There's many options for tractor tires on the market, but it seems like you really only see few main options on most machines. Most OEM manufacturers like John Deere and Kubota really don't have much variety to offer and so you might have to go aftermarket to find the right tires for your machine. There really doesn't seem to be a lot of information about the benefits and drawbacks of different tread patterns. Hopefully this video provides some valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of different tractor tire tread patterns that are available on the market.
First, let's review the standard options. R4 Industrial tires are the wide, flat bar tires that migrated over from the heavy construction equipment industry. Generally viewed as an all-purpose tire with great tread life and somewhat considered a staple in the compact tractor market. R3 Turf tires are going to be your standard lawn and garden variety and if mowing is a primary task without much need for tackling off-road projects, then these could be a good option to consider. R1 Agricultural tires are what you see farmers using whether plowing, planting, or harvesting. When you think of a farm tractor, you picture it with these tires.
www.goodworkstractors.com/prod...
A couple of less popular options (I predict these will grow significantly in market share in coming years) are hybrid radial tires including the Carlisle Versa Turf, Goodyear R14, and Galaxy Pro R3+. A somewhat similar tire pattern is the bias HDAP (Heavy Duty All Purpose) which is found on a lot of high end garden tractors with similar patterns found on ATV's and UTV's.
Follow along to take a closer look at the tread patterns, understand the construction differences, and see where each one of these tractor tire tread patterns excels. If you haven't done so yet, please consider subscribing to my channel and check out the links below for more information on where to buy.

Excellent video! The industrial R4 tires are harder so that they will last on concrete or paved surfaces. This is the exact opposite of what you need on ice. Car snow tires use a softer compound than Summer tires to increase traction. More surface area is better on ice, maybe not so much on snow. Lost of guys end up cutting sipes in their aggressive tires to get more biting area.
Living in Maine, I've been quite successful with my R3 Turf tires all year round. I have a set of chains but have yet needed to put them on.
I have switched to the HDAP tires on my John Deere 216, and 332 they are so much better on the lawn, on the hills, in the snow and out in the woods. I can go places that I never could reach with my R-3 tires. I wish I could find versa tread or equivalent for my 2520 to replace the R-3 turf tires and I don't want R-4s because I need traction in the winter too. Great video, Thanks!
Nice comparison and good perspective on tread patterns, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for that great breakdown! I love watching your videos and all the great info you put out. I have a JD 1025 with the R4s and live in El Paso, TX so they work great in the caliche and rocky ground. I think I'd like to try the versa turf's when the R4s wear out and see how they do on the hard ground here. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Courtney! Making info great again as always. I had dual ag tires on an old Allis Chalmers B110 years ago, was a beast, went everywhere pulled anything, was not nice to the yard, I'm not picky about my grass so it didn't matter. You are right, they went no where on snow and ice. Now I have R4s on my 1025 and they work ok but those versaturfs interest me.
Morning John, thanks for chiming in John!
Love the turfs use them for dirt work tilling etc, plus great in winter. Perfect all around tread.
Hello,
Nice video, and easy to understand info.
Especially de extra explanation about the R4 is very informative.
I fully agree.👍
Cheers from Belgium
Thank you sir! Great to hear from you :)
Great info in this video. I have been running the stock turf tires on my 1025R for 5 years now. I mainly mow grass and clear snow and they have been great. I have a TLB so I have used them across several projects during this time on varying surfaces and weather conditions. The only issue I recall was in the Spring time helping a neighbor fill sink holes in his yard in a very wet area (we didn't really see at the time we went into it) and I got the machine stuck. We caught it in time and got it out before doing too much damage and avoided that area until it dried up and we could finish the job, but not sure we could have done any better with another tire. Based on what you have summarized here, when it comes time to replace these tires, I may wander on over to the radial option. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice testament to the abilities of the turfs. Thanks for sharing as always sir! Have a great day!
My Dad’s BX 1850 has the R3’s and my Kioti CS has the R4’s. I believe everything you mentioned about each of these to be spot on. I am impressed with the R3’s abilities in the snow and I believe it’s due to their tread contact with the surface that makes them do well. Also their longevity are worth mentioning, they are 13 years old with no problems. The R4’s are new to me on tractors anyway, so far I’m pleased with their performance.
Thanks for chiming in Jeremy!
Great info! I think your assessment of the tires was reasonable for sure. I have a new Kubota LX2610 w/R14's and 20hrs in I love them so far. I had a B7500 with R3's for 19 years so I have something to compare to.
