Corman filmmaking is like a good community college; the cost is very low, you get real world experience, no respect from others, and some of his best graduate onto bigger and better things.
Corman made some of the best horror movies of the 50s and 60s.Masque of the Red Death,House of Usher,Tomb of LigeiaThe Raven,Not of This Earth etc

And I was a kid this movie scared me so bad! I saw it on cable over at my older sister and boyfriends house one Saturday afternoon. The fact that this man would not leave her alone was like the human version of The Terminator! Woo, miss me up for a little while. "Cookie!, cookie!" 😫
This reminds me of the exploitation thriller Angel (1984), directed by Robert O'Neil. If I remember correctly there was a whole string of these throughout the early 80’s.
Angel is a great film. Ebert gave it a thumbs up. It was before it's time with LGBTQ representation.
Angel was good, but Avenging Angel, the sequel, was even better

I used to stare at that VHS cover everytime I went to video store as a kid........it stirred things in my young mind !
I was honestly surprised to see Melissa Leo in this as I was used to her as a world weary older actress. But she’s always been an amazing actress.
I mentioned above that I really only knew her from one of my favorite TV shows, Homicide: Life on the Street, where she played a detective.

Especially that story about the client with a thing for"needles." HBO used to have documentaries about this sort of thing and that was one of the stories one of the subjects talked about.
Something something simulacra. I get the sense if it is too real, people have self-recognition and get deeply offended. Better to maintain a safe distance to gawk through sensationalism so that dividing line can be maintained (see true crime stories).

@@SeptienPatterson Might have something to do with prostitution being legal in large swaths of Europe, not to mention the story was centered around the American experience of prostitution so that distance could be maintained.
Time for a revisit, I haven't seen this movie since the late 80s. In some ways it was part of an unintended genre trilogy...starting with "Vice Squad" 1982 & ending with "Street Smart" 1988. Besides , any movie with "Catwoman, "Huggy Bear/ Fly Guy" & that guy who played the dad in the original "Pet Cemetery" 1989 is a must see!. Amazing how many young & talented individuals both in front of & behind the camera have worked with Roger Corman over the Decades. He definitely has an eye for talent & the pulse of what movie fans want to see.
Far from being embarrassed, I have seen a lot of interviews with actors and directors who praise Roger Corman for giving them their start in the business.
Great summation of Cormans legacy. From what many have said, he did peddle sleaze but was not sleazy himself, especially compared to a huge amount of so-called legit producers.

Corman needs to be awarded a lifetime achievement Oscar before his time runs out.
So many crazy stories from the industry. But another good thing about Corman, is that he proved cinema is mostly simple. People don't care about false pretences of artistic value. They like entertainment in movies. If they are, they will see it.
Corman made some good films....his Poe adaptations were very consistent.... one of my favorites just behind William Castle with mention to Ed Wood.... entertainment... just my opinion
I just went and watched that and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good Bad always delivers.
The theme for this always gets stuck in my head, Melissa Leo does a good job and Joan Freeman made a solid, sleazy flick.
I would have loved to have put up a picture of the director but the only one I could find was covered in watermarks.

the fact that it was a starting point rather than seen as a black mark on their resumes is a rarity for this kind of film, and Leo sees it as just that: it’s a great showing of her true talent, rather than garbage done for a paycheck
Excellent film, a must for any serious film collector. Dale. Melissa and Randall were all 3 excellent in their roles. Great slice of 80's cake.

Working for Cormen sounds very stressful, but he got shit done. It is a shame that Hollywood is such a cesspit.
I love the stories about Corman-productions. They're always such a wild ride. Streetwalkin actually seems like something really special. I need to see this at some point.

There's a Jack Nicholson interview where he talks about doing Corman films, he said that although the films weren't that great it was a good experience and every actor was trying their best!

