Corrosion is the deterioration of steel reinforcement in concrete. Corrosion often knows as rusting of metal requires presence of Oxygen (O2) and Moisture (H2O).
When it comes to corrosion of reinforcement, prevention is better the curing. There are multiple ways to prevent the corrosion of reinforcement.
    a)Epoxy coating of reinforcement
b)Keeping the moisture out by paining or plastering
c)Keeping the Ph maintained above 11
d)Keeping the chloride ions out of concrete.
What is scaling of concrete ?
Scaling is another common type of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures.
Scaling happens due to freezing and thawing cycle of the moisture (Water) inside the concrete.
How to prevent the scaling of concrete ?
There are following measures that must be taken.
1)Keep the structure away from direct exposure to water.
2)Maintain paint and plaster on the surface of concrete.
    Use air entrapped concrete.
Disintegration of concrete is a type of deterioration when concrete starts falling off from the structure itself. This is usually an advance state of deterioration resulting from other types of deterioration. There are various degrees of Disintegration of concrete
Erosion of concrete is referred to a long lasting process of deterioration of concrete surface due to abrasion and scrubbing of moving water. Erosion may sometimes happen due to moving ice too.
The best way to prevent the erosion is to provide better quality of concrete and avoid flow of polluted water.
Often aggregate used for concrete making is chemically inert in nature. But some types of aggregate, such as those which contain reactive silica, react with two alkalis contained in the cement, potassium and sodium. This process is called as Alkali Aggregate reaction.
To protect concrete from alkali aggregate reaction, the aggregate used for concrete making must be free of any impurities. Often washing the aggregate before concrete mixing may prevent alkali aggregate reaction.
When concrete comes in the contact with carbon dioxide (CO2) it forms calcium carbonate (CaCO3).This process makes surface of concrete much stronger but it reduces the overall ph of the concrete which increase the rate corrosion of reinforcement.
