@@PORIO171 There are lots of violinists and soloists in conventional orchestra jobs, but there is only one Twoset. Pretty apparent to me which one is irreplaceable.
I'm fairly confident that their work has inspired many more young people to become musicians, so not only are they replaceable, give it time and they're quite literally replacing themselves.

Dudes - I’m a professional scientist (for now… times are tough…), and the tension between scientists and university/institute admin is the worst. Exactly the same as you described.
I'm an artist/animator in art college but I feel the same way too. It feels like college students in general, regardless of what field you are in, are realising how 'useless' or toxic the admin and some of the lecturers treat towards students lately.

Yes! Many people start to listen to classical music after watching TSV's videos like me! I felt classical music quite boring actually before but things has changed after i listened to Eddy's and then Hilary Hahn's Sebelius violin concerto. Now it is one of my fav pieces.

I was the conductor of a youth orchestra a while ago, and I remember the feeling when I was an orchestral musician that all orchestras were playing the same repertoire over and over again, so I chosen to diverge from that and begun to search for music that was on the same level of my child's abilities, and they loved it, I still teached them the standard repertoire, but always tried to bring new music for them. I invited a few musicians from other orchestras to play solos with them and encourage them to study so they can play solos too. Another thing I always tried to do, was made them choose part of the repertoire, if they wanted to play a certain composition, I gave it a thought and made them work hard with the main repertoire, and if they progress well I would include the one they had chosen. Thankfully I had good team in the admin department and always accepted my recommendations.
Of course really young people are not tired of the repertoire yet and perfectly happy to play the mainstream stuff
A while back, I REALLY wanted to become a professional orchestral musician. I joined a youth orchestra and realized how much it sucked, so now I'm going into engineering :) Much happier now, but maybe you are able to give some kids a better experience

Yep, not only are they much happier with what they do in TwoSet that they would have ever been in the "regular" classical industry, but they've done much more for this genre than they would have been able to do as orchestral violinists.
They're actually motivating the next generation of musicians and may be one of the reasons we'll still be able to enjoy classical music in the future despite all the challenges it faces. I really hope they realize that.

I'm a medical doctor in a hospital, and the same goes for us, such a disconnect between medics and admins, they just want you to become a healing machine and there is less and less humanity in what we do, although taking good care of people is what motivated me to do this job in the first place
That's why I'm quitting, opening my own cabinet so that I can take the time to exchange with my patients and understand better their needs

I've sadly have seen very bad medics who just mechanically give instructions to their patients about what to do without even having a friendly conversation with their patients. Its kind of sad. We need more independent workers from the big industries as to make the interaction between people more human and natural.

Over the years, I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of similar comments under TwoSet videos. I really hope Brett and Eddy read them and are aware of the impact their content has. Even what they consider "stupid" may be one of the most important part of what they do, because it shows how fun it can be to play an instrument.
i really feel the same so i totally understand, I got more knowledge about music than before (about famous musicians and of course, pieces and their social/musical effects that I didn't know of)
This is definitely why I'm not a CZcamsr as an opera singer. I know that if I put myself out there doing this, even if it doesn't inhibit my ability to do my job at all, it's going to blacklist me from a lot of them because of how the higher ups in the classical music world view this sort of thing. Unfortunately, being in the classical music world means living a very sort of strict lifestyle. It isn't really that the musicians are like that, but the patrons (who tend to be wealthy conservatives) expect it, so if there's any sign that you'll be problematic to their image and getting that funding from patrons, they just bar you entirely. I think that you guys made a wise decision to choose TwoSet over a classical music career because by doing this, you're actually opening the door for a lot more young people to be classical musicians, even at the cost of your own careers. I think that maybe things will change in the future and you guys could come back to it, but if you had to make the decision (which, I think most classical musicians understand completely), I think that you guys made the right one. Who knows, perhaps you could even put together your own CZcamsr orchestra.
I’m sorry to hear all of this, but I’d strongly suggest you look up Maggie Renee. She’s a Juliard trained opera student who has been making quite a platform for herself on CZcams the past year or so.
I agree with most of your comment, but a CZcamsr orchestra? They wouldn't get through one rehearsal without a bunch of drama videos on how their rivals rigged the seating auditions.

