I've done this trip both ways and as I enjoy traveling by train I did enjoy it. You go through some beautiful countryside. However, 12 hours is too long even for me and it's bloody slow, especially at the Sydney end. They need new rails. I now live in Japan and the Shinkansen bullet train would do it in half the time!
I don’t mind long train rides, but it shouldn’t be this outdated and slow between the state capitals. I would loooooove to try out the Shinkansen!
Yeah that's a fair comment.. however we are not to forget the enormous population difference and the very expensive costs of running the whole system in Japan...it actually costs 10% of the GDP to run it because they consider it an essential service to the overall business welfare of the country...
I just did the return trip. In reflection, it definitely needs to be modernised. I am not expecting bullet train speeds, but double tracks all the way, so you don't have to wait for other trains, traffic improvements in urban centres so urban traffic won't delay the train. Improved track so train can keep up a reasonable speed. Comfort levels need Improving along with wifi and charging jacks for each seat.
No one has ever been able to make an economically viable case for constructing fast rail between Sydney and Melbourne, and no one ever will.

I would ride this train. I have rode in the high speed trains in Europe. Apart from the faster speed, everything else is the same.
@@peregrinemccauley5010 no, these trains absolutely suck. They are incredibly slow, unreliable, creaky and frankly smelly.
The long distance trains in Japan are also booked by the ticket and are simply better than the XPT in every conceivable way.
The crammed trains you’re talking about are their suburban metro trains and have no relevance to long distance travel
Thanks, I got a great offer for a new motorcyle at Yamaha City in Melb ournes CBD. I live in Sydney. Solution took this train. Such fun. Walked out at Southern Cross Station at 7.30 am, with my bike gear in bags looking like a derro to the people arriving for work, LOL. Picked up the bike, stayted a mate met me on his bike, escorted me back to his house in Melbourne, Ivanhoe. Did some trips into the countryside for a couple of days. Then rode the motocycle back to Sydney. Had 2 years brilliant use. Buit lost my driving licence 2 months ago for 6 months due to an insane speed on Bells Line of Rd across the Blue Mountains. It is a very good motorcycle. 4 and half months to go. Loved the train trip. So pretty esp the Sydney to Canberra part.
that train ride from melb to sydney was pretty good and cheap. last time i drove to sydney from melbourne it took me 10 hours. it would make a nice change to go by train and not have the hassle of driving... and filling up with petrol several times. great report. thanks Josh

I love catching the XPT down to Melbourne. My family went on it almost every summer when I was a kid, either all the way to Melbourne, or to Cootamundra. I haven't been on it in almost ten years, but I'm finally going on it next month! It's a damn miracle if that train is running on time, but I just love it. The smell of diesel always reminds me of those summer holidays on the XPT. I totally agree that the meals mostly suck, but the Devonshire tea is always worth it!
What blows my mind is that they've done absolutely nothing to upgrade that train. I remember looking for patterns in that exact same seat upholstery when I was a very small child, and I'm in my thirties now. The cafe car looks exactly the same, the toilets, everything. I don't mind the lack of Wifi or phone reception too much, because I kind of enjoy that forced switching off time. However, the lack of power outlets is ridiculous.

Yeah, it seems like an easy upgrade to me, they put usb ports on the old London tube trains on the tiny Isle of Wight line, I’m sure they can manage on this.
So not much faster than just driving the whole distance, though the fuel cost these days probably exceeds that of a train ticket. Australian intercity train lines could do with some modernisation, here's hoping at least the Brisbane - Sydney fast rail proposal pans out. I heard it's supposed to be a precursor to a high-speed line linking Brisbane - Sydney - Canberra - Melbourne but it's also something of an old idea that never worked out.
It’s true, only plus side is you don’t need to concentrate on driving. I would love a high speed service, but think it will be a very long way off.
Significantly slower actually. Driving is 8.5 hours plus whatever time you add when stopped for breaks. 10hrs max. 850km on a 110kph freeway. And if you have a passenger the car is also cheaper. Sad really, the train is an afterthought in Australia :(
A lot of the line from Goulburn to start of Sydney is still diesel so they would have to upgrade the line, the line is mainly used by freight so trains are every hour If you are lucky
It's slower. Much slower. With 2 drivers and stoppages I can get from south western sydney to the centre of Melbourne in a little over 8 hours. A new alignment is desperately need and you can forget about vhst as that is money we just don't have to spend and waste.
So I'm pretty sure freight has higher priority than a countrylink train. Within the Sydney suburban area they don't have priority either they don't run them into Sydney during peak hour and with reason.
Would you prioritise a Cityrail waratah train with 1200 working people or a countrylink train with 100 retirees? One is time critical as you have to arrive at work on time whereas countrylink passengers are not time critical and can arrive anytime.