Awesome, thanks for chiming in!
Man I really enjoy your videos! Subscribed!
Great content as always. Thanks
I am running R1 style tires on my Kubota B2320. I use them when im bush hogging in fields and of course when ive got the tiller attached. They do leave marks in wet conditions so im careful as to where around the house i drive it. Ive got about 800 hours on my machine and still have the original tires. As was commented, i try not to run on pavement to save wear and tear. A great tire in my opinion.
Your video are 10,000% so good and so helpful:)
Thanks as always Nate!
I live in East Texas, on 365 acres, and all our tractors are conventional R-1 bias from our small tractors (650-1050 JD) to our 100 horse tractors, and they've never let us down, I even cut my lawn with my 650 with traditional "Tractor tires" and if done carefully, and almost exclusively when its hard and dry, the damage is very manageable. worth it in my opinion for the traction gained in the field, it had turf tires when we got it years ago and cutting fence rows required a chain and another tractor nearby to drag you out of the slightest wet areas. so we swapped out to 9.5-16 R-1's about 800 hours ago and like the results, but thats just for our application, if you had a large lawn and that was the sole use for the machine I could see the appeal of less aggressive rubber.
I really like the HDAP's on my JD X738. They have worked well in grass, snow, and sand. My 2025R has the R4's. I wanted the one's JD offered that look similar to your versatracks.
Yeah, HDAP's hold a special place in my heart!
You're videos 📹 are absolutely 💯 awesome 👌.
Haha, thanks so much!
Great job 👍 on video. Thanks for all the info you do.
Thanks so much for watching Virgil!
Great video! I had the R4 tires on my 1025r when I bought it new. I slid all over my driveway with them...the first time I slid down my driveway sideways that was it! I got the turf tire and have not slid once since. Great tires. But, I would like to try the Versa Tuff tires very soon. Thanks for sharing this info ...
Good info, thanks as always Mike!
Great video! Thank you! Just purchased a 2032 and wanted more information on the tires that are on it!!
I have had the turf tires, changed out to the HDAP for better traction for winter without chains. They work great for me, much preferred. The radials seem to be more for commercial usage, unless you running on a dirt track. (lol)
Great job! I'm pretty sure I saw a JD 2 series tractor this past summer that was shod with the VersaTurf (sp?)! Neil @Messick's has a traction comparison video that swayed me toward a tire often referred to as a BarTurf or Goodyear Xtra Trac. Unfortunately, my Kubota dealer quoted me an outlandish price so I opted for the R14s on my new B2601. Glad to hear they perform well in the snow!
Thanks for following along!
Very informative. I have the HDAP on my Kubota BX2380. Didn't have the new Radials yet. Would like to have them but can't see having 3 sets of tires.
I just found out you are in Michigan! Holy crap haha. I am right in Jackson, I love your videos! I will stop out sometime
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Exactly what I needed.
Great video! Thanks for the explanation. It sounds like these versa turf tires rock. I’m looking to purchase my first 1025R and was building it online. Is the 26x12-12 (4PR, R3 Turf, 1 Position) Radial Ply option for the rear tires the versa turf of does JD not offer these yet when building new tractors?
I have r4 on my workmaster 60. They do pretty good in the field as well as on fire and paved road between fields and pastures.
Last week I had a tree fall on a fence and the r4 dug in well. I am sure the ag tire would have dug in just as well.
Yes, R1 Ag's will have the best traction in dirt/mud for sure. Thanks for watching!
thanks for all explaining I just bought my 1025 well I have 16 hrs on it I purchase the versa turf and found out cutting my grass that they are a little tuff on my yard they tend to tear it up on turns and I not the most level piece of ground on this earth so I think im going back to a regular turf tire for mowing ,my Gravely's all had turf tires ,but also were a lot lighter tractor. However I have been digging in the woods and those versa turf are fantastic way better that ag
thanks again for all your time on your vidsI am sure it cuts in to your private life a lot
Great tire comparison! I've been wanting the Goodyear R14 to replace the turfs on my BX, but my dealer said they aren't available yet
Hey Frank, you can get the Versa Turfs right now like what I have on my 1025r.
Always great videos. Question: On our vineyard, I think I could get away with the R4 at the front and save some major wear issues.
So Can I have R1 in the back, and R4 in the front?
Kubota L3560 with loader.
