    This video literally made me cry. I had to do 3 times the required amount of driving hours before finally passing my test over a year ago. I've held myself back from buying a car and I'm finally ready to start driving on my own in my own car and I've been watching your videos to psych myself up and THIS video has all the reassurance I needed to get moving. Thank you so much for making these and making them accessible to people all over the world for free. Thank you so much

      I went without a car over 13 years and I just got a car a month ago… it’s hard after taking a long break, and my anxiety grew more and more the longer I didn’t drive. I’m taking baby steps now going on short drives. It’s tough. I hope I’ll get more confident soon.

    I've been driving for almost 13 years and I've always gotten anxious when driving to new places or when bringing somebody "new" along with me.
    Lately I feel it's gotten worse due to a small accident I had.. I let the car stall in a hill start and was hit by a taxi driver from behind.
    Then covid hit, spent whole weeks without driving, and it only got worse.
    Your videos alongside some of the good stuff made by "Engineering Explained" have taught me more than I could've ever hoped for. I've always thought I'd grow old without ever truly understanding how a car works.
    Not understanding the car, I think, really did add to both my anxiety and the amount of mistakes I made so all your clear explanations and examples are, without a doubt, a fantastic help.
    Thank you so much, Richard!

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  Před 3 lety +7

      I Jason's engineering explained videos! Anxiety can come on later due to various reasons. It's difficult but possible to deal with, try to choose what you think and accept anything you're worried about. When you accept what worries you it worries you less. The issue won't change but how you feel and react to it can.

    Just what I needed! Started up driving lessons AGAIN, I'm an anxious person day to day but driving is something I've always been worried to do, I'm more worried of other peoples actions on the road which throws me off especially at traffic lights or junctions I panic if someone is behind me and I stall and stall and stall because I'm panicking I don't want to hold them up 🥺

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  Před 3 lety +8

      You have to accept you will hold them up, it's normal and your tutor should reassure you that it's normal to be slow when you're learning.

    • @lifeofbean3332
      @lifeofbean3332 Před 3 lety

      It helps to remember that people behind you will see you are a learner and they will be patient.
      It also helped me to arrenge first few lessons in the area I knew better so i didn't have to worry about what's coming after turns. If you are still anxious maybe try to check with your instructor if you can do the same? Being around a place you know as a pedestrian or cyclist could make you more confident as a driver

    • @brspea
      @brspea Před 2 lety +2

      I've stalled many times when on a slight slope because I use handbrake, and I realise that when it goes wrong the first time, I start panicking and it goes all wrong again and again until I decide to stop worrying about everyone behind me, take a deep breath and do everything at my own pace. It's very difficult driving with anxiety, but it will get better eventually, just don't give up. And yes, do accept the fact that you'll be making mistakes, you'll be stalling, but keep telling yourself you're doing well, concentrate on what you can do now and couldn't do before rather than what you can't do well yet.

  • @ArnoldsKtm
    @ArnoldsKtm Před 2 lety +7

Examiner also asked me to pull over on the right hand side of the road, which I never practiced in real life but I watched your video on it and used common sense haha, so thank you AGAIN! 😃 Once I started the test I got so much more confident, and I also tried talking to examiner because they are people and I hate awkward silences lol. Best learner driver channel by FAR, because it teaches learner drivers to drive smart, safe and cost efficient. First thing my dad told me when I started learning was if you are unsure then always slow down or stop, dont just continue driving into a dangerous situation or create one. Just make sure you look mirrors and signal too. Another thing I love about this channel is that you always try help people in the messages. Keep being awesome man! 👌

    I discovered your channel last weekend and I am so happy I did. I passed my driving license three weeks ago and bought myself a car last week. So far I went driving a couple of times with an experienced driver (hi, mom) as a passenger, but today evening I am supposed to drive for forty minutes alone for the first time ever. I know it seems silly, given it's a short trip, but I was really anxious about it this morning, I've checked the route twice on Google Maps already to get familiar with where I need to go, but watching part 1&2 of overcoming anxiety really helped me loads. I am still recovering mentally from being tooted at last week for stalling at a junction during my first actual drive, and I know I need to accept the fact that I am going to make mistakes and instead channel that energy to focus on what I'm doing. Thank you so much, I will be binge watching your content in the upcoming weeks, trying to do quick maths in my head to convert miles/h to km/h as I am outside the UK. :D

    Great, well-though-through advice. I love points no. 4 and 5. It is interesting, that with age one indeed stops caring about the embarassement, but pays more attention to one's own mortality (as well as mortalities of others. For point 6, I would also add anxiety about damaging your car (by oneself or others, especially if one has an expensive car). :D Also, "You've got to face the music" made me laugh out loud.

