Chris is doing the right thing by moving on and not giving them his time. The way Chris handled that was admirable. He didn't escalate the situation or go along with the direction Will was trying to take things, just tried to find a way to make it funny (despite his head surely spinning from being struck) and tried to keep the show moving forward. What a professional.

Because he’s such a huge celebrity, I firmly believe he didn’t think there would be any fall out from his behavior due to his status and that people would commend his actions for ‘defending’ his wife. His career has definitely taken a blow. Part way through, he began smirking and smiling, this alone made the so called apology disingenuous.

I agree that he probably thought his behaviour was warranted based on him 'defending' his wife and there wouldn't be much blowback. I believe the smirking and smiling was discomfort, we all have "tells" when we're in uncomfortable or difficult situations (eg: smiling when you tell a lie).

I think Will was being manipulative when he said 'disappointing people is my central trauma' because it sounded like a beauty pageant that says 'my biggest flaw is that I care too much', he was trying to portray himself as the good guy and hopefully save his career. All the people who clapped and cheered that appallingly self-aggrandising speech at the Oscars are partially responsible for the firestorm that physical assault caused. They should never ever have validated his behaviour or his arrogance and lack of awareness or regret.
His ‘apology’ is scripted and acted and was just done for a purpose, and that purpose was not to apologise to Chris. It was just an attempt to repair his image and career.
Still thinking more about himself than his victim. It’s disgusting. I’ve lost all the respect I had for him. He had plenty of opportunities to repair this ‘mistake’ - in his speech, by leaving the Oscar’s after, by not partying, by asking his family not to defend him online…by appearing in any way to have regretted his actions.

Besides the three parts of an apology that you correctly state, I would also add that an apology must be delivered in a timely fashion. What do I mean by “timely?” I mean: immediate, or pretty close to immediate. Certainly, four months is NOT timely. The perpetrator needs to recognize their transgression, go to their victim in person, look them directly in the eye, take their hand in their own, and say to them: “I am sorry.” Also, a handwritten letter to their victim is appropriate. All of this must be done not only in a timely fashion, but privately as well. The victim must be able to believe as you correctly say here, that the perpetrator is sincere before they can utter these three important and necessary words: “I forgive you.”

This might be the most important point made among all the comments regarding Will's apology. To some extent he needed to make a public apology, as his transgression was made in a highly publicized situation, but as far as an apology directly towards Chris goes, that should be done in an extremely personal, private, and genuine way. I completely agree that it is Will's responsibility to handle that, sooner rather than later, regardless of how much begging or groveling it may take. To simply say that "he's here when Chris is ready", not only puts the oneness on Chris to "come and get his apology", it implies that Will doesn't find it important enough, or is not stressed enough, to do whatever it takes to personally right this wrong directly to the one person most effected by his actions. As a side note, in my never to be humble opinion, this is not a moment that should involve social media is any way, shape or form. that would only cheapen an apology, it would immediately leave room for questions as to motive. Just handle it Will, and stop worrying about what other people think!

I feel like there is one major contributing factor being ignored here - Jada. She is an abusive partner. That does not excuse the behaviour, but I believe that it does provide a better explanation and makes the action more forgivable.
Unfortunately he is so heavily under her thumb that he can never really explain his behaviour through the lens of an abuse victim, because he does not see himself as one.
I wish the public discourse would focus more on that, as I believe would be the case if we flipped all the genders.

Comedians everywhere are suffering because we've become so sensitive. Comedy is supposed to push boundaries. Imagine if George Carlin were still performing. Or Richard Pryor. Good comedy makes people uncomfortable and makes them think about issues that make them uncomfortable or maybe they don't agree with.

I believe Jada forced him to apologise, wrote the apology and coached him through it, for the sake of Will not losing his career and therefore, losing her megamillions lifestyle.
This reminded me very much of Jada at the Red Table addressing the cheating scandal. The same minimising, fake and shallow responsibility taken, and the fact that it's being publicised as a PR stunt to stop the public disapproval of their actions.
I think Jada made Will do this to take the focus off what an awful wife she is to Will. That's why she ensured he had to apologise to her aswell, to put distance between her and his actions, when we all know she is the motivating influence for that slap. She is not only unsupportive and ungrateful to Will, and has not only jeopardised his reputation in the past, but now she has finally jeopardised his career.
This apology was weak and lacked substance. I bet it was the best apology Jada was capable of, and just like all her other behaviour, it was just not good enough.
The best thing Will can do for his career is leave Jada in the past, apologise to the world and admit we were right that he was in an emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship, and move on with his life. He would get my sympathy and understanding. For as long as he continues to defend Jada, I will not support him.

