- Knight Rider is an American television series created and produced by Glen A. Larson. The series was originally broadcast on NBC from 1982 to 1986. The show stars David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a high-tech modern crime fighter assisted by KITT, an advanced artificially intelligent, self-aware and nearly indestructible car. This was the last series Larson devised at Universal Television before he moved to 20th Century Fox.
Self-made billionaire Wilton Knight rescues police Detective Lieutenant Michael Arthur Long after a near fatal shot to the face, giving him a new identity (by plastic surgery) and a new name: Michael Knight. Wilton selects Michael to be the primary field agent in the pilot program of his public justice organization, the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). The other half of this pilot program is the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), a heavily modified, technologically advanced Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with numerous features including an extremely durable shell and frame, controlled by a computer with artificial intelligence. Michael and KITT are brought in during situations where "direct action might provide the only feasible solution".
Heading FLAG is Devon Miles, who provides Michael with directives and guidance. Dr. Bonnie Barstow is the chief engineer in charge of KITT's care, as well as technical assistant to Devon (April Curtis fills this role in Season 2).
The car used as KITT in the series was a customized 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am sports model, that cost US$100,000 to build (equivalent to about $245,000 in 2014). Nose, dash and other interior of the car were designed by the design consultant Michael Scheffe.
David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight (born Michael Arthur Long), an undercover Los Angeles police detective who, while on a case in Las Vegas, is shot in the face and nearly killed. Wilton Knight, founder of Knight Industries and creator of FLAG, directs his doctors to save Long's life and reconstruct his face. With his new identity, "Michael Knight", Long is provided with high tech crime-fighting equipment, most notably the car named KITT. Hasselhoff also played Garthe Knight, Wilton Knight's estranged son and a criminal mastermind who drives Goliath, a semi tractor trailer Peterbilt 352 Pacemaker truck armed with rockets and protected by KITT's molecular bonded shell after the formula was stolen by Elizabeth Knight, Wilton's widow.
William Daniels as the voice of KITT, for Knight Industries Two Thousand, the autonomous, artificially intelligent car, with whom Michael Knight is partnered. Daniels, who simultaneously starred on St. Elsewhere, requested not to be credited for his role as KITT's voice.
Edward Mulhare as Devon Miles, the leader of FLAG, who appeared in nearly every episode to provide mission details to Knight and KITT. He was also the spokesman for FLAG whenever it came under scrutiny.
Patricia McPherson as Dr. Bonnie Barstow (Seasons 1, 3-4), KITT's chief technician and romantic tension for Michael. The character was dropped after the first season, but due to strong fan reaction and lobbying by Hasselhoff and Mulhare, she was returned for the third season and remained through the end of the series.
Rebecca Holden as April Curtis (Season 2), chief technician for KITT. The character was written out when Patricia McPherson returned. The connection between the two was never established in any installments.
Peter Parros as Reginald Cornelius III aka RC3 (Season 4), driver of the FLAG mobile unit and occasional sideman for Michael and KITT.
Richard Basehart as Wilton Knight, the creator of FLAG, who dies in the pilot episode. Basehart's voice, however, is heard throughout the series, narrating over the intro and outro.
Peter Cullen/Paul Frees as the voice of KARR (Knight Automated Roving Robot), the evil autonomous artificially intelligent car. Cullen was KARR's original voice (in Season 1's "Trust Doesn't Rust"). Frees took over the role for KARR's second appearance (Season 3's "K.I.T.T. vs. K.A.R.R."), but as he was also closely associated with Disney, he requested not to be credited for the role.

My uncle grew up watching Knight Rider and was immediately inspired to buy his own and rebuild it from the ground up. 15 years later, and about $75,000 and the car looks like and exact replica, and there's even a fully functional KITT voice box (It helps that his name is also Mike).

Sorry just not feeling that Mustang as KITT, there is one KITT and he is on the left of the screen :) That's the KITT I love and remember. KITT and Micheal Knight together forever no exceptions or remakes! Love u David Hasselhoff AKA Micheal Knight. David will always be the true Knight and KITT the 1982 Pontiac Firebird that's my KITT, not the Mustang.

im 42, i grew up with knight rider, it was my joint #1 show in the 80s along with the A team, chips, airwolf, hardcastle and mckormick, streethawk, jukes of hazzard, TJ hooker, man i loved all these shows as a kid... and i reckon fully grown blokes loved it too at he time... and the reason i know that is coz im now a fully grown bloke and i still love it. (although theyre all corny by todays standards but thats ok)
Dude am 40 now and Knight Rider, Chips, ATeam, Airwolf, Sledgehammer were my jams.

KITT will always be a Pontiac Trans Am in my heart. Not that mustang version was bad, but it wasn't 100% KITT to me. Anyways, this song still kicks ass to this day.

Watched as a kid born in 1980). Seen many great tv-shows then, Airwolf, Macgyver, Streethawk, Superforce, Hardball.... a very long list. But this show was the best...and the best possible kick-ass theme to go with it. There will always be one KITT.

K.I.T.T. 3000 should be a Firebird Turbo-Transam. Even the Rook semi-transport truck in Knight Rider needed an exotic makeover.

Whats amazing about the series and this car is that it portrayed a self driving fully computer controlled system. On this day in 2019 we now have self driving cars and computer voice actuated systems! There are those who write stories and directors who have visions of the future!. Makes you wonder if hollywood knows what the future holds for us. Hollywood gets the first look at the future as if they know what will come next in reality.!

bruh, the self driving car concept has been around since the car was first invented. the actualisation, first physical self 'parking' car was in the 70's, in concept only. ie. not put into production. Yes. there was a concept car that had a "5th wheel" at the rear in the late 1930's, 1940's i believe. It extended down and rotated via what is basically a limited rotation screw jack. It was to lift and drag the rear road wheels next to the curb. it had limitations. if you stopped the car too close to the curb, it would break trying to meet it's engineered physical potential is one example.
@@Palmit_ Thanks for the update on those self driving car concepts. Also on a side note the first electric cars did come out back in the old days I think it was in the 30's using a conventional lead acid battery. The EV car from GM in the late 90's was also designed after the lead acid battery had a range of 70 miles and the old man that designed that battery had another newer version before I believe the oil companies bough him out. Watch "who killed the electric car". You'll have to VPN over seas to see it its banned in the US. GM scrapped that project, It was individuals who built the components in their own garage and shop and GM used them and destroyed those cars. Shame on them all. By now we could have at least been driving hybrid electric car and electric cars with the new fueled mini turbine technology.