I have R4 right now but I do like the versa tracks. Can I run in the winter the R4s in front and the versa track on the rear or will I have to buy a set of versa tracks for the front also? By the way, great videos, keep up the great work. I may not always need or want what you show but it is nice to see what is out there and to learn more about what you can and can't do with a tractor. Just a few more things to do and check and the BX will be ready for snow. Who knows maybe no snow this year, yeah right.
I put some HDAP tires on my 1445 front mower and it made a world of a difference and doesn’t tear up the grass too much
Nice hearing that those Versa-Turfs really are the cat's meow, all vidoes and my limited experience show how awesome they are nearly everywhere.
The R4 skid-steer tires are almost hopeless, it always amazes me that they're on so many new machines when their sole purpose is long-life on concrete for crazy heavy machines like skid steers. And those have the weight to keep traction on those high-contact tires unlike most compact tractors, unless you only use your tractor to move snow on paved surfaces those will always be my last choice. They slip going up trailers/ramps, slip in mud, slush, ice, snow, grass.
I had the grass masters on my Dixie Chopper and recently switched to the Versa Turf. Tires don’t spin as much, it holds the hills better, and doesn’t tear up turf anymore than the grass masters
I learned something new - thank you...
My 2025r with the R4 tore up a section of the lawn when spreading mulch. I found it easier to carve a path through the woods to reach the back of the house from the barn than having to redo my lawn every year. Bonus was my wife loved the new look of the woods cleared of the brush :)
Funny how things work out!
Trimming the underbrush makes the trees look taller
@@andrewkmac3507 Loved that BlueCollar "Big Deck" skit! A Classic!
Good stuff Courtney. As a off road motorcycle rider rubber compound has alot to do with traction. Soft rubber better traction but wear faster. Hard rubber better wear less traction. Radials are better because they conform to the terrain better.
I am running r3 turf tires on my Ford 1220. Which work fine, even for snow plowing. I would only pay more for a tire that doesnt get flats while brush hogging.
Yet another outstanding informational offering from GWT. I now know more about rubber than Trojan! :)
🤣👍 Oh man, now that was a good one!
@@GoodWorksTractors I was giggling like heck while I was typing it :)
I agree that my R-4's on my 3038e are terrible in snow and ice. Think I'll try chains.
Good video, thanks.
I'm wondering how well the sidewall on the radials hold up? I assume they balloon out a bit more than a bias ply, making them more vulnerable to rocks, roots or other hidden sharp stobs. I have the r4's currently, so of course I've been stuck numerous times, and looking at the sidewalls reveal several nasty gouges. I'm usually careful with my equipment, so I'm sure they got there while I was spinning the tires wildly in mud up to the steering wheel trying to extract us... Did I mention r4's will get you stuck? LoL, they're almost as bad as the diamond tread turf savers that were on the ol' ford jubilees we used on the golf course decades ago. LoL
I bought my 1025r with turfs, traded in a bx1500 with turfs for it. Had John Deere 318 &316s with turfs. Living in Vt we have a long snow season as well as a mud season, and turfs perform just fine in every situation we threw at them with a few caveats. The 2wd garden tractors had to have chains in the winter. I think the old rubber was just too hard to work well without them. The sub compacts added 4wd and a lot of weight with the addition of the loader and rear 60” blower. Never had traction issues. Most loader ops were fine on the dry dirt or even most summer grass situations. If it had rained before work, or there was a clay based soil, or anything in the woods... had to be in 4wd just to scathe by. Note I don’t do that stuff often so it’s fine (for me). I don’t find chains to work well on pavement as they do a lot of damage to the asphalt.
I have a long background in heavy equipment. Father a retired deere mechanic, me an army engineer of 20 years. I’d love to move to the Versa turfs or a variant now that they are around but I don’t see that happening till my next tractor purchase to replace the 1025 in 10-20 years. Love the videos. Between you, messicks, an ttwt, it’s a holy trinity for tractor information regardless of brand loyalty, most of the information between you three is versatile enough to apply across the market. I spend a lot of time watching them finding it’s a confirmation of everything I’ve been taught in 95% of the instances. My project scale is suited to road and airfield construction, but I dabble in subcompact work on the side because it’s easy for me. My attachments currently include 60” rear blower, front loader and forks, 4ft rear brush cutter, weight box, rear sweeper, and mmm. Also have a z so I don’t find much use in a mmm anymore. But worthy keeping on hand for odd jobs
Thanks for taking the time to share!