Hey Brett and Eddy! Last year I was in a terrible accident and I got hit by a car, the doctors said I was going to die and they told my family to bring in people to say goodbye to me, but then the next day everything changed. One of the nurses told my mum to get some rest because I would wake up soon!! When I was up and off the dr*gs, I started playing piano/guitar/ukulele again. I was due for my grade 2 piano AMEB exam (I skipped grade 1 hehe), but I missed it because of the accident. After I got back into Playing piano, I’d found out that I had forgotten most of my pieces! I was ready to give up music completely, until I saw one of your guys videos pop up. I watched it and seeing you inspired me to keep trying to relearn my pieces, and eventually I did. So I just wanted to let you know that you both are a big inspiration to me, and I’d love to meet you guys in the future. 15th of July is the anniversary of my accident, I’ve nearly been alive for one year!!

Somehow there’s a lot of people who don’t really know this but the pair of them were actually fired from their jobs. There’s more to their stories than they’re actually telling people about. It’s just a matter of time the orchestra management comes forward to dismiss any of their claims they have said to be “true”
I worked in the admin office for my city’s symphony(they never called it an orchestra and anytime someone called it an orchestra they were called out and sometimes humiliated)and the disconnect between admin and the musicians is unfortunately very real. I don’t fit in anywhere so I would roam the halls on my lunch break(I don’t like eating meals at work) so I ran into the musicians a good deal. They were surprised and a bit standoff-ish at first but it turns out the VP of Marketing has called them “just musicians” on more than one occasion and they found that lots of people in the administration treated them that way. Since I was admin they thought I had the same mindset.
I quickly squashed that and said that I wish I could do half of what they do. I quickly showed through my actions that I had nothing but respect for them and they warmed up to me. When I left the company I said in my exit interview that I hope that we all can agree that we are all just trying to promote and educate a love of music and that the division, bickering and just plain nastiness needed to end.

I'm a classical musician, but was never in a professional orchestra. So I'm really curious. Why would you get called out it humiliated for calling it an "orchestra"? Also, who are these administrators? Why would they call them "just musicians"? Are they just business people with no connection to music? Why does it get nasty? I've heard some other musicans say similar things.
@@donnaknudson7296 I'm by no means a classical musician, but I'm familiar with other situations where the semantics of terminology are huge for people. I would think that similarly to a professor insisting on being called "Dr." or "Professor" as their title, administrative staff of a _symphony_ would want it to be called as such, since "orchestra" in their minds might imply a degree of amateurity.

Symphony is a type of piece, or it’s an adjective for orchestra, a type of orchestral group. I hear a lot of people who don’t know anything about music always wanting to call every classical music piece a symphony as well, you were right to detect this as suspicious, if that’s what you did feel. It’s non music knowledgeable people who are falsely snobby about that.

TwoSetViolin is certainly worth leaving because it managed to do something I thought of as impossible before - promoting classical music as cool and accessible for everyone. I always liked classical music but I felt quite lost, as if I am some alien from planet X playing obscure classic guitar and mostly I do not bother to even mention it. Now thanks to this channel I discovered that there is a whole community of similarly orientated people and I just love that classic music is still alive and thriving. Huge everyday inspiration. At the beginning of TwoSet, everyone tried to discourage them. Their parents, their teachers, even some of their friends said they were out of their mind when they saw them spend hours making videos instead of focusing on their career, then quit a secure job to become CZcamsrs, then decide to put together a show and tour the world despite having no money or experience at all.
But as Brett said in one of his podcasts, "life is too short to give a damn about what other people think of you". Many people say that, but few actually live according to this principle and have the courage to go against the grain. Like you, I'm happy Brett and Eddy didn't let anyone prevent them from doing what they really wanted to do.

