    I know people have commented this, but it is actually necessary to shear sheep or else they will overheat or attract flies that could lay eggs which will ultimately endanger the sheep.

    Thank you for the review! I have the wool runners and the tree runners. I wore the tree runners for 3 weeks in Italy last summer and found them very comfortable for walking. They are breathable, can be worn without socks, and look great. The wool runners are also really nice, but I prefer the tree runner and am about the get a pair of the tree skippers. I think the wool runners are a bit warm, BUT I plan to wear them to Portugal in March because they're so comfortable and I can travel without socks. I can recommend both the wool runners and the tree runners!

    Thank you for your feedback. 🙂 I'm from NZ and have been contemplating buying them since they are a 🥝 brand and everyone raves about them over here. Still unsure if I will buy or not!

    I had the same experience when I tried the Tree Dashers of the ankle slipping around in the shoe but I decided to give it another go and reorder a size below because they look so stylish.

    I am wondering if they have a wide toe box because I would need that. I almost exclusively wear Merrell Ice Encore or other Merrell shoes because they have a wide toe box.

  • @texandziggy
    @texandziggy Před 5 lety +9

    Allbirds uses merino wool for their shoes. Merino sheep are a domestic wooled sheep, as opposed to a haired sheep that you would find in the wild. Haired sheep shed in the spring and do not need to be sheared. A domestic wooled sheep doesn't shed; they just keep growing more and more wool. They MUST be sheared. If not shorn, the excess wool can lead to urine scald, fly-strike, wool maggots and overheating in the summer. It's not that shearing requires the animal be kept in captivity, it's that domestic species of sheep simply wouldn't survive in the wild and domestic sheep species need to be sheared because they don't shed on their own.

    I really like the comfort of my Allbirds. The drawbacks I have found are my no show socks shift to my arch, and they attract dirt. However, one wash later they look like new.

      Yes, I love the comfort too! I haven't had that problem with my socks (I usually go sock-less) but it's great being able to wash them!

    Helpful review. I was looking at a pair for ultralight bike touring in France this summer, but if they aren't great for walking in then they won't be suitable.

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Před 6 lety

      Thank for watching, Dean. I've found them better suited for walking if I wear socks to make them a bit more snug on my feet and prevent rubbing against the wool soles and back. They seem to always advertise them as sockless shoes (especially since they are machine washable!) but I wouldn't recommend that for any type of long walks or athletic activity.
      If you are still thinking about them, you could potentially try them out and see what you think since the return policy is so generous. That being said, it looks like some of the lighter weight tree-based styles are out of stock until June, so it may not work with your cycling trip anyway depending on your schedule :/

    I was looking for advice on how to tie the tree skippers so the laces wouldn't show and found your video. Hah. I'm glad I'm not the only one who found that disappointing. I also have the same issue with the slippage in the back. Their socks are very nice and help but who wants to wear socks all the time. The tree breezers are very comfortable and don't slip at all and come in half sizes. They are just a tad too small in my usual size - 5-1/2.

    maybe you should size down if your heel are bouncing?

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Před 6 lety

      Nice! I think that is the challenge with only selling whole sizes, because I think a full size down would be too small. I have gotten more used to them though, and they have really grown on me! Thanks for watching :)

    Shearing sheep helps the sheep...

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Před 6 lety +1

      I agree that in ideal circumstances the shearing process is probably not harmful. However, I am trying to cut down on purchasing animal products in general. Shearing sheep still requires keeping sheep in captivity, often in sub-optimal conditions. Allbirds supposedly uses a high animal welfare standard for how they get their wool, but it’s hard to know the truth without seeing it myself, so I’d prefer if they had a wool-free sole option. Thanks for watching :)

      @@MissSarahEK you do know that sheep will actually die if not sheared, right?

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Před 5 lety

      Tori Pheonix I haven’t heard about that, but I will certainly look more into it. I have heard though that premature shearing can lead to death of sheep though due to cold temperatures, and wild sheep shed their wool on their own without any human intervention.

    • @BelladonnaPheonix
      @BelladonnaPheonix Před 5 lety +2

      @@MissSarahEK Look in to it. Domesticated sheep will die from overheating and disease caused by bacteria if they are not sheared. It's unrealistic to expect the domestication of sheep to stop as we have been doing it for hundreds of years. And yes, premature shearing would cause death as well but that would be something done by someone who is inexperienced in such a thing.

    Hi Sarah, just a note about the laces. You'll find on almost every shoe website (Nike, Adidas, etc.) and even in shoe stores that they use what's called "display lacing" where you can't see the ends of the laces or the bow. There's even a great website with instructions for display lacing, and many other kinds of lacing: www.fieggen.com/shoelace/lacingmethods.htm

  • @freeindependentspirit
    @freeindependentspirit Před 5 lety

    great comment about the shoe laces, I also thought they would be just slip on's and was wondering why all the other photos show laces with knots. Def will not buy the shoe now for exactly this reason, thanks for pointing this out!

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Před 4 lety

      I don't think it's the worst animal product, but I don't think it's 100% good for the animals involved. Without being in the plant, it's hard to know exactly how the sheep are treated. Here is some more information: www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-clothing/wool-industry/