Gutzee looking quick hitch on your tractor!
Speeco! :)
I opted for turf tires with my upcoming 1025R
Great tire rating . . the new machines (year) 2021 ~ on the 2025r JD are out with the Versa-a-turf radial tires . . . front and back . . .. I am running them on my machine . . .they are a lot more money at the start up . . and like all machines when people look at tractors they 'think tires are just tires' not true . . I live in Massachusetts and I sometimes get into slick greasy clay . .not to often and with this kind of soil it wont matter what kind if rubber your running ' its usually going to be a long day' . . . i myself would not put a 25k plus machine in those kinds of situations . . . .thanks your tire run down . . .Great comparative display . . .
Thank you sir for your insight.. I am taking delivery on a 3033r and they are coming with R4s, I just called my salesman to halt the shipment as I have an extremely sloped gravel 100 foot drive in the tip top of Michigan and we get 300" per year. How do you feel that would work with HDAP or R3s.. I'm filling the rears and may (or should) I use chains in front? Any advice would help. Have a great day
john deere x495, current tires are turf but I use chains snow blowing with 47 inch blower attachment. the tractor doesnt' turn that great with the snow blower down.. Am interested in the versa turf and my question is would I still need chains and would the fronts be better for turning in the snow? Would like to get away from chains as I don't take them off in the summer, I just mow with them on as they are such a pain in the ass to put on and take off. Thanks for the info
I like the Versaturf concept, but with my 1025R doing mowing, bush hogging, tilling gardens, and lots of FEL work, I think I better stick with the OEM R4s.
Nearing 600 hours now and they still look awesome and are extremely tough.
Tough and hard ride too.
Have you noticed the R4’s digging in or tearing up the grass while mowing in the spring when the ground is softer?
You can get the Garden Master R3 radials on the 2032R and 2038R. Most requested tire right now at our dealership. Seems you and TTWT have made them pretty popular
Nice, good tire for sure!
Just got r1s for my garden tractor but as far as plowing goes I'm going to be running chains so my tires won't do much for plowing but I'm going to be doing other things with it were they may become handy pulling tree stumps out with it mowing over grown weeds that may possibly have mud as far as mowing goes I do my nixes finish cuts with my zero turn that I will only put terf tires on for the exact reason u said ag tires will destroy your lawn ezpectaly if your not carefull
My first 2 winters with R4s were fine. After the lugs had rounded a bit from use, the third winter was pretty bad traction wise. Im watching an R14 set on eBay for my BX23S. Probably pulling the trigger on them for this winter.
We just bought a new B2650 with the R-14's. Haven't really had a chance to test in anything yet, but they look like the best of both worlds to me. By the way, my dealer does not charge more or less for any tire we wanted.
That's good news! I know the Galaxy Pro's are an upcharge on the JD 2 Series for example.
Thanks for calling attention to those, didn’t know they were available. Looks like I’ll be putting a pair of the Goodyear R14T on the front my MF GC1705. I’ll keep the R4s on the rear. Weights, spacers, beat juice in the rear will be a pain to swap.
liked the info, but what about say gravel ( in the winter ) ???
Very informative
Glad you think so!
I'm having good luck with Ag. tires with chains.
Found this trying to find some replacements for my Ford 3400 on the front. The ones i got it with don't match one is like a deep three rib ag tire, the other is like shallow 5 rib hold air but are cracked so going to replace. The back ones are good shape but have the industrial tread. Hoping use around the house and move snow, etc.
I like the video... Very helpful for planning in the future. Curious, what are the options for the front tires? Are they the same? If not, maybe another video idea.😁😁
Hi Seth, same tires fit all around...I just highlighted the rears. Hope this helps!
@@GoodWorksTractors I know that this will sound a little bit crazy but does anyone make duals for the front? Or is that totally worthless idea because it will damage the front end.
Courtney, excellent tire comparison. I would not have guessed the turf tire was better in snow than the R4. I guess I will leave my turfs on for winter. I didn't see a link for the versaturf. Is it there?
Hi Jim,
Glad you enjoyed! Here's a link to the Versa Turf's from Miller Tire. www.millertire.com/products/lawn-garden-tires/26x12-00-12/26x12-00-12-carlisle-versa-turf-4-ply-radial/
Is great vid thank you
any ideas on best tires for lots of wooded acres with a long driveway to maintain in the winter and through rain in Northern Nh?