      Learning to feel more confident enough for my test and for being a safe enough driver as a mum of one toddler and one baby due early next year. This is my main priority that i can drive for them not just for this test. If i pass i still need to watch more cideos abd practice to be a safe wnougb driver until i can go out on my own with my daughter in the back seat. I feel okay overall about my driving skills but when i start to get anxious and stressed out about one mistake i can't continue and need to take a breather before i get back in the car and i can't be doing this all my life. His advice is great.

    My cousin (18) started her lessons late and at 12 hours (a must to complete 15 hours unless given permission by the instructor) she took her driving test and passed. I'm at 13 and I'm still scared of turning into junctions and couldn't gauge how much I should press the car pedals. I get comments from almost everyone as to why I can't drive yet and keeps on comparing me to themselves or someone younger (I'm 23). Makes me feel more anxious than I know I should.
    So I'm taking it slow even if I need to pay extra. Better safe than sorry! and your videos help me out a lot! I watch them every time I'm about to go to lessons so thank you~

    I just found this video and wow you knocked the nail on the head! I’m a generally anxious person and I’m about 10 hours into learning in an auto. On my lesson on Friday it was going really well, I had driven into the next town and back absolutely fine and I was feeling good, then at the roundabout on the way home I was looking in my left mirror for too long and curbed the car on the roundabout 🤦‍♀️😳 then I felt like crap, was apologetic to the instructor because I thought I damaged his car ( I didn’t ), I managed to join the link road back home fine after that but the negative thoughts are creeping back in. And I’m up at 3am writing this because I have a lesson at 9:15 🤦‍♀️ and I’m a ‘ mature ‘ learner at age 39

    Other Experienced Drivers on the road really don't help Learner Drivers. I've gotten my license a few months ago and have had many bad experiences with other "Experienced" Drivers. They start tailgating or even beeping at me although I'm already slightly over the speed limit. This has made me not really wanting to drive these past months, but as time passes I care less about those people.
    Just the other day I had a guy illegally overtaking me and I beeped at him (something I wouldn't do a few months ago).
    As for the patient/helpful and caring people, I thank them for making it more comfortable for Learner Drivers. The last thing a Learner Driver needs is fear of driving.

    I'm currently learning, but I can only make use of those car share car rentals. Often times the same car is not available so I have been learning in different sizes and brands. Sometimes diesel sometimes petrol. This has given my confidence a knock for sure, because it kept feeling like I just couldn't grasp it. But like you said, I was more worried about doing it perfectly than just learning. I need videos like these to help my confidence.

    I'm definitely scared of failure! I passed 2 years ago but only just recently got a car. I have had a few refresher lessons but suddenly being exclusively in control is freaking me out a bit! I tried to drive up a really steep hill and could not do it at all. Just kept stalling and rolling. (My friend had to swap with me to get us up the hill) Now I'm really scared to even attempt a slope! Most routes to my house involve traffic lights on slopes- I can't avoid it forever, but I'm just way too scared at the moment!

      The pressure of the test sounds like it may be preventing you from learning. To learn a skill you have to do things at your own pace, the pressure from deadline may be the problem. If you don't feel ready it may be worth moving your test back and giving yourself some time to learn. You may find you enjoy driving that way.

    My father is driving for almost 40 years and he expects me to drive as good as him. And if i fail to do that (which i do quite often) he gets very angry and calls me stupid. But i dont think driving has much to do with intelligence. Cause i feel like im relatively a smart person but i didnt even have 30 hours of driving experience in my life so it makes me a bad driver somehow. Anyway when i compare you to him then i know he isnt a good teacher(no surprise cause he is just a experienced driver) and i have to accept that and just ignore what he says because someday im gonna be an average driver or even better. You are a big help for protecting my confidence and have realistic expectations from myself. Thank you.

    You know even though I passed back in late 2015, I still have a little anxiety before getting in the car.
    I haven't driven on the motorway yet for fear of crashing, not finding room to move on there, taking the wrong turn etc.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  Před 3 lety +5

      Taking the wrong turn is normal, we all do it. I did it two weeks ago on the way to Donington Park. You can have confidence that when you merge into the motorway other drivers don't want a collision also, make sure you are up to speed with the flowing traffic and finding a gap should be easy. Anxiety is a difficult thing to deal with, probably the most difficult aspect of driving for some people. The key is to understand what you're anxious about, challenge it and come to terms with it. It's mostly acceptance of the dangers associated with driving, we all understand the dangers, the confident drivers accept them and understand they are very minor if you try to drive sensibly.

    Had my first driving lesson today. I'm in the US and it was around rush hour and my instructor just took me out on normal streets. It was mostly fine but there were times I was going much slower than everyone else (though I was going the speed limit, or not far below it) and in my mirrors the cars behind me looked really close. I was afraid to make eye contact with them just in case they would look annoyed or upset at me, even though the car I was in clearly was labeled student driver. Once someone went around me. No one honked at me though, so I guess it wasn't a big deal.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  Před 3 lety +2

      It's best not to make eye contact with others or think about what they may need thinking. Just concentrate on yourself and you will improve at your own pace.
