- A guide to Novi Sad, Serbia for Tourists, Digital Nomads and Expats
So we set off to find the best places to live and work cheaply as digital nomads and we started with Europe, specifically Eastern Europe because of the relatively low cost compared to the high quality of life. What we found out would help people decide whether or not this place is for you even if you are a tourist!
In the last episode we were in Timisoara, Romania. Here we crossed the border to explore Novi Sad, Serbia. Also once part of the enormous Hapsburg Empire, a beautiful city that is not too big, is welcoming to foreigners, and has a charming downtown area. It's started to really pop up on the tourist radar as well as on the digital nomad and expat radar. But WHY?

My family will be moving to Belgrade in more than likely early August. The relative low cost of living compared with what I consider an outstanding quality of life made this an easy decision.
Novi Sad looks amazing as well. My wife prefers Belgrade due to its size, but we'll spend time in both places.

You can also visit the city of Niš in the south of Serbia, which is known as the hometown of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. And also for top quality food.
04:02 ticket for BUS for both directions, NS-BG + BG-NS is around 1000 dinars, something like 10 usd or 8 euros. Ticket for train is mutch more cheaper, i do not know exact price.
Thank you! We heard that the bus is a good option but it was a hassle to get to the bus station so we opted for a private car. The trains were not running when we were there, it was under construction.

It wasn't that cold. I don't mind. I prefer 40s and 50s (fahrenheit) to hot summers. :)
No Uber, but TAXI so much you want, and not expensiv. Can be call by phone and in about 3-5 minits (no mether in wich part of Town you are) is at your Adress. About Train, Train to Beograd goes about 10 Times a day and in 32 minits is there. Rest you have right Smokercity.
True, but for foreigners and people who don’t speak Serbian calling a taxi is a pain in the butt :-)
Novi Sad it's not only (old town, center area and fortress) and it's not a small town, Novi Sad is average medium sized city by european standards in diameter about 11 km.
And yeah, Novi Sad has a nice and solid underground community, so many gigs during a year and everything else.
Yeah, we got a lot of comments that were not happy with the word "town." It's relative I guess. For me it's a small city, which in contemporary American English we do often use the word town casually. It doesn't mean the same as village.
@@TobyNomad Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia is even smaller than Novi Sad :) Everything above 300 000 citizens in europe is considered as a medium average city. For example, some of popular Austrian cities are much smaller than Novi Sad ( Salzburg, Innsbruck etc) and they not considered as a small towns, they are counted as average cities.

Hi Eli! Sorry, we got the same criticism about Timisoara, Romania. I think part of it is having lived in places like Los Angeles, this is tiny. Also, maybe language, as in American English we often use the word "town" very loosely. Definitely not meant to be an offense :)

Dude, im sorry, but by any big country margins 200k inhabitants is considered small. Countries like russia usa or brazil only consider a city to be a big city or metropolis when it has at least 1 million inhabitants

Around 500 000 , don’t forget that many people living there have ID from other small places, so with a half a milion it can definitely can not be called a town, it is a city. And by a European standards, half a milion is a lot. Sure it is not a Tokio, but still, small town, definitely not. Only bigger places around are Budapest, Belgrade and Zagreb
Yeah I got that comment a few times :). In American English we use the word “town” very liberally. It’s doesn’t mean small. We even say “downtown” in big cities. But I know what you mean. :)

Now it is not that cheap, after a war started in Ukraine, prices skyrocketed, and huge migration of Russians and Ukrainians to Serbia, make a greedy home owners to triple the rents

