star village in Legon in 1989 when I was in six form Yaw playing in the under 17 World Cup as a 15 year old. Odartey was just a good footballer but not exceptional
