- Here's a live performance from 1965 of just the variations from Balanchine's RAYMONDA VARIATIONS. In order here are 1. Marnee Morris 2. Sara Leland 3. Andre Prokovsky 4. Melissa Hayden 5. I was honored to dance this with Violette Verdy and have this be one of the first Balanchine ballets he gave us free of charge for my 1st Los Angeles Ballet.

The freedom through arms and upper body, and the articulation through legs and feet -- just lovely to watch. This doesn't look like the State Theater stage - where was this performed?
An outdoor theater when the company was on tour to Dubrovnik around 1965 I believe. Before my time.
l saw prokovsky only in class in london late 70's making lesson for his little company he had not ideal apparence and body but technically was really strong .

How charming! The costumes and music remind me of music box ballerinas. I mean this in a good way.
Another thing I often wonder about with ballerinas from this time period, is that when on pointe, their feet in more straight up and down, almost like they aren't fully "over" on their boxes. This isn't just NYCB, but the Russians, and all dancers in older videos. Also, no one had the highly arched "banana feet" (some so much so that to me they look deformed) that so many young dancers have today. Any theories as to why this is?
They had smaller fitted more attractive pointe shoes which were changed to be more massively elongated with a bigger box...now the girls look like ducks with large paddles on their feet, I guess partly to help girls balance(??) while executing modern "technique".

I am pleased to hear and see dancers and orchestra keep proper tempo in this clip - today, Raymonda is danced with the most sluggish tempo imaginable, which sadly removes all that is 'dansante'. Balanchine certainly remembered the original choreography, as one finds bits of it quoted here and there. Nevertheless I must admit that I do not like this choreography at all.
