Dude, no doubt that's probably how it is. I mean, for a while Blink as a whole didn't realize the drummer could help write songs. Marc and Tom just wrote songs and had Travis put some drums over it. Then they had a eureka moment and figured out that, surprise, all the members of the band could help write. So Travis probably just knows what sounds good.

I'm really happy you showed at least one Boxcar Racer song. Boxcar often gets overlooked, and has in my opinion, some of Travis' greatest and most inventive drumming. I liked Travis from Blink, but Boxcar is what made me fall in love with him.

Travis plays every song like it’s a 4 minute drum solo.
I've been a drum teacher since just about the start of Blink 182's recording career. For reasons I will never know, he was one of the most maligned and dismissed players of his day (which has lasted a very long time!). Many of the students I would teach for years in high schools would just randomly dog him, and I could never figure out why. Its funny now that much of Blink's earlier catalog is "retro" and my students today definitely dig what he does. I have always been a fan and respected the dude's chops and most of all, his creativity within the "Pop Punk" genre. A lot of good drummers from this type of music, but Travis was by far the most musical and creative in my opinion. Great stuff again from Harry!
You'll always have the stupid purists who refuse to listen to a band just because it's popular, and who'll automatically state that the musicians in it suck. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They probably secretly loved them and tried to learn how to drum like Travis and ended up realizing how ludicrous it was to make your 2 hands be in 5 places at the same time.
At the time, Barker was so heavy into brands, logos and displaying trendy images everywhere in the middle of the anti-trend punk/skate punk scene (and post-grunge, alternative, etc) that it was hard to take him seriously even though everyone knew he was a cut above. He was a walking skate shop sales rack of logos at all times ("Famous Stars and Straps" on everything including an album cover). Now that the context of the era is gone and people in general have, unfortunately, embraced establishment logos and branding, the distraction isn't there.
You have to remember, he had a VH1 reality show with his wife and was esentially all about image and brands defining you (as opposed to the previous Cobain era of anti-brands). It was a major turn-off for the more dedicated-to-integrity music fans out there. It's honestly a lot to look past. But not only has he and Blink matured since the early aughts, but it goes to show how good he really is. Everyone looks past all that now to the point that it's hard to remember why he was scoffed at unless you really take the time to consider it (or lived in that era).

I think it's three reasons: One his solos are just fast 16th notes around the kit which isn't the most entertaining thing but so many drummers tend to elevate soloing over all else even though it's an extremely small portion of drumming and he nails it when he's actually playing to a song.
The other thing is that his technique, although super entertaining, isn't necessarily very good and he's admitted to having tons of issues with pinched nerves towards the end of each tour. I WILL agree that that part of his playing can be dangerous for young drummers that don't really know what they're doing yet but try to imitate him. I do believe though that with proper training you can even achieve that strong arm movement but without tension. You just have to train specifically for it (for an example, take a look at Josh Dun's drumming from Twenty One Pilots. He achieves that same kind of arm motion but with much less tension during playing).
Third thing is just jealousy. There's a lot of nuance that goes into drumming on a professional level that newer drummers don't see and they tend to think, "I can play like that, why is HE the one that makes all the money?"

That's an interesting take on the way Travis conveys dynamics. Never thought of that!
The way the drum groove informs the choruses on Every Time I Look For You literally makes the song as good as it is for me. It’s great to see a kit have so much agency over the song instead of just languishing in the back of the mix, a slumbering metronome with occasional fills.
The guitar is literally just an octave droning over and over. It’s almost as if the two instruments have switched roles and the drumming is the lead to listen to.

Loved the vide. Alot of people give Travis crap for not being a "musical" drummer but he has a lot of finesse that gets overlooked by many. Thanks for bringing that more towards the light!
Travis is seriously one of the best punk drummers of all time. I will always admire how incredibly well he moves around the kit. I'm glad you pointed out the fact that he uses the cymbals as an extension of the kit, that's probably my favorite thing that he does. Great video as always dude!
Steven Teal You need to widen your listening Earl Hudson, DH Peligro, Lucky Lehrer, Topper Headen, Robbo, Brooks Wackerman, Byron McMackin to start. Travis is ok but he has a way to go to get into such illustrious company though. Not enough drummers listen to Earl Hudson from Bad Brains who bridged the gap between punk and jazz. My favourite DH Peligro but could also be because I met him at a gig and chatted for ages and is a top man. A good starting point for a punk drummer though as like Tre Cool they tend to keep it simple.
@@heftyalan1152 but I think Travis is probably a top 5 most influential drummer, if you ever went to warped tour, there is like 90 travis copycat out of 100 drummers there.I'm not saying those drummers are in good bands(I don't even like most of the bands that go on warped tour)but you can't deny Travis' influence on the whole scene right now.
nanasemaru 1997 This reminds me of a post on Reddit "I don't know anything about drums but I know Travis Barker keeps rhythm like no other." This translates to me as Travis Barker looks cool and Blink 182 are great therefore he must be great. For me this is drummer judged on personality factor so how can his drumming live up to that as he has a massive personality. For me like Tommy Lee he is a showman. I used to play in a band which covered All the small things and Basket Case. Fun songs to play but nothing that will make anyone go wow. I try not to be rude about other drummers but I will be honest. Travis Barker is good at what he does. Is he overrated. Yes if you compare him to Jo Jo Meyer no if you compare him to others' but he is out there doing it influencing others' and that deserves respect but I would be pointing a new drummer towards AJ Pero (RIP) before Travis Barker or Matt Cameron ex Soundgarden. For me there are others' I would listen to first but if he influences people then good. If a punk wanted my recommendation on a punk drummer it would be Brooks Wackerman. I saw him live with Bad Religion and absolutely blew me away. Seriously unbelievable drummer and he would just throw in these Tony Williams style jazz ride patterns as outros for a few bars and then full power single bass drum for the very fast F*ck Armageddon This is Hell.
@@heftyalan1152 I agree, he is not that skilled like the others but we also can't deny that he is one of the most influential ones as many of the youtuber/drummer community cited him as their biggest influence. And I would also recommend Ilan Rubin(AVA and NIN)I saw him with paramore back in 2013 and it was glorious.

We agree Ilan Rubin is excellent and the drummer who should be the number 1 but that is the problem if you are not a player how do you distinguish?

Thank you for making this video! I can’t even begins to explain how much travis (and blink) inspired me. He was the reason I learned to play drums. And 14 years later I’m still replaying songs over and over to try and learn how to play like him. I also love when one of you videos pops up, love seeing how much drumming means to you because it’s inspires me to keep learning. Can’t wait to see more!

I seem to have the "no dude, Travis is actually very technical and a phenomenal musician" conversation with guys who think he's only good for playing loud a lot. This leads to me pulling up numerous CZcams videos of Travis displaying his marching chops or soloing in order to show how good he really is, because he's one of my favorites.

Travis would even agree with you there but he seems to hit the drums harder and faster than any other drummer I know, and the guy plays with pure physical force and passion. I've been playing for 14 years and STILL cannot touch the guys drum tracks. One of my all time top drumming heroes
I love pop punk. Blink 182 will always be a part of my life. Just like he said, they were my first everything in music. I personally think people jump on the bandwagon of hate because majority don’t want to associate a pop punk band with anyone great. They see pop or punk in the label and immediately write it off. Those people are more quick to choose heavy metal or alternative drummers as one of the greats, but Travis is highly underrated! Guy kills so much and last I checked, haven’t seen many that can carry a drum solo while suspended upside down, constantly spinning, with flames about. Just sayin’! 😂
