Aretha was unique! I was at a concert she gave in Milwaukee in 1969 at the outdoor major league ballpark. Before she finished even half of her first song, the audience had crowded onto the field and surrounded her center field stage where we all stayed standing for the next two hours. Even in that huge setting, she made you feel she was singing just for you. In more than 50 years of hearing great singers in all genres [pop. jazz, classical, opera, blues, folk] only a handful of performers have had that effect on me.