Hi, great vid. My rear axle Bridgestone PD1 tires, size 355 80 D20, are heading for exchange, soon. I contemplate to go for 365 80 R20 light truck tires as they are roughly a third the price of the PD1. I already changed for Goodyear Wrangler Adventure AT in 215 80 R15 on the front axle ( good off-road style tread pattern, similar to PD1). What do you think of my idea for the rear axle? Any recommendations on size, brand and model? My tractor is a Kubota L2850DT (4WD part-time), which I use for private proposes, only. Regards Heinz, Germany.
I've noticed a trend of some people putting R1 ag tires on the back of heavier, stiffer framed commercial zero turns due to the tendency of lawn tires to spin when the weight is shifted off them for any reason, even if they still have ground contact. Note that this is mostly for cutting yards or fields, not lawns. They simply deem the moderate damage from the R1s to be less problematic than the damage from spinning, especially considering the spinning tends to happen in the same places every time the grass is cut. However, I imagine that some of the new radial styles may end up being a better option than the ag tires to address the issue.
Yep, I had a Grasshopper last fall that had R1's on the back. Normally see them for the large commercial mowing or field mowing like you mentioned. Thanks for watching!
I have a similar tread to the HDAP’s on my grasshopper 723K...I thought it was a decent idea when I put them on...I have mixed feelings about them...they seem to spin more than the ol chevrons that were on there originally
I put ags on my last zero turn, they actually did less damage than turfs. Helped mowing my fields during the wet season. Got a big Bobcat zero turn now, has some wide turfs on it, nothing else is available except the Carlyle turf. They’ve been fine.
You are the most knowledgeable man on the earth! your also the one who sold my dad on a 1025r with loader and backhoe for landscaping rental property’s. I can’t thank you enough for that!
Haha, well far from that, but I do try to share what I know...mainly through the trials and errors I've made myself! That's very kind though, thank you. 🤣👍
I was mowing with my cub gt2544 this year, we have a lot of mud and puddles in our yard. They tend not to go away. Ive never got the machine stuck. I also try not to mow as much as i can in the super wet, cause the machine ways over 1000lbs. But it has turf tires, as soon as they got packed with mud it was over. It did manage to get itself unstuck. But these turf tires suck. Is there a better kind of tire with grip for muddy grass?
Had a Deere X748 with HDAPs on and they were Great in snow and ice with a snowblower. Upgraded to a Deere 1025R with the same size snowblower as the X748 had. NO where the traction on the 1025R as I had with the X748. And, the 1025R had loaded rear tires. Down sized to a Deere X758 with HDAPs. Back to great traction in the snow and ice. But the ride is much rougher on the X758 then I had on the X748. The X748 HDAPs were Carlisle and I know for sure the X758 HDAPs are not Carlisle. Don’t recall what brand they are. Thinking of upgrading To the Versa Turf since my X758 has the same tire size front and rear as a 1025R.
Update. The X758 has CST Turf Trax 4 ply rated. If my memory is correct, the X748 Carlisle rears were 2 ply.
One thing I've noticed is if you have a bigger tractor that has the R1tires and want to change to another style like an R4, you need to change wheels too. I have a John Deere 4520 with R1 tires. The tractors on the dealer's lot that have R4's have much wider rims and much lower profiles. Need to be aware that the cost to change tire tread designs on the 3000, and up series JD's will be pretty pricy. Apparently the sub compacts don't have that problem.
What radial tire would you recommend for an older farm tractor that is used exclusively for mowing pastures? Size: 13.6 X 28. Thank you.
The R4 is made to slip to project the equipment it will keep the tractor on the ground and will not wheel stand or break parts
Thank you!
Welcome!
Is there a guide to convert from any tractor model to R14 tires? I have a JD3043D and want to know if there are replacement R14 tires instead of my current R1 tires? Also would I have to replace the rims?
I like the AG style because I’m always in an AG area so they’re sentimental
Turf = worst on my Deere 332 for everything. Dew on the grass? Not going anywhere. Steep (paved) driveway...don't even think about plowing the snow; though chains did help a little bit.
HDAP = gets 75% of the way there. Fantastic in grass all the time without ripping it up. They're reasonably good in ice/snow provided enough ballast. Wet dirt, no good. The tread gets clogged up right away, and they turn into slicks.
