+THOTH I can see how issues like race and money can divide people and bring out some raw emotions, but are you really getting that angry just defending the period of time you were born in? This is literally like someone telling you they prefer the 1986 2 door convertible over today's sedan option, and then you screaming back at 'Mr. I Love 1986' that he's a cunt and should fuck off back to that time period for the simple reason of being a person that can appreciate the past. Think of the worst case scenario involving racism. Well, one could argue that its built into us from birth, protecting our own, looking out for our fellow 'Man' etc etc etc. If someone was to say - "Go back to where you came from" for example - they are at least giving them a viable option that DOESN'T require time machines..
"The correct form is "to converse". "Conversate" is incorrect. Conversation is a common word, and the matching verb is to converse, not *conversate. Still, it is not used very much compared to synonyms."
@@Heartbeat214 actually conversate used to be commonly used here in the states and still is in the UK. It has fallen out of favor stateside but i think it's still technically correct. Don't quote me on that one. Fun fact: dickhead is the same on either side of the pond. 😊
I was born 1971 and grew up South East of Los Angeles. I remember gang members chasing each other in the streets with guns. PD would show up half an hour later lol.
@D Piz lol who cares not like hes pretending to be black to get a scolarship. This is north america you are where you grow up not where your ancestors did.
The sad part was the worst was yet to come. Oddly enough the murder rate would sky rocket after the gangs die out in the early eighties. The drug trade would take hold of the city like no where else. The Narco crews where far more violent. Remembering those days, growing up in the eighties in the south Bronx, I have few peasant memories. I’m grateful those days are over. What I do miss about those days are the people from that era, they where more real and down to earth.
-True, but what really wrecked things even more far worse than even heroin, was when crack hit. It destroyed so much & so many people that i'm willing to bet that some of the gang seen here are no longer living. It went from ravaging and killing a few individuals to parts of the neighborhood's population, decimating families to the point that many times only the young children were left, as the older brothers & sisters, & sometimes even the parents became crackheads & many later died from it. Then the crack dealers took over whole areas & changed shit drastically.& This was also before aids hit. & That also added more horror stories to hoods like this. So in a lot of ways this is a time capsule from the days before crack & aids. True they had their problems back then too, but i have to tell you that I miss those days.
Romega Vadquez the gangs didn’t die out in the eighties, they were still there in the eighties. Most started joining up together to make up the Latin kings, and bloods.
Nah you ain’t crazy, I’m the same. it was the environment like these that made the music and world look so gangsta and rebellious, this environment is what made hip hop in the 90s so gangsta.. it looks weird these days seeing a clean, gentrification area, with gang bangers or wannabe thugs or gangs, or bad neighbourhoods with dudes that look like they ain’t from the hood or don’t look like gangbangers hahahaha. Kinda miss the days you could just smoke everyone, have fun, be wild. These days it’s like cameras are everywhere or someone is snitching on you for social media.
Throw in big bird and Elmo you’d have a classic Sesame Street episode

