    So i've had my bird for about a year now. I keep his door open all day for him to go in and out, but he never lets me pick him up from inside the cage. he doesn't follow millet or any other treats, if I try to encourage (not force), him out or onto my hand, he bites. he used to be grabbed to be taken out in his previous home and I believe that's a huge part of the issue. I can kiss him and pet him at anytime though, he doesn't mind. however, if he's already out of his cage (which he only does by himself a few times a week, if that) he will happily step up with no issues. I have tried training him to step up onto perches, but once he figured out what I was doing, he stopped. I know that birds need outside time for at least an hour a day, but I don't know how I can give him that if he's not willing to come out of the cage. I still keep the door open at all times, and a perch next to it on the outside, but he still only comes out maybe a few times a week. Sometimes he won't even come out for a few weeks.

      My bird was doing the same thing! What I did was training him to step up, by placing my finger (or stick) next to his stomach. After a month of doing that,- the trust started to come. Now I take him out of the cage every day

    My bird will eat the millet spray, but she won't follow it. I keep the cage door open every time I read a children's book to her, which she LOVES when I do! She isn't hand tamed so she doesn't completely trust me yet. It she's now used to me putting my hand in her cage for a long wile slowly getting close to her. Once in a when she'll run from my hand but others she'll ignore it. She won't let me pet her yet though.

    Both my cockatiels loved to come out & spend time with me. All of a sudden the male stopped coming out. The female has been coming out until recently. All of a sudden, she refused to come out as well. I need to take them to the vets tomorrow afternoon, to have their nail clipped. The female needs care, she may have an infection. I finally found a vet who does birds close enough. They tell me to use a blanket or something to cover them, but I'm afraid of causing a heart attack. I am also going through a major trauma & I shake, so this would be no easy task.

    I bought baby cockatiels - if I didn't grab them gently (they were not hand raised as told) they would starve as both were not onto seed. I don't want them to be scared of my hand but to help them live I have to grab them so I can feed them as they are both too young to have seed, but too old to hand raise myself like I've done before. Any advice?

    • @laurenkelly30
      @laurenkelly30 Před 7 lety +2

      No, it's completely painless as long as it's done right. I would only recommend clipping wings if you are currently taming them and you are having a hard time, or else if they often knock into windows or walls.

      My cockatiel was exactly like that...just give him some personal space and he will come to you sooner or later...don't cut his wings...they are his pride and confidence and don't force him to do anything he wouldn't like at first

    • @zacket-fj8yr
      @zacket-fj8yr Před 6 lety

      Put all wires where he can't get them and stop him from getting into small spaces like under bed, between dressers, etc, then let him out of the cage.

      osomatsuuu wear gloves if he bites and push your index finger lightly on his abdomen and push in with little force and say "step up" or some command like that and repeat till he does it without having to push his stomache

      A cockatiel will soon get bored and go back inside its cage. Try moving the cage towards it with all doors open, and place a treat inside. It will hop in and close up the doors.
