The glitter hairspray just sent me back to my childhood. The particular smell. The entire girl's bathroom in my gym covered in glitter. The mirrors, the sinks, the toilet seats. The early 2000's were wild.

@@willn.7181 In fact, Onodi’s first vault was slightly harder than Milosevic’s second. It technically didnt matter given everyone had 10 start values but I agree I’d have given the edge to Onodi on this.
it’s crazy to see that there was no cushioning for landings on vault, that’s insane.
Cheng Fei was the best vaulter of her quad, it hurts that she isn’t on here

I have to say, Rosu’s Amanar in 2004 could easily hold up to today’s competition standards. That was CLEAN

Not seeing Maroney on this list is still weird to me...
In 2012 she lost in front of Sandra Izbasa from 🇷🇴
And Cheng Fei, and Shushunova. All 3 were by far the dominant vaulters of their quad and lost. Mary Lou Retton not winning vault when it was her vault that won her the All Around is also strange.
I’m still dealing with that trauma.

Sandra should’ve gotten a 14.900 for that vault. Had she gotten below 15.000 she would’ve lost to Maroney. They actually took .3 off Maroney score she actually scored 16.066 not including the deduction for stepping out of bounds. Check Wikipedia it will tell you
It’s weird to see how slow all of them look compared to Simone’s first vault🤣🤧 it’s like we went from dainty elegance with one and half turns and then simone’s first vault is like that’s cute imma fly to Mars right quick 😭😭😭

I've watched gymnastics but I don't know what they're doing, what is it that Simone does that's more difficult than the others?
@@L.Spencer she has better form in the air (legs together, straight, and toes pointed), and she does more twisting than others, she does a 2.5 twist where most people do 2, and a half on and 1.5 off which most people cant even do period. I hope that helps please ask more questions if you have any!

Videos like this remind me why I'm so glad the horse became the table. I hated the narrowness of the horse.
Back then was pretty different. You had many countries fighting one another and Olympics was a way to make amends (not resolving all problems). It's great to see different countries saluting and praising one another despite the battles they faced at home. Romania excelled in this part of the Olympics and I hope one day USA and Romania can face off again for the gold. Would be memorable moment! 💯😊

Shes actually the ideal gymnast of this decade - small and muscular.
She didn't stick either of those vaults and rarely does.

Weird that Produnova, Fei, & Maroney didn't win Olympic gold.
@Bradley Peloquin Yes under the perfect 10 system she had no chance. Under the current system just doing her Produnova with a deep squat like normal she probably wins easily.
Don't forget Shushunova (RIP). She was by far the best vaulter of the 85-88 quad, had won the AA, and had the gold sewn up before her 2nd event finals vault with a huge lead, just needed a 9.8 or something to win, and she fell.

Especially since Cheng and produnova made two of the hardest vault. I didn't get to see their Olympics so I was shocked they didn't win

Don't forget Shushunova in 1988. By far the dominant vaulter of the 85-88 quad, had won the AA, and had a huge lead going into her 2nd vault with her team scores and 1st vault score. She only needed a 9.8 to win (when she usually scores 10s) and fell.

Funnily enough, for me, the 2 most iconic vaults are from the team competitions. Kerri Strug’s 2nd vault while injured to clinch the gold for the women and McKayla Maroney.

As a Romanian by birth (now a US citizen in California), I wish Romania was still the global leader in gymnastics. I did gymnastics for a while growing up and lost track of the number of times I was told gymnastics was in my blood since I’m Romanian😪

I respect their hard work and dedication....but for all the people complaining about gymnastics not being "artistic/elegant" enough I have to say thank goodness we have gymnast pushing the boundaries just for the pace alone.

That Henrietta Onodi has such a beautiful model-type face in a tiny body. She must have been about 18 in '92 and looks so elegant and put-together. Stunning

It is so wild to me how much more difficult it is to throw an impressive vault. The vaults at the beginning of this video wouldn't even qualify you to hold your country's banner walking onto the floor these days.

I can't get over how much more lenient scoring used to be like it's shocking these days to see a seemingly perfect anything, not just vault, break a 9.25 on the execution score. whereas all these ones from the '80s have like big steps on the landings and they're still getting like 9.7, 9.8, and getting gold. it's wild to me
The Code has probably changed in terms of what is deducted and how much. Plus, the simpler vaults were once the highest skills once upon a time.
IIRC, the '68 Olympics winning vault was pretty much just a handspring over the horse!

The 1980 Moscow vault finals saw three best AA gymnasts falling in their second vaults (Davydova,Comaneci,Gnauck) so Shaposhnikova took her chance.