Yeah!! where is morgan freeman and louis gosset jr.!! I know i saw the cookie monster, but he refused to be interviewed,..he had a bad habit at the time!! And the count was too busy pimping!!
The priest telling his old gang stories is a trip. But he's 100% right. The main issue with these people is a lack of family, primarily missing fathers in the homes.
I know a lot of middle class people with divorced parents and the father doesn't really play a pivotal role in their life. Mainly just spoils them as they spend weekends with him or whatever. And they end up okay. I would say you're part right. When you grow up poor, having a father makes a big difference. Instills a work ethic, fear of consequences that keeps you on the right path and away from pitfalls. But money cures a lot of problems. When most whites were living like the people in this video, they passed the "New Deal" to lift them out. Poor minority communities are just left to ruins.
That was hilarious at 25 minutes lol! Negotiating when to fight, or better yet..the smaller dude trying to buy more time before he gets his ass kicked lol. "You gonna hit me in my mouth...", "Ok, i won't hit you in your mouth, i'll hit you between the eyes", "Ya but still man, my leg is messed up" LOL This is amazing!!!
I used to ride the subways from the east side to Wall st as a teenager and frequently went thru Times sq,port authority, copped weed from a Puerto Rican in a tenement on the far west side and I never really got hassled, much less mugged. And I was a scrawny 5' 2 white boy then.Miss the old city..much more cool.
I respect these older gangs WAY more than the ones we see today. These old NYC gangs had discipline and respect going for them. Most of them were way more educated than any gang member today, they just had a hard life. These people were truly held down by the system, not like the kids today who THINK they're held down, but are mostly holding themselves down.
The kids are probably offspring of these ones. The blind followers of something that was. You are right we are all where we THINK we should be. No matter how high or low.
It's a shame bc NYC has always been original in everything, including their own gangs ...but, it became corny when they started calling themselves "Bloods" and "Crips". It's understandable in prison, but them using it out on the streets is embarrassing.
Gang culture was passed back and forth. It's just too hot in Cali to wear a denim coat. Or maybe the Cali dudes didn't like to sew, so they took a simpler route... bandanas.
The early apprehension about using guns is admirable. It allowed them to be tough and tribal without being murderers. And I’d argue someone that isn’t scared to get into a street fight is a lot tougher than someone who isn’t afraid to pull a trigger from a distance.
When people visit NY now, they expect to see a little bit of the Koolness left there from before.. It's gone because the majority populations of African Americans and Puerto Ricans are not dominant like before and are replaced by brand new immigrants... When I say that NY now is completely different than the 80's - mid 90's, I wish I could put it in 20 feet letters !!!! The generations of Italian people in NY also contributed to the Koolness of NY back then too, along with the other whites there ( there for generations) and it created a very interesting city with multiple layers and types of neighborhoods back then
This is a fascinating look at what people did in those times, its like witnessing a formation of a culture, look how they dress and how they act, so original and new and you can see which trends stayed on through history and which ones died out. Really amazing.
I use to drive through the S, Bronx 1983-1987 on my way to Yonkers raceway I use pray that I never broke down the place look like Germany after WWII I kid you not.
***** New York has changed a lot since then. I think most cities in America looked like that back then. There were some parts of LA that looked exactly like that.
LA is not a concrete jungle like NY is they don't have 40 stories buildings burnt out like NY, I would say LA is rather pretty compared to what NY looked like back than, I can't see how you can compare the 2 they're not even close, The Bronx back than look like WWII in berlin it was scary. You said most cities in America looked like that I don't think so, maybe Chicago but not LA.

