Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf got too little credit for giving MJ huge problems. All they remember is when AI crossed him up ( even though Sixers lost the game ). Mahmoud is one of the most uncheckable players.

Abdul Rauf was a problem then and still a problem now. Curry doesn't even have half of what he had. Can shoot off the dribble, can size up his opponent with his dribble, excellent footwork and etc. Young kids need to look at this footage to learn footwork, shooting , and how to set up yourself and teammates. Correct and it aint fair. Turning the ball over dribbling aint called any more. Wish I was allowed to to that. Used to call it palming the ball turning it over. Reaching in was over called back in the day. Its a watered down game now with the over use of the 3 point and minimal paint game. Die hard fans dont care but think about it.
The nba introduced the eorostep, basically letting everyone take as many steps as they want driving to the basket. Giannis does it all the time, literally taking probably 8 steps every time he drives to the basket.
They were barely calling it then. NBA just gave up and changed the rules on how to count the pick up step.

Anybody ever consider that they were interpreting the rule wrong back in the day? I actually don’t think Pippen traveled which is why he did did it that way. He naturally understood the two steps after the catch is what should count. But it’s no use in him arguing it if he knows that’s how it’s being called at that time. An easy way to think of it, and I hate to switch sports, but if a receiver got tackled at the same time Pippen took his “first step” it wouldn’t be considered a fumble because he didn’t bring it in. This is wheee the “gather step” understanding came into the league and they recognized it in back to the basket moves even back then. Fair is fair, post players take 4 steps on a spin move manipulating the same idea that Pippen did on this fast break. What we are seeing now is just evolution of the game and understanding of the rules not blatant cheating like some of y’all make it seem.

Wennington was money from mid-range often and has a ton of highlights that show his IQ for movement off the ball. He was traded after his best year averaging 19 + points & 6.8 assists. If nuggets would have given him green light & ran offense for him no doubt 25 to 30 points a game for his next 8 years. His best years were taken away period. Greatest freshman scoring record in college still not surpassed 30.2. Best free throw % in NBA hx but needed to shoot 1200 was 39 short. final 1 minute shot 80% (that’s as clutch as it gets) He would be taken out of game for 15 min come in the last minute & hit 3 shots in your face. And definitely having Dan Isel, who’s a big man, coaching you is completely different than having Steve Kerr. I watched almost all his games for four years in a row he wasn’t streaky, if he missed two shots in a row he would be taken out or he would be told not to shoot and he’d have to pass inside to Mutombo. Different game & era. Amazing quickness likely quickest ever shot & release. He missed cause he was pushed or hand checked. Tough to know but trajectory was same as these shot first PGs of this era.
I remember this game like it was yesterday as a teenager. I watched the bulls go down by 25/30and I watch Michael Jordan scored 28 points in the third quarter to bring them back watching it live was some of the greatest basketball I’ve seen.
Even though your CZcams name would suggest that you would possibly be another biased Jordan fan in terms of how you would edit the highlights of your video, I love how you include the highlights of MJ's opposition. It gives a more balanced and realistic perspective of Jordan's competition in his prime/Bulls era. The truth is Jordan didn't always dominate, terminate and annihilate opponents night in and night out. Guys didn't back down or cower away from MJ as much as the story is often told. Jordan was out-performed at times. He was out-duled at times. Yes he was the greatest, but he also lost battles too. Much of his greatness is in the fact that he didn't give up and he always kept coming back and competing.

In the 90s, the 3 point shot wasn’t something everyone took. It was usually only done by the best shooter on the team, like Kerr. You didn’t have everyone jacking them up at the rate of 25-30 total per game like we do now. Steph Curry takes more now than most teams did back then.

They getting beat down in the first half and almost came all the way back and would have taken the lead if not for the Pippen travel. After that travel they ran out of gas from having to work so hard to knock down the score. Crazy that I still remember this game and I was 15 years old.

I almost forget there was once a time in NBA the competence can be fierce even for regular season games, and players played for the fans, not only for their money, and never for something called "load management".
I watch games like these and it's amazing that a perimeter player like MJ was able to dominate his era - one that was still geared towards the big men and scoring/defending the paint. I hear young folks say that there weren't a lot of great perimeter players in the 90's. That's hardly the case. The game just wasn't geared for perimeter players then, the way it isn't for big men now.
I think of guys like Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Mark Price, Tyrell Brandon, Kevin Johnson, Terry Porters.....point guards who could shoot. They would flourish in today's NBA. Guys like Dell Curry, Rex Chapman, Ricky Pierce, Drazen Pterovic (rip) would be bigger stars playing today's game as well.
At the same time I look at Mutombo and he'd probably be a bench player in today's NBA.

Jordan at this point in his career wasn’t the high flyer of his youth. He still could and did dunk quite a bit but he couldn’t simply jump over everyone at this point. Dunks like he had over guys like Ewing earlier in his career, he just didn’t have that much lift anymore. Kobe did the same later in his career too, he very seldom dunked unless it was wide open.

It wasn’t a strict call (back then). It was just the rules being enforced as the game is designed to be played. Same with the moving screens that get people open today. It’s easier to let very athletic but skillfully limited players get away with calls now than to enforce skill development on the business side of basketball. You used to actually have to play like a star for a little while before you got perceived as one.

Players didn't stack up in those times and it was rare to see two superstars on one team. Fans from this generation don't understand that so that's something people will always criticize. Jordan only beat one great team in the Finals and that was against an injured and old Lakers team.

It was first time for me watching MJ guarding someone who he truly couldn't guard effectively the entire game. Chris Jackson at LSU was the best player I've ever seen. Michael Jordan was 2nd and Pete Marovich 3rd. I played against him in a camp setting and he basically averaged 5 points, 1 assist and 2 steals a minute. Lol

Rauf was the best shooter before Steph Curry came along. Keep in mind Rauf played in the 90's where defense was super tough and still scored in the mid 50's, not once but multiple times. If Steph played in the 90's he would have been sent to hospitals and filed for disability retirement because defense today was nowhere close to the 90's. Ask Jordan or Laimbeer.

I remember Illinois beating that team when they played them during the regular season and it wasn’t even a squeaker, won by double digits. Illinois was decent but not a top team by any means.

Love that Nuggets team. Abdul Rauf’s game was the pinnacle of 90s shoot-first guards, a precursor to Steph, Trey, Dame etc. Back then, shooting threes (or long twos) off the dribble seemed rare. His dribble moves and high leaping jump shot feel like throwbacks, versus the hesis, step backs and chest shots of say a Trey or Lamelo.