When you mentioned many professional orchestra members treating it like a 9-5 job and becoming a bit mechanical, it reminded me of a few different concerts I've been to, and how completely DIFFERENT the energy from them was based not on the music they were playing, but the audience they were playing for. When I went to just some typical symphony performances where they played what I considered standard fare like William Tell and such, and the audience was full of adults who enjoy the symphony, corporate people, and maybe a class field trip, the orchestra members acted basically exactly like you said. They were GOOD, and they played WELL, but the energy was very.... "this is my job." However, when I went to the Kingdom Hearts World Tour concert, even though it included many of the very same musicians (it wasn't a tour with a traveling orchestra, and used local orchestras instead) you could literally see how much fun everyone was having. The audience was excited and had zero clue about any kind of concert etiquette, and both the players and the conductor were responding to that. The person who arranged that particular iteration of the show must've been a fan, because they even included two songs that weren't part of the official itinerary, one of which they arranged from the most recent Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer at the time. It was such a completely different experience that it put the other concerts I've been to in stark contrast and made me think that maybe... maybe orchestras and symphonies need to relax a little? Maybe find a way for some more audience engagement if it's possible. It's so much easier to love what you're playing, even if you might personally be a bit bored of it, if people are really enjoying it.
I think big city orchestras should have evenings where they teach a little bit about the history of the piece or a little bit about the composer. And then play the piece I think that would be more interesting for the audience. And I like the old repertoire but it’s got I have new stuff interfaced
Listening to this made me realize that most specialized forms of work/art suffer from the same issue: Administrations. As a nurse, this really hit home to me. How different is nursing from music? And yet how similar that problem. The coworkers who treat their career as a 9 to 5 job when there is actually an art to doing it properly? I am sure others out there in the working world can appreciate this. Is the whole planet suffering from some sort of burnout? How do we remedy this?
Oh wow, I can relate to this so much. Been a nurse for 22 years and when the management is bad, it just sucks all the joy out of coming to work, and the art is lost. And the patients can see it and feel it too. Sadly, I've watched this issue become worse and more widespread over the years and now if often feels like there are very very few nurses left out there who do the work because it brings them joy to perform their art. The vast majority are just mechanically going through the motions so they can hurry up and get to their next paycheck.
Middle management is a cancer. I can't wait for when universal basic income makes it so we don't need jobs of people making money for the sake of making money, then the people who are employed are the ones who are really doing something useful, some research some art etc
As a teacherm I felt extreme empathy to the admin problem as well. If admin could be run more by those who actually lived through the real life experience of providing that service, and if more people actually did their jobs with more passion and care (and were appreciated for it), imagine how different of a world we could live in.
that’s true, i am very passionate in my job but it made me the odd one out as most people are just there to get the salary regardless of the impact they made in the patients lives. it’s just sad because I understood why they are the way they are. It’s just a matter of time, if I make significant changes to my job or my job will change me.

About the admin thing : I played several years ago within a marching band (100% amateur, a lot of students) used by Joe Hisaishi during his tour in Paris, it was for a kind of a mid-break for the main orchestra. Everyone wanted to have a picture with him but we were told by the admin, at the day1, that he didn't want to, too busy. At the last rehearsal, an assistant came to us asking : "Usually people want to speak to him and get pictures, why didn't you ask for a meeting ?"... well...

Honestly, i think that would be a cool concept. Take parts from sections and give them to other sections that are in the same key. Flutes and oboes switch parts, violins and violas switch, maybe bass and cello switch, brass switch amongst themselves. I think it would be really interesting to do a side-by-side comparison between what the original sounds like, and then have everyone switch. You'd probably hear lots of tone colors that you don't normally hear. It would even be a really interesting mental challenge for the conductor because he/she would have to make sure that the proper sections are getting ques and the score wouldn't be "right" to go by for sections.

Spot on. Been playing professionally for over 40 years. Yes, admin does their own thing. Playing the same pieces over and over and over and over again. Uninspired repertoire is the killer!! When you get next season's repertoire and you see maybe 1 piece that inspires you and all of the rest is either stuff you've played a 100 times or it's just crappy stuff. When that happens, your soul is sucked right out of you.
It's so important to tell students that there is so much more to violin than orchestra. Not every violinist is meant to play in orchestra, and that's okay. There's a lot of other things you can do, like play in small ensembles with people you actually enjoy playing with.
A million years ago the Australian youth orchestra came to my school in Michigan USA. They were so good! They really blew our doors off! At the same time the folks in the orchestra were absolutely the nicest bunch I ever met. I remember the one thing they were having problems with was they said all our paper money was the same color! It was a privilege to meet them and hear their concert. It would have been about 1977 or so, I can't place it exactly.

This sounds similar to animation. With animators, directors and producers. There needs to be transparency and clear communication between these roles in order for the whole team to work harmoniously. If there isn’t, tension arises. Also we have workers that are green vs older jaded people. It’s common for any job really.
These kind of videos makes all of us realize how far these two dudes have come ... From making hilarious videos to roasting fake depiction of classical music to playing with great soloists and conductors to discussing about serious topics ... They have now 3+ million subscribers from a couple of them .... I hope you guys will have a long and prosperous career for the rest of your lives.

