  • The planets orbit the Sun in a counterclockwise direction as viewed from above the Sun's north pole, and the planets' orbits all are aligned to what astronomers call the ecliptic plane. The story of our greater understanding of planetary motion could not be told if it were not for the work of a German mathematician named Johannes Kepler.

Great video, thanks! It's staggering that Kepler figured all this out from the data he had in 1600, and he didn't even know about gravitation.

Thanks a lot for great material. The only thing I would correct is the position of Prague. You have probably changed it for Berlin. Prague is much closer to Graz.

they are counter clockwise only if seen from the north pole of the Earth, if you place yourself on the south pole, the orbits become clockwise, it is just a definition.

It's above the SUN's North Pole. One would have to be at the sun's South Pole to contemplate the motion of the planets clockwise.

Anyone else here bc they “know how it works” but can’t explain it? Haha I am sure I’m not alone. If I can’t explain it, I don’t truly understand it, even if I can pass an exam