It is a long time since I caught an interstate train anywhere or heard the word Dunny used for toilet. More roomy than a bus granted and it is good they now have a cafe food carriage on that train. You are right, some WiFi and charging ports would be nice and the trip is too slow for modern times. I love trains but more recent miss-management of our railways in NSW put me off and when I travel I now go bus all the way for long trips.I liked the old red rattlers we used to have with the compartments and being able to open windows. If you go old school why not all the way? Bring them back if you don’t modernise. Have them as a antique novelty trip.
i take the XPT from maitland to sydney when im heading to the airport. much easier with luggage and less people usually and it cuts out like a good hour ish of travel time so it works well for me and for$35 for a first class - cant beat that
Hi Josh, thanks for an interesting video. I have done this trip several times over the years. My earliest trip was way back in January 1967 by the then well known Inter-Capital Daylight train. I am not 100% positive of this, but I think the bathroom taps on the XPT may work on a sensor, where you hold your hands underneath and the water automatically flows. At least that is what is supposed to happen. I never find the trip tiresome, as being a radio enthusiast, I usually have a small radio with earphones on hand and I can check out all the different stations coming through while traveling. Good stuff. I never knew that passenger train line even existed. I'm planning to do a Vline train trip to Sydney via Lakes Entrance, Merimbula and Canberra soon. I went up to Sydney on it last Friday,it was so painfully slow I jumped off at Mossvale & took a $200 uber to Campsie
Just to clarify, the reason the doors are locked is to allow the cleaners to clean the train before departure. This is standard operations.
Yeah I know, but this is usually done well before departure, usually you can jump on board 20 minutes before you leave.
Great video, nice to see the economy side. In some ways it beats flying because theres less security screening/queues and no need to take a bus from Avalon or Tullamarine airport to Melbourne (still cant believe Melbourne still doesn't have a train to either airport!). Although it would be so much better if it were faster or had charging/wifi like you say

@@PackingLess most Jetstar flights are at Tullamarine anyways but atleast Tullamarine is getting a rail link to be ready no earlier than 2059
If it was a little faster it would be better with check in time and travel time to the airport included. For the record I’ve flown into Avalon more than a few times, sometimes the low fare is only to that airport and if you’re hiring a car it’s not that inconvenient.

For me, you would never see that train outside of Sydney, there would get a replacement bus
Grew up seeing the Brisbane XPT passing my house.
I've made two daytime return trips between Goulburn and Melbourne on this train over the past few weeks, and have to make a third such return trip in about a week's time. Something that may surprise a new passenger is how rough the ride is over a part of the trip - particularly the stretch between Goulburn and Yass Junction. It's slow along that stretch as the train rounds frequent curves while crossing the Great Dividing Range, and it's the roughest ride along there that I've experienced on a train. I'm told by a friend in Sydney, somebody who has taken trips on the XPT between Sydney and Goulburn (but not further), that it's not like that on the Sydney side of Goulburn.
The real rough stuff is south of Albury. Blame ARTC and there archaic method of track and sleeper replacement.
@@carisi2k11 Is that a recent impression, though? My recent three return trips between Goulburn and Melbourne were over February-March 2023 (within the past twelve weeks as at the time of posting this). The ride between Melbourne and Junee was relatively good and fast for this train. It was beyond Junee that the quality of the ride started to deteriorate.

The night sleeper train felt less boring and long than the day time train. I think mainly because your in a cabin and trying to sleep. The day train you are just sitting there for the whole journey.

@@yoMaltz you can do that at the luggage hall near platform 2. Also there is luggage storage on the train at each end of the car so you don’t have to check it in. There’s a small amount of room in the me cabin too if you have a sleeper. Enjoy they journey!

Great video. I’m doing a return Sydney-Melb this week economy one way then First class return. Wondering…..if passengers cancel their first class tickets even up to the day before are economy passengers able to upgrade their economy tickets?
I’m not entirely sure, though if you see them at the desk at central when you leave they will be able to tell you. The only difference of first class is a tiny bit of leg room and a bit closer to the dining car, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it
Yes. First tends to attract a better class of passenger, and the difference in pitch (leg room) is considerable. If travelling on the day train, ring the call centre if you want to be booked in car A, the sleeper, set up for daytime use - three per compartment - some face backwards so ask for 'forward facing' and a 'window seat'. You cannot change seats online.
I like to go to Australia especially Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Newcastle, Canberra and other places. And to ride on their trains. Including the XPT HST that look similar to the Class 43 HST in the UK.
The power cars are based on the BR Class 43 with many modifications for the Aussie conditions including lower geared traction motors to handle the steep gradients to be encountered. Hence the design speed 160 km/h (99 mph). Carriages are based on a Budd design.
Each entire train was manufactured by COMENG in Australia. Later additions were manufactured by ABB, again in Australia, when COMENG folded.

They loco's look similar but are vastly different. The XPT's have suspension designed to meet the rougher conditions and because it isn't flat like the UK there are some gearing modifications as well as upgraded cooling for the vp185's. The carriages however are nothing at all like the UK units. Wider for a start and again with localised suspension they are more of a US design.

There are no trains anywhere near Melbourne airport. You need to get a taxi or the Skybus (AU$20) to Southern Cross Station in the city and go from there.

I can travel from Shanghai to Beijing in 4 hours with a distance of 1500km for 100 AUD and complete 4G coverage, but in Australia I need to waste more than 12 hours and no internet connection at all in only 900km for merely the same price. This country should not be like this and your people should really think about it.