I love it when Brett talking about music and playing the violin, his eyes suddenly lit up.
I've been singing in the Bach in Baltimore Bach Choir, for 6 years and we are starting to go in the direction of finding a way to make ourselves better and unique as an organization. We did the Bach B Minor Mass in February, Mendelssohn's Elijah in March and we're about to do the Brahms Requiem in April, and the whole choir has been getting so much better. We would usually just perform one larger work per season and do mostly Bach Cantatas, but this season we were challenged and for the most part everyone has stepped up to the challenge and our sound is getting better with each concert.
Happy that you chose to focus on TwoSet! And looking at where we are now, I believe that TwoSet has provided, and is still providing, something unique to the classical community: sharing and spreading the love of classical music to both musicians and non-musicians. Kudos to both of you!

Great to see two young Australian musicians undergoing a musical transformation by exchanging performing for online music education. Desperately needed and compelling. My parents devoted their lives to music education in Australia. Nice to see it bear fruit in this amazing way!
Admin tried to stifle their decision to make classical music more available to the world, and now they they travel the world because they have a worldwide fanbase, and they regularly meet with Hilary Hahn, Ray Chen, and many other world-renowned soloists. That's a power move haha.
The sad thing is that admin want to maintain classical music as some elitist, restrictive institution, which is ultimately destroying them. By restricting access to the classical music world, it is quickly losing popularity and on the verge of disappearing. Thanks to TwoSet, classical music is finally gaining a larger and younger fanbase, which is exactly what it needs to survive into the future.

I completely agree with this. I go to the symphony fairly often (not often enough for my liking, but a teacher salary only goes so far), and I notice that almost everyone in the audience is much older than I am (42). There are so very few young people attending these shows and it sucks because I love classical music! I want to be able to continue to see live orchestra performances for the next few decades of my life, but the interest just isn't there for younger people. Brett and Eddy are inspiring younger people all over the world and I think that is so critical for the survival of classical music as a genre. It sucks that they had to leave the orchestra to find their niche, but I think the music world should be extremely grateful to them for it.
I feel like you guys are the punk movement of the classical world: disruptive but desperately needed and quite necessary, which is why so many musicians want to work with you. The classical music world is suffocating in the admin crap. (I keep thinking of the river spirit in Spirited Away completely clogged with bikes and trash and who was so happy to puke out all of it.)
I agree with you. The fact that, over the years, every single one of the musicians they've asked to collab with said yes speaks volume. I think that most people in the classical world are aware that some things have to change in this industry and really appreciate TwoSet's efforts to find a different approach to this genre.
Sure, some people think they're just cringy clowns. And of course Brett and Eddy aren't perfect, they make mistakes like everybody else. But at least they try. And whether you like them or not, the reality is that they're currently influencing the next generation of musicians and may be one of the reasons we'll still be able to enjoy classical music in the future.

NYC freelance violinist here. Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts on orchestra life. It really resonates. The 2 rehearsals and concert format is not enough for an 80+ piece orchestra to bring to life the greatness of our favorite compositions. It can be fun to quickly learn some new repertoire, but it will never be truly satisfying. A colleague just told me the other day that she was hired to play a Mahler 5 that was put together in 3 days. It’s a shame.
Personally, I think that for at least second rate orchestras, there should be more rehearsals and fewer concerts. Also, for better-established groups, more chamber music concert series. That way the players will have to stay in shape!!
Former pro opera singer here. I used to sing professionally for Pacific Symphony Chorus before pursuing my own musical projects, and the dynamic was the same. We wouldn't even get to choose which concerts we got to sing in during the season because admin wanted familiar faces at the concerts donors would be attending.
Also, creating a TwoSet orchestra, or "The TwoSet Philharmonic" should definitely be a thing. Sortof like Orchestra B from Nodame Cantabile for all my fellow weebs out there. *fist bump*

I never listened to classical music until I saw two set a few years ago. Now at 73 I listen to something everyday. I also fell in love with Janine Jansen and Hillary Hahn. I was surprised that there is so much on CZcams. I quickly ran across a documentary on Janine Jansen recording Beethoven’s op 61 I saw her listening to the beginning of the piece before the her first part starts and to see her really feel the music just grabbed me. She is just wonderful to watch as well as listen to. She is stunning yes but so expressive. When she plays Chamber Music you can see her commutating with the other musicians with those beautiful eyes like doing some conducting which she most likely is. Thanks to you guys for the gift music.
I feel like another thing they could’ve mentioned is the competition. I feel like a lot of orchestras aren’t getting a lot of funding so actually getting the job and being able to put food of the table and a roof over your head becomes a lot harder.