My Deere 955 has R1s on the front, and R4s on the rear. Don't have anything bad to say as of yet, but haven't had the opportunity to really "dig in" and test it out. Time will tell! I really like the idea of the R14 or Versa turf though. I haven't really seen or read anything bad about them. Thanks for the great video!
Definitely a difference in two and four wheel drive machines as well. Thanks for watching!
wish had seen this video 2 days ago before orderd my new winter ag tires. got the r1 style cuz am runing threw snow extrating logs but the landing is basicly a skating rink at this point :/
Turf tires and chains for Winter. Turf for mowing. The BIG downside to turf is that they are really thin and are subject to thorn and other punctures if you go in the bush.
Some personal experience... I had a 2007 JD 4720 CUT (currently the 4066R) with R4 tires. I never had any traction problems with them in front range of Colorado (7500' elevation) snow and ice. I'm talking anywhere from a few inches of powder to 12-18+ inches of drifted wet heavy Sierra Cement. I have a video my neighbor took of me pushing deep, wet and heavy snow along his concrete driveway where you could see snow being shoved along 10+ feet out in front of the tractor's FEL. I'm guessing I had good luck with these tires simply because the tractor was much, much heavier than a sub-compact.
I couldn't make it up my own concrete driveway with the R4's on my 4066r last winter. 🤷♂️ For the record, locking rear differential DID NOT HELP! 😂👍
@@GoodWorksTractors Huh... Well, snow conditions are almost infinitely variable. One thing we do not generally get where I am in CO is icing before a storm. I could see R4s, and probably R1s, having trouble on iced up asphalt or concrete. My own driveway is asphalt and I do have a steeper than it looks section. Go figure.
I plan to purchase a JD 1025R with drive-over mid-mount mowing deck, backhoe and front loader. Will the versa turf tires be a good choice for using these three implements? I’m trying to understand if the VT tires can handle the weight/stress of using the front loader and back hoe, or if they’re best for mowing & snow removal only.
A treasure trove of info
Thanks for watching!
I need something more than turf tires because half the year, I'm always dealing with a wet lawn. My Craftsman 54" Pro series lawn tractor has 26hp which is enough power but they spin way too much. How aggressive a tread can I go without tearing up the turf?
What front tires would you recommend in combination with the
I had carlisle wt300 on my bx for years ( turf friendly R4) If you're looking at the R14's, get the Goodyear brand. They are 6 ply, the versa turf are only 4 ply. I just put on the goodyear R14's on. great traction.
Thanks for sharing and taking the time to stop by!

I run my tractor in areas with a lot of brush and thorns. Which tires do you think hold up best to that? My tractor has the R4's on it, & so far (knock on wood) no flat tires. But I would like to have a little more versatility without running the risk of getting flat tires all the time. Thanks for the help.
Good question, need a heavier ply rating....so whatever you can get your hands on!
Which do you think are better in the snow Versa Turf or HDAP?
Turf tire with chains in the winter. 👍
Can the radial tires you mention, be liquid filled? I my R4s liquid filled for weight as most of my property is hilly.
Dear Sir
we have farm tractor with tires as follow 44x18.00x20 and 31x13.5 x 15 .
we want to change for narrow size tire can we use on the same rim or we have to modified the rim wide
Can you do a back to back test of the different patterns in certain conditions, snow, dry ground, wet ground. The orange guy did one. I am not talking about our last potus when i say orange guy! I think is name his Neil.
What about the Kabota B series and the L sherries what size tires would it be better on your tractor and then the tire next to your tractor tire thank you
I suppose the right tire depends on your application(s). Not really a 1 size fits all.
Thanks!
You bet!
All good info but no big surprises. The question becomes, if my R4s are still in extremely good condition and have a lot of life left in them, is it worth spending close to the price of a grapple to replace perfectly good tires?
Great video about tires! I do have a question for you. I have a 2019 John Deere X758 with the HDAP tires on it currently. I had a X585 before that with the turf tires on it. I mow, plow and snowblow with the tractor. The only thing I don't like about the X758 compared to the X585 is that the ride seems to be way worse with the X758. I have a bad back so I really notice the difference. Do you think if I switched from the HDAP to the Carlisle radials, the ride improvement would be noticeable enough for the cost of getting the radials? You have had HDAPs and the radials on the same sized wheels, so I figured you would have an opinion on the ride quality improvement. Thanks for any advice!