Thank you very much for this video, not only because of the movie and the main actress which by the way, was freaking amazing on the film "Prisoners", but because I never thought of Roger Corman as someone who could prepare first time directors for the film industry, my respects to Corman, and most of all my respects to you Cecil. I think this is my of my many favorites of Exploring next to the Dark Hole and, Cannonball Run and Freejack. I would really like to see one episode for 1992 amazing SciFi horror film "Split Second" which happens to have the name of my favorite racing game of all time as well.

Corman is absolutely one of the most important figures in the industry. I have to check this one out.
I love Corman. Hes a consummate artist that too many think of as a gear in the corporate machine of cinema. He worked at a time when larger budget films had more safe subject matter....so he swung for the fenses and just looked for what stuck.
Corman stayed in business all these years because he never forgot that this was a business and he was giving audiences what they wanted.
@@GoodBadFlicks watching this really gives you a sense of the economy of content...sex, drugs, explosions, 4-letter words, gore.... anything that becomes taboo in polite society, becomes food for our starved collective subconscious.
It is really a fantastic, dark film set in my favorite city. Great back story.
I've never heard anyone bad-mouth Roger Corman... I have a buddy who went to film school at the University of Toronto and when I needled him about good/bad directors he just said "Michael Bay" and kind of dropped the subject. I was not quite sure what he meant but he ended up going back to school for industrial electrician 5 years later...
There's a certain pretension that goes with Hollywood making high art while churning out...
Same type of tension between "serious" musicians and punk rock. Those who know, know.

a late comment on this video but i'm rewatching it for the third time and it's something i've always wanted to say and this one feels the most appropriateto say it on:
you're one of my favourite movie channels on youtube, and it's exactly work like this that is why. the care with which you reserach and highlight many unknown or forgotten films is tremendous. i've always loved your channel because there is always an underlying enthusiasm for giving voice to the stories of filmmakers, actors, crews, writers, etc. who don't have a prominent voice of their own today. even with truly, objectively terrible movies where it's hard to say something nice, you always try to find a way to approach with appreciation for the effort and creative vision that people invest in their work, even if they ultimately fail. it's that kind of attitude that always makes me so excited to see a new "Exploring" video in my subscriptions, as well as your review breakdowns and top 5s.
as an audience, it means i always walk away from your videos learning about a passion project someone made that i never would have otherwise known about, and as a creative myself it's reassuring and inspiring because it reminds me that however small i feel, or how much of a failure i sometimes feel like my work is, there are going to be people who appreciate it.
while i don't think you're a small creator, i wanted to return that sentiment to you. i love and appreciate your work, and the very obvious care, research, enthusiasm, and humour you instill into it. it's a sentiment i always felt, but never got around to saying even though it deserved to be said sooner. it was when watching this video, and you talking about how cathartic and meaningful it was to many sex workers to see their voices finally heard and acknowledged in the movie, that prompted me to write this comment that i've been meaning to write for a while. everyone likes and deserves to know that their work is seen and appreciated. it's nice to say you're doing things because of your own passion for the subject, but it's still valuable to know that other people love your work too and feel a connection to it.

Its on the list. Really solid film, it may have been the first of its kind.
Awesome to see some respect for Roger Corman; the people endlessly shitting on him don't understand the talent, dedication and work ethic this man has. And his films often have actual heart and ambition, even if they're low budget, unlike the utter trash produced by people like Uwe Boll.
GBF, I always wanted to ask you, do you have any background on the film industry? I'm amazed to see how much you know about old legends of the industry and (obviously you do your research) the tiny details you come up with in your videos!
The discovery of your channel rekindled my passion for movies from when I was single digit old and rented movies to watch saturday nights together with my family
No formal experience per se but I have worked on a bunch of small (and I mean SMALL) film projects with friends. I used to be a video editor for one of the largest colleges on the east coast although my education stemmed from communications. (I originally wanted to be a radio host) I've been lucky enough to talk to/become friends with some really great people who in fact have worked in the industry and they fill me in on many BTS stories and what not. Beyond that, I just am natuarally inquisitive and I try as best as I can to dig up info about all kinds of movies. Sometimes, directors/producers/etc will contact me personally with a "if you think that movie was nuts, wait until you hear what happened on this one!". If I can't get a hold of anyone directly, I will check out old news articles, interviews, commentaries and what not to get as much of the story as I can.