wow. I was considering visiting Serbia but after finding out from you that smoking is allowed indoor everywhere (on top of the bad air quality), I've decided that I'd rather not go anymore. Just not worth the health risk imo.
The air quality is pretty average to good during the summer months since the main perpetrator of pollution are electric plants that are coal powered for the most part. As for the smoking, most of the indoor caffès and restaurants have a smokers section, but I would recommend you come during the summer or spring so you can sit outside which is much more pleasant. Hope you’ll change your mind since you’d be missing out. 😁
Well, sorry to hear that but glad if my honestly can help anyone. Some people are saying it's less noticeable in the summertime, when we went it was too cold to sit outdoors. If you go, maybe try in the summer when they say both of those factors are better. I will wait to hear your verdict on this if you go :))
I live here and I'm alive and healthy.. .Smoking is not allowed but there are places where you can smoke or where people smoke and break the rules you can always report such place to the authorities and they will be fined.So this is not true at all... in fact each restaurant has a sign at the entrance if smoking is allowed or not.Bad air is only in winter times..In fact summers are totally different when everything is green and the air is as clean as everywhere else.. There is an nice mountain near Novi Sad called Fruska Gora with small villages and vineyard which this picky guy hasn't mentioned at all.
@@JustineTX375 Hi Cicko! Thanks for your detailed response with examples. You're right, we did not see everything in the area at all. There is MUCH more to see. About air quality, I have also heard that it's better in summer. About smoking in restaurants, I have to disagree and ask you for proof. We went to probably 50 restaurants in the city center that we either ate in or considered eating in, and there was not a single restaurant that was smoke free. Most had smoking everywhere in the restaurant, and a few had a small section which they called "smoke-free" but there was no separation from the smoking area so all the smoke would immediately drift over. Our challenge to you, take a non-smoker to a good restaurant in Novi Sad and make a video where you can see no one smoking near them and have them say on the video "I don't smell smoke at all". Then I will believe you! :)
@@TobyNomad Serbia did try to reduce the smoking indoor by implementing new laws but it did not turn out well. Believe it or not, up to the year 2000 or so, you could even smoke indoor at your workplace. Now it is banned in all public facilities and all companies. They did try to reduce it in restaurants and cafes like 10 years back with mandatory non-smoking areas, each restaurant had to decide whether it will be smoking, mixed or non-smoking place. In the beggining in Novi Sad from what I've noticed a lot of them went for mixed with separate non-smoking area. What happened is that those areas in bars and restaurants were almost always empty or half empty, while smoking areas were packed, so all of those places eventually switched to full smoking places, as they found non-smoking areas non profitable. The reason for this happening being that most group of friends have smokers and non-smokers, and when going out, non-smokers will always give it to smokers, otherwise the smokers will be half of the time outside. Yeah, it's afwul, I know. But what can we do.
Your are also right about the air quality (water as well), it is poor, those from Novi Sad that say otherwise have never even been in Central or South Serbia to compare. Great video btw!

@@TobyNomadthere is also a Chinese and Russian versions of You Tube. And if you ever visited Moscow, Saint Petersburg, or any big city in China, you wouldn’t call west civilized, you would be shocked that everything is in better shape then in the west. Compare Moscow metro with New York one for example.
And the air is good in Novi Sad, it is a climate that is generally humid, but not always, spring is very pleasant. but the air is not poluted. And there are no smoking zones, but yea too many people smoke, but it is because cigarettes are cheap, compared to the rest of other parts of Europe.
Lgbt scene? What lol I know gay people, have a close friend that is lesbian, have few of them in the family, matter of preference. But we are still traditional, be what you want , but don’t parade about it.
And btw there are gay caffes in Novi Sad, even we str8 go there sometimes, since you can play Monopol, Ludo and so while haveng a beer, coffee, tea etc

And You are upset because children in Serbia my be exposed to cigarete smoke but I suppose You are not upset by the fact that children in USA can legaly mutilate themselves because "somebody" tell them, in the most vulnerable age, that they are not what they are acctualy by their birth and strongly encouraging them to do so....
Hi Suki, thanks for watching. That's pretty tangential, not sure how to respond to that. But yes, it was too smoky, even for a big child like me :) That's my perspective. Really liked the city overall though.

Hi Daniel, not sure what you mean about 500 years as Serbia was not an independent country for 500 years by any stretch of the concept, but it’s irrelevant as age doesn’t mean much. Never saw any tent cities, Novi Sad has different challenges than Los Angeles, different histories and different pros and cons. Way too much to summarize in a CZcams comment. It’s not a city-to-city comparison to childishly see “who is better.” We leave that to the online trolls and populist politicians :). This channel is mainly for Americans and other western viewers to help decide if they want to visit or live in certain places or be educated about them. It’s for people who like to think and learn about other places, not for people who want to fight or be right. I wasn’t asking permission for anything or requiring you to watch.