Sunset Park Brooklyn was the turf of the Dirty Ones and La Familia. Grandma put us to bed at 7:30 and we would go to sleep listening to the gunfights in Sunset Park. We lived on 7th Ave near the corner of 49st and you could hear the gunfire. It was amazing and terrifying for little kids like my brother and I.
Jokes apart, these people heard of Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael,Ángela Davis and read something of Black Panthers. That's my opinion,i can be wrong in my statements.
Where are they now? I'd be interested in seeing whatever became of these guys. They seemed like some real solid dudes. These days you can't even trust your closest homeboy.
@Toolness1 Maybe when you guys shape up your Republican conservative party. And hold yourselves accountable to the racism that you promote and make an effort to change it then people will start looking at you backwoods degenerates in a brighter light. It's not time to make a change to the Republican party. It's time to go independent and stop voting for the status quo of white supremacy.
If you believe that Republicans promote white supremacy then you're an absolute fool. The Republicans were the ones who were against slavery and the Democrats were defending slavery. Why would we vote independent if they can't even promote themselves.
Leonardo Reyes Its not even a question of if they promote white supremacy or not. The real question is when will they ever stop. There is to much evidence and blatant hypocrisy for you to deny it. Republicans Vs Democrats...its literally two sides of the same coin. You keep being a political surrogate and continue to pander. You keep fighting for the status quo of white supremacy. But don't ask black people to follow you in your little genocidal pursuits going around denying reality of circumstances created by actions of the past and policies of the present.
Hongo Mann Stop being contrary simply for the sake of being contrary. Liberal Vs Conservative. Two sides of the same coin. When are those Democrats and Republicans going to put resources into the black community like they do every other community?
Green Giant realistically speaking were all sheep of the earth shaped by our cultural sorroundings. Its a vicious cycle aint it. At least New York wasnt filled with people living here for a year then walkin around saying they were New yorkers just for the reputation. You gotta have years in this city before you earn that title. Youre not a new yorker until youve been through the grinder and going through that grinder means hitting rock bottom and bouncing back on your feet IN THE SAME CITY. Not running back to mommy or poppy in wisconsin or whatever city state or country one is from cause your funds are low or you have nowhere to stay or you lost all your friends. this city will beat you into a whole bitch and only if you live here will you understand. People come to this city because of the grand picture someone drew up of it. They usually leave after they see its not all glitz and glamour.
Green Giant Man I grew up here first generation Dominican American. It doesnt matter how good and godfearing your family is theres so much temptation in this city and others trying to make a dime outta you or use you as a stepping stone. Its the same for the rest of the world but a small city in size with so many people piled on top of each other youre going to be a victim of some bullshit eventually. Crabs in a barrel mentality strives here. Its the fuel that keeps this city going sadly. Its the most beautiful mess truly. Ive left and came back and the opinion never changes. Also a decent job with a livable wage aint too realistic here. The majority live with roommates. Theres not enough money to go around for everyone to live comforably. And as you know if youre sharing space with others youll eventually pick things up from them willingly or unwillingly. And yeah man its nice having alot of energy flowing at all times and always being able to find what you need but as humans we need our space. Its all just bittersweet lol. At a large scale.
From all the death, drugs, danger, dilapidation and despair in the NYC ghettos of the 70's and 80's came a certain culture of authenticity, resilience, toughness and street wisdom that you couldn't really get anywhere else... Either the mean streets swallowed you whole, or if you were lucky and made it out, they taught you very valuable lessons and molded you into a warrior. Sure, they were hard and depressing times, but they were also pure, genuine great times where people were still people, before the gentrification brought sterility and corporate cookie-cutter soullessness to the streets of the city.
I grew up in the Bronx during this time, 77-78. It brought back a lot of memories. Ol'School homeboys. Homegirl Evelyn was hot as shit! Mami had it going on! The block parties were lit. I'd spend the evenings after coming inside hanging on the fire-escape chilling, watching everyone, and listening to the sounds of the hood. It gives you a different perspective on life. Sucks that the movie was uploaded flipped, but still good. A little side note the Catholic Father is the brother of Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, future boss of the Genovese crime family. I grew up around crews and wise guys, and the cops were either dirty or standup. The got to know which was which really fast. Just like the homeboys said you learned which ones you could respect and work with because they had a job to do, and which ones were trouble. NYC taught me a lot of shit, and I couldn't learn anywhere else, and it shaped how I view the world. It's not all black & white. It's shades of grey and you learn to work with the shades. When I hear anyone saying "all cops are this or all gang members are that" I just want to tell them to shut the fuck up, because 99.9% of the time motherfuckers never grew up in the real shit; so all they are doing is talking out their ass from a limited point of view. You never had time for a limited point of view in the Bronx back then. Just like D.S.R. I got into Taekwondo to get away from the streets and focus.
The way the old school gangs held themselves is actually respected a lot , they were all close respected each other like a family. The way they spoke wasn’t proper if you wanna say it like that but it was like they took pride in being able to have a conversation.i did some research on some New York gangs and one thing they didn’t stand for was the young guns trying to dip on a education. If any one saw a kid under 18 out of school someone in the gang would bring the kid or kids back which ya gotta respect.
This is not only good context if you're a fan of movies like The Warriors but also if you've seen like Dead Presidents. It puts into perspective that alot of these young guys were probably old enough to have been to Vietnam. Saw some crazy stuff and then had to come back to a bankrupt city on the brink of desolation would put everyone in a weird head space on top of the hustle & bustle of the city and being forced into desperate situations like the guy said a couple weeks and the average person would bug out
My dad grew up in Soundview and he use told me stories about the 60s and early 70s. We use to stay the summers in the 90s. It’s crazy how much NYC has changed.
I didn't even grow up in nyc or live there ever but this was a really well made doc and I felt transported to the middle of it, especially during the block party. Wonder if the girl ever broke up with her boyfriend and got with fly, they had energy going.
Although I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1970s/80s... I'm still glad I grew up when I did in NYC.... the music was great the people was great, even the cops were cool.... it was all about RESPECT, and believe me I almost got my ass beat on the F train around 1980 for stepping on this kids pumas... man I though that was it for me, he was with his crew from Brooklyn Tech while I was flying solo... I told him I messed up, I tripped... did not want no trouble I flat out told the truth, I was prepared to catch a beating, I knew I messed up bad, and I was not even going to fight back, I was going to take it like a man, and you know it never came, everyone cooled out thank God and I believe it was the truth that set me free, and that was a real turning point in my life, maybe his too !! Today... everything today's different.... I can't even begin to imagine what it's like now. David Barron, this video was great, thanks for posting....