Hi Russ, well I think that's going to be a bit subjective. I have never found my old x739 to be a rough ride which is nearly identical to the x758. I bring that up as I don't think I would personally see a noticeable comfort improvement on it given that I don't find it to be uncomfortable to begin with. I'd hate to see you spend your money and not see a significant change. Have you tried letting out some air pressure on your tires? Perhaps they are overfilled or filled to the max recommended pressure and lowering could help reduce some of the stiffness?
@@GoodWorksTractors Yeah, I did try the lowering of air pressure, but it really did not make any noticeable difference. I truly appreciate your honest opinion. I wish I could find someone who put the Carlisles on a X700 series tractor to see what they think. Maybe an idea for a video from you in the future??? Lol!
So I live in Maine the snow is super wet any closed tread pattern tire turns into a racing slick my agR4 tires walk all over turf tires in the winter I have a john deere 1978 140h3. I have 100lbs of wheel weights and even with I can't move with my turfs and dominate plowing with the Ags/R4s. Alot depends on the environment. Wet sticky snow I have 1000% better traction. I ran heavy equipment for 12 years and ran tractors in the vineyard I worked for a decade. Lots of exp also
I've seen Neil with Messick's, Tractor Time with Tim, and you all cover tires appropriately sized for the Deere 1 series and BX lines. The short glimpse of your 4066r with the R14s is what I'd really like to see more info on. It seems there's no dearth of opinions and comparisons for the sub-compact tractors, but I don't see much on the 3 and 4 series Deere-sized tractors. I have a 3320 cab tractor with a loader that does horribly in the snow, so I'm especially interested in what you think about the r14s on your lawn and in the snow later this year.
Perhaps you missed it, but these aren't just for subcompacts. These are for tractors in general. The R14's are basically the Versa Turfs.
@@GoodWorksTractors Nope. I didn't miss that the R14s are the larger equivalent to the Versa Turfs; I just want to see a good review of the R14s on a larger, heavier tractor along with any advice that may also come in handy. For example, after seeing this video and researching what it would take to equip my 3320 with R14s, it doesn't look like the conversion is as straight forward as the 26x12-12 tires on the 1 series (or X-series, BX, etc.). If what I'm seeing is correct, the change from the 15-19.5 NHS R4 tire on my tractor also requires a change in rims if I'm interested in going from an industrial bias ply on a 19.5" rim to a radial "metric" tire (like the R14) due to differences in the bead. Did you run into the same thing with your 4066R? Also, did you find appropriately sized front radial tires, or are they still bias ply?
Any tire shop expert will get you the equivalents. I never worry about figuring out the size as my guy down the road never steers me wrong. I didn't change rims on my 4066r, only tires. I made a complete switch to radials (fronts and backs) on both machines.
I have SUNF 20×10×8 ATV 6 ply Tires on my Craftsman T240 excellent Tires
I was wondering if on the radial tires, can you put ballast in them like rim guard that is done on the other tractor tires?
Good question. Yes, the radials on my 1025r and 4066r are both filled with liquid ballast.
Master C, tires are starting to get features as well. I just got R4 tires where they have a bead protector on them. That is nice BUT it can present problems such as if you break the bead. They are a bear to get back on the rim. Don't ask how I know this.... 😂😂😂
Hey Daniel....can I ask how you know? 🤣
@@GoodWorksTractors lol ok if you must.. After I got the tires installed I thought I was a Mr. Tire Expert that day and decided to add liquid ballast to the rears myself. Well when removing the valve stem from the first rear tire I let to much air out and the weight of the tire, being suspended off the ground, broke the bead. I tried everything to get it back on, the strap(s), the bead blaster, everything. I finally gave up and with my head hung low and went back to the tire shop. They got a good laugh out of me.
I learned I must have the liquid, pump, hose, and adapter ready to go when I remove the valve stem and attach the adaptor and hose as quickly as I can after removing the valve stem. The air burps through the submersible pump and once it slows down you fire the pump on. You repeat this of course as you add more liquid, stop the pump to let it burp and once it slows down fire it on again.
The pump can overcome quite a bit pressure in the tire and doing the above prevents losing so much air that it breaks the bead.
I still can't believe I lifted that tire and rim into my truck whenever I think about that brilliant moment in my life, lol! 😂

I have some R1 26-12-12 Carlisle True power on a narrow frame cub 122. Only thing that does is pull my yard trailers
Is the Carlisle Versaturf available in 23x10.5-12? I have a Toro 522xi.