You are very creative people, the type of people who likes to innovate and make your own decisions. Also, you guys seem to really enjoy learning new things and promoting music to a wide audience. It's very understandable why you would gravitate towards a medium in which you guys are entrepreneurs as much as entertainers. It may be more risky, less stable, I suppose, but it's also more free and full of possibilities.

having worked in public research in France, I can tell you that we always had the same problem. I think it's pretty universal.
@gloria this is a widespread issue with organisations, as far as I can tell. E.g. it seems to be common for software developers to be the subject of a terrible one-sided decisions by management about the projects they're working on, including (but not limited to):
- Not allowing time to improve infrastructure that actively makes it difficult for developers to develop new features
- Deadlines that are entirely unrealistic - e.g. providing 3 months to complete something that the developers know will take a year.
- Insisting certain technologies are used, which have no impact on the end-user but make the development cycle harder
Not sure what drives it, but I think in part there's an expectation that people in certain roles have to make certain decisions, even if they don't have any of the information required to make a good decision - then add that people who take advice from other people don't "achieve things on their own merit" so it's harder for them to take the credit?
That's my guess anyway.

Getting 3 mil people to be keen into classical/orquestal music is not a small feat. I also believe you have inspired a lot of people to pick up the violin (including me, I've played the guitar for over 20 years and basss for long time too, and I just picked up the violin as my 3rd instrument.
Feeding off of your suggestion for first and second violins swapping parts, my youth orchestra actually does that! It makes things much more fun imo because I don't have to play all super hard parts, but like one time when I played second for St. Pauls Suite, I won't have to deal with the second movement all the time. If you know you know.

This isn't meant as shade for the guys at all, but you could swap out "musician" with pretty much any other job in a large organization. Any time your organization becomes large enough to have more than one manager, all the things they complain about start happening. Good for them for finding something they love to do and can live off of it.

Speaking of switching instruments, we did that a lot in the school Chinese orchestra, my primary instrument is Pipa but I also knew how to play erhu, percussion (I actually had to perform once on percussion because that person was sick, it was the most nerve-wracking experience), Yangqin and Ruan. It actually helps us to understand and appreciate other parts better too. Switching instruments will be much more difficult for professional musicians, but some sort of "knowledge exchanges" among different instruments may make musicians life more interesting?

May I mention one thing? the Vienna Philharmonic... they run their own management, full and final. They are not told what to do by managers... and more.. they choose who will conduct them, period.
One event occurred many years ago when the VPO were in rehearsal with a famous conductor who was trying to get them to play in another way.... the leader said to the conductor...."I am very sorry, but we don't do that here" And that was that! they are so powerful they can actually say this to a conductor.

I'm an orchestra old-timer (Wow, can't believe I'm saying that! Time flies!) and I love what you guys are doing. You made so many great points in this video! Yes, things aren't perfect and I wish I could change many things....but honestly, for me, I'm thrilled to be playing orchestral music for my career. I was laughing hilariously at the Harry Potter comment (agree, nothing against Harry!) but I wish that somehow people would come to our weekly concerts with as much enthusiasm. Perhaps your channel can help with this? In any case, I love what you are doing, your energy, your fun, and your pursuit of excellence. I wish that orchestras could incorporate some of your outstanding ideas to help bring this amazing art form to the next generation. Maybe you are doing it without them -- that is great! But I've seen some young musicians come into our orchestra with big ideas and I want to see that encouraged!!! Thank you - you guys are adorable. :)

I feel that leaving orchestra was not only brave, but essential for your development. You’re not destined to be the two greatest soloists in the world or mainstays at a national orchestra. The both of you are at the start of something much larger and more rewarding. What you do with TwoSet will grow. In time it will evolve. No one knows what it/you will be, but it will reach and inspire people more deeply than you ever could following a conductor. Keep loving music and follow your creativity!

Now all of my friends are surprised that I listen to concertos and symphonies which are more than 40 minutes. Had not been for their videos I would've never done that. They've opened up a new world for me.