It feels like a nice Bully’s Apology to me. Although I appreciate this effort and genuinely like Will Smith as an actor, I feel he is trying to move the issue to a close quicker than the victim is ready to accept. His wife is ready to be in the public eye again. Will is ready to be that cool guy again. The fact that he included her in this apology speaks volumes. He needs to apologize to each person face to face. Then come talk to the world. She was not the victim here. I believe in redemption and he has the right to speak his mind. We have the right to make him serve more than a 3 month comfy trip to find himself for assault.
I think the Smith’s are both arrogant. They are ready to say “we did our part and you all be ready for us with open arms now.” I’m not buying what they are selling. Great analysis! I really thought your POW analogy was fascinating. I've watched will over the years, and in particular the past few years noticed that he has really opened up more about his childhood and the traumas he has experienced. He said, the sense of humour he has developed was born out of necessity to protect himself from situations of physical and mental abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. This might be a reason why he was smirking after the slap of Chris. This was in essence a defense mechanism he had always used in moments of stress. Also, I thought about his theory. Maybe Will felt guilty about not being able to protect his mother and siblings from the abuse at the hands of his father. The movie he had just finished-King Richard, really centred on Richard being able to bring Venus and Serena to unheralded tennis success by protecting them in many different ways. Will spoke of the way he respected Richard for this in his acceptance speech. Is it possible, the moment Rock spoke of Jada, Will saw that look of disgust, and in a flash all his past feelings/emotions bubbled to the surface and propelled him into a quick physical response, a physical response he felt guilty and shame for his inability to protect others in the past? Bringing it back to the POW analogy. Will actually can be seen laughing in the scene just after Rock made the joke and it wasn't until he saw Jada's look that he acted. Similar to the soldier holding the gun off camera, Will felt beholden to Jada because what she thinks matters and he doesn't want to disappoint her. This combined with all those years of guilt for failing to protect his mom and siblings, he mistakenly thought physically attacking Chris could somehow win her approval (internally maybe it actually did for her) and wipe away all his past emotions of guilt and shame.

If Chris Rock doesn’t want to be in contact with Will Smith, then the apology Will Smith gave was to/for the public and not to/for Chris Rock. When I apologize to someone, I talk to them in person and in private. I don’t organize lights, camera and sound engineers and I don’t make a public announcement of it. The way I see things, any public announcement of an apology is purely a political move, or as others have labeled it, a PR move. There’s abother name for it, too, I think: it’s virtue signaling.

Did he embarrass all the people he apologized to privately?
Because the action was PUBLIC, which means the embarrassment was PUBLIC.
For the future, if you embarrass anyone publicly, just know that apologizing privately DOESN'T let you off the hook for also apologizing PUBLICLY. Your wrong needs to be admitted openly when you hurt someone openly.

    • @raindrops21_9

I get what you're saying and to a large degree this has been self-serving. I don't really think he's sorry about hitting Chris, because he still thinks he was defending his wife's 'honour' or some rubbish.
But I do think a *sincere public* apology is important and for two reasons. 1 - he actually did upset people around the world by forcing them to witness his violent behaviour and his invective-laced rant (many countries around the world didn't cut the feed as soon as the slap was delivered and we saw the whole ugly incident). 2 - he needs to set an example to those who see him as a role model.

@@raindrops21_9 You make some quite valid points here, well done. I think the only place I would add a slightly new spin is this : About him ''thinking he was defending his wife's honor'' (which I think he had even stated himself), I believe that if he was actually defending anything at all, it was most probably his ever-shrinking ''Hot Celeb'' image of himself, as well as his overall sense of masculinity & general sense of grace, which I would guess all those years spent in an apparently toxic ''entaglement'' must not have helped a great deal with.

    • @raindrops21_9

@@rigelb9025 Yes, he has absolutely been emasculated by the woman he married. But the story he's *telling himself* is that he was defending her. The reality (and I think he's having trouble facing this) is that he was trying to assert that lost sense of 'manliness' through acting out violently - and towards a physically smaller target. It's plain cowardice any way you look at it.
I don't think he's a bad guy at all, I think he's been with someone who brings out the worst in him for too damn long. I hope he gets away from her and finds himself again.