I can see how issues like race and money can divide people and bring out some raw emotions, but are you really getting that angry just defending the period of time you were born in?
This is literally like someone telling you they prefer the 1986 2 door convertible over today's sedan option, and then you screaming back at 'Mr. I Love 1986' that he's a cunt and should fuck off back to that time period for the simple reason of being a person that can appreciate the past.
Think of the worst case scenario involving racism. Well, one could argue that its built into us from birth, protecting our own, looking out for our fellow 'Man' etc etc etc. If someone was to say - "Go back to where you came from" for example - they are at least giving them a viable option that DOESN'T require time machines..
"JAMAL" looks the same forwards and backwards.

You had to communicate to be respected. You had to say what you mean and back up what you said. You were not just feared , you were respected.
Still, these people lived more in a day than this internet culture has in a decade. We are slaves now...
"The correct form is "to converse". "Conversate" is incorrect. Conversation is a common word, and the matching verb is to converse, not *conversate. Still, it is not used very much compared to synonyms."

Romega Vadquez but n
Nickey Barnes was before the 80's
True words. The crack era was the most violent in NYC
Romega Vadquez the gangs didn’t die out in the eighties, they were still there in the eighties. Most started joining up together to make up the Latin kings, and bloods.
Romega Vadquez yep you are right. Where is NWA now?
I might sound crazy but I miss these days, even the music was bomb.

No matter how high or low.
boom
Maxxx Modelz well said
these old gangz were way worse violent wise than the kids today.... yall all sound dumb.
Maxxx Modelz you have a skewed way of seeing this they aint all that different from the gangs of today. Youve romanticised it in your head.
One thing I like about these videos is that I see how my mother grew up in nyc at the time.
“I’m just explaining to them about our enemies compadre. That cool?” I felt intimidated and I wasn’t even close to born.
This was before NY started adopting Cali and Chi gangs.
MobHeataEnt they had a Chicago gang in this the Latin eagles.
Bloods in New York were born in New York prisons as response to Latin Kings. It's not the same as blood gang in Cali.
It's a shame bc NYC has always been original in everything, including their own gangs ...but, it became corny when they started calling themselves "Bloods" and "Crips". It's understandable in prison, but them using it out on the streets is embarrassing.
MobHeataEnt YOU DON'T KNOW THE HALF TO BE TALKING LIKE YOU TALKING, AND TO ACT LIKE YOU.

New York has changed a lot since then.

Still around. Still voting for democrats, keeping the cycle of poverty and government dependence going for their kids.
They really add so much to a community when they stop criminal activity.

Sure, they were hard and depressing times, but they were also pure, genuine great times where people were still people, before the gentrification brought sterility and corporate cookie-cutter soullessness to the streets of the city.
u5chi1 lololol as I scroll down im seeing you go at everyone's neck in these comments
The good times....today’s newyork is weak compared to the 70’s

This is "80 Blocks From Tiffany's". Great documentary and interesting history of what the NYC underground gang society was like.