@@GoodBadFlicks Not sure what you've done towards becoming a radio host, but you show talent there, your voice never gets boring and I catch myself rewind over and over again to replay some reveals you make on your script (like in this one when you told about the director having 2 spies on set)

I just went and watched that and it was very watchable and for a first time director you can see why Joan made it into Hollywood. The movie site I watched it on gave it a 5.8/10 and that is spot on. I would give it a 6. Good movie for its time and subject matter.

If you didn’t mention the name of that young actress in the film. I never would of recognised her! Melissa Leo is a superb actress. Jennifer Connelly said the same thing about ROCkETEER, as well as Nicole Kidman about BMX BANDITS! I guess artists always feel the need to move on in their work, and not dwell on past performances?! 🤔. Never a true word was said though. In your last closing words for this film! Fascinating stuff! Who's old enough to have seen the movie Vice Squad during it's theater release in the 1980's? Season Hubley was my second hollywood crush(following Linda Blair). And coincidentally I was talking about that movie a day ago to a kid in his 20's how I grew up viewing Hard rated-R crime, sci-fi and fantasy films. I was way underage but it was the 1970's - 1980's and I was accompanied by an adult(father son weekend bonding). My first movie memory is Dawn Of The Deads orginal theater release. Thanks GBFs for the jaunt through memory lane.
And before I go let me just add that Ramrod from Vice Squad went waaay over the top went his actions. He knocked himself by canceling the contracts of all his girls. Dude was nearly supervillain tier status during his rampage 😆😂.

I didn’t know about this movie until after I discovered Treme. So it was a little weird seeing Khandi Alexander and Melissa Leo, who spend many scenes together in s1 of Treme, in this.
Growing up I used to watch the show Time Trax all the time. Dale Midkiff was awesome in that one.

For me she kills Basinger and Pfeiffer on looks. Like any of the 80s actresses. I feel like she is only niche as far as fans go. I love her so much.

To this day I can't believe that there was a Roger Corman movie with Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Hazel Court, Olive Sturgess and when I was five, Jack Nicholson. The movie was The Raven. Now, thinking on this. Was The Raven a working or vacation film? For Jack definitely a working film. House of Usher, The Raven, Streetwalkin, producing or directing Corman moves the bar around.

Corman is interesting. He's known for shlock, but whenever I hear that a director started out working for him, it's like a big plus on their resume.
It because he instills a "meat and potatoes" value in each person to come out of the "Roger Corman Film School". They understand the fundamentals of filmmaking and how to work within limits.

I disagree that Streets was Christina Applegate's breakout movie role. She was an established TV actress from Married with Children, so Streets didn't introduce her or make a big impact. I'd argue that her breakout movie role was the following year in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

Minor correction about your awesome poster lineup at the end: Steven Spielberg directed Saving Private Ryan, but Ron Howard directed Grand Theft Auto. If you could somehow change the poster for Saving Private Ryan to A Beautiful Mind or Apollo 13, that poster lineup would be perfection!

Having watched your channel for a bit. I would never anything bad about the Producer.
I agree with both Martin Scorsese and George Lucas. Roger Corman didn't JUST hire women directors to pay THEM last, Rodger Corman paid every one less.
I've read several articles with directors that worked with Rodger Corman. If he thought you had talent, he would give you a break but the caveat was that there was almost no money in it. Just ask Ron Howard.

@@chrisbarrett8377 I can tell you every director, cinematographer, special effects artist, and editor that went through the Rodger Corman University. So yes, I know James Cameron worked for Rodger Corman. But he did not make the comments about female directors, Martin Scorsese and George Lucas did.