I miss the orchestral experience I had from high school. There was interest in joining the symphony but the audition process was really intense and I was told by many people that the repertoire wasn't nearly as challenging as the auditions. I was lucky enough to work in my local music store and was able to meet wonderful people and I got an apprenticeship in the orchestra repair shop. It was amazing and I miss that as well. Being able to learn how to fix and build musical instruments with my hands and get paid for it was a dream come true!
I could not praise this enough. Brilliant. The marketing team for your orchestra are idiotic clowns not to see what a unique and fabulous gift you brought them.
And your reflections on orchestral life and the concert churn vs. Working towards a better long term output ... were spot on.

Re innovative programming one of the most interesting series I remember was a season of concerts that commissioned new composers to write fanfares, one per program. There were a variety of styles and sounded represented in that format. I imagine that was interesting for the musicians as well.
What I love about your videos is that refueled my love for music and made me want to continue learning the piano and music theory. When I was nine and starting the Ling Ling road, I had a wonderful teacher who made me love music and beautiful piano hands (I'm making it a thing). He got replaced by another teacher who already had a prodigy in her class (she had been there for 3 years, and it was my first year), and me & an older lady got thrown into the fray. She could not spend enough time with all of us (what was that 30-45 minutes divided in 3??) and we had an end of the year concert and I had to play in front of 2 MIB agents who were seriously analyzing my skills and nerves got the best of me. They were listening to us to see to whom to dedicate the trophy pre-concert. Comes concert day, I sneak a peek under the black drape and see the prodigy's name on the trophy. I played amazingly. But they killed my passion for learning the piano since.
You guys made me want to go back to it. I even picked up books on music theory. One day, I'd like to write a few personal pieces.

Of all of the new Two set formats of videos, this is by far the best, perhaps not the funniest, or creative, but by far the best, they inform, give points of view, funny stories or testimonials, I think that it belongs to the idea of Two set.
6:40 This isn't a perfect 1:1 comparison because I don't expect every member of an orchestra to *compose*, but you can see this with visual media artists who have a 40 hr/week job. A lot of times they lose the drive and motivation to draw anything outside of work. Sometimes it's artist block. Sometimes it's a lack of motivation. Artists just end up clocking in for their job, where they do good work, btw, but it doesn't translate to inspiration outside of work.
I guess the concert equivalent is that after you are doing practicing the prepared pieces for the upcoming concert, do you sit down and play something completely unrelated, but is something you love? Say you are practicing 3rd chair violin (oof) and now you're done. Do you feel like working on your piano skills and brush up on some Chopin? Or do you just want to relax and veg out?
This is why I hate it when people tell me to make my passion my job. That's the #1 best way to destroy my passion and replace it with a soul crushing obligation. Not everybody working their passion has lost that passion, but tying it to work can't help.
I look at my job as a means to an end. I do enjoy my job (otherwise I'd quit) but I'm not passionate about it. I'm passionate about stuff that I do outside of work. Never the two shall meet.

I always find you guys entertaining, but I particularly enjoyed your straight forward delivery in this episode. I also loved your auditioning for Curtis Institute. and the extraordinary lessons that the adjudicators gave you after your auditions. In the 1920s my mother entered Curtis's second class as a violinist and proceeded to become a violist. While I was impatiently waiting to be born in 1940, she frequently serenaded me with the Prelude to Bach's 1st cello suite.
Honestly I can relate to do. It was why I made the decision to stop pursuing music professionally and just keep it as a serious hobby. The daily grind was starting to make it feel like it was work and I was burning out. It scared me cuz I was starting to lose my love of music a little. But now I’m ok. I love the creative and performing aspecting. But oof the actual business, admin side wears me out

Even though they left their orchestra, you can’t tell. They are still really talented at the violin, and are still able to make enjoyable and laughable content. Have just seen this : I think the main reason particularly for string players is that there is no chance to "shine". You're just one of the massive group and following direction gets tedious if you're more of a soloist. The other thing you can find boring is waiting for those less capable to catch up, or wake up, and you're absolutely right, beaurocracy is soul destroying.
I was lucky enough to hear the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra once. They have no conductor, and the first chair violinist changes from piece to piece. I was bowled over by the passion, the Aliveness, of their performance. It really knocked my socks off.
So something like that might be a good model for what you’re talking about.
Also, I reeeeally think you should check out recordings by Corky Siegel and his Traveling Chamber Blues Orchestra (if I’m getting the name exactly right). They have collaborated with Seiji Ozawa and other classical groups, and they are a fantastically creative group. I think you’d love it.
There are ways to make music while being both creative and free.
