As a person who has never played a Dragon Quest game, I think this movie is really nice. The only reason why I even decided to watch the movie was only because I play Hero DQ8 (Bandana Boi). This movie really got me interested in the DQ games and now I'm buying a Dragon Quest game because of it. Funny how putting a character in a fighting game can get you to invest your time and money into their series.

Finally got around to watching this and I personally thought the ending wasn't just good, but it was necessary to making the rush though the DQV story seem reasonable. The ending showed us that the player chose to skip through the childhood arc of the game and honestly, after seeing the ending it made so much stuff about this movie just pop into place and sit well with me. Kind of like how you mentioned they skipped over the whole Gotha section of the game, well, they did this because the VR player chose to skip over it.
I really enjoyed this movie and if they were limited to only about an hour and a half due to budget or whatever I found the ending we got to be the perfect way to justify skipping over certain story elements without disrespecting the source material and pretending they just don't exist. Also, probably an unpopular opinion, but I felt Nera and Bianca got better characterization here than they even did in the game. In the game your wife takes a back seat to your children during act 3 and you don't really get much out of them, but that isn't the case here.
Loved how Luca recruited Bjorn which references how you can do that in the game during post game. Loved how the anti-virus was Erdrick's Sword. Loved the metal slime scene.
In the end this movie WAS NOT a movie based off of Dragon Quest V. It was a movie based off of a player's experience playing Dragon Quest V and showing us what they got out of the game, how they interpreted it, and how much the game meant to them. Solid 9/10, one of the best videogame movies ever made.

    • @iabugueno
      @iabugueno Před rokem +2

You pointed out some interesting references there ✨
You're so right with the Bianca and Nera characterizations, playing the game and choosing Bianca makes Nera to be kind of an incidental character, opossed to what happens in the movie. The only bad thing to point out is that you miss many elements if you don't know the story of the game first, including references, but in my experience I found it to be a solid movie :,)

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin Před rokem

That is some pretty flawed logic. WE are the player, not some pretend VR player who doesn't exist. Who the hell thinks like that while watching a movie? They don't even show him meeting the two girls as a kid. How exactly is that supposed to equate to what you felt while playing the game, like at all?
Answer is it doesn't. They screwed up. That is a part of the movie that HAD to be there, & how they thought it would be ok not to have it is just mind boggling to me. They could have extended the movie by just 5 minutes or so, showing him meeting them as a kid & that would have been HUGE for the movie experience as a whole.
A mere 30 seconds of him bumping into Flora & maybe a quick 5 minute jaunt of him & Bianca going out adventuring together. Even if it meant cutting that portion way down, keeping the part where they first meet & the part at the end where she gives him the Ribbon is ESSENTIAL to show!
Even if they had to take away 5 minutes from the Adult portion, it would have been worth it. No part of the game is more important for setting up a movie like this than showing how he met these girls in the first place!

    Honestly, I thought this movie would've been better as a trilogy;
Childhood where the cliffhanger ending is where the father is killed and the hero is taken in as a slave...
Adulthood where the cliffhanger ending is after the hero has his children OR gets turned to stone...
The climax where we find out the true hero and the buildup to the final battle

Absolutely. Or even 2 movies, just add a cliffhanger for who he wants to marry.
Also Bianca honestly is better in the movie than in the game, and I loved her in the game.
One of the few things I’m glad they didn’t put in the movie from the games is the part where they auctioned off the stoned hero. It works in the game, but not in the movie. Also, how the son was able to use the Zenethian Sword was amazing, whereas in the game, I don’t like that kid tells you he can use the sword.
However, I disliked lack of Zenethian equipments, and that part should be a reason for more than 1 movie. And the lack of daughter, because I felt she kept her brother from having too much of an ego.

      @Dan_om3 Před 4 lety +5

Dude, the most obvious hint is that the movie takes place in a game and not in a fantasy world is that in several scenes enemies burst into coins and loot after getting slashed, that clearly gave it away for me. I think if you are observant enough, they placed enough elements to make a lot of sense out of the realization that its a game. For example the robots guarding the fairies makes no sense in a fantasy world, yet the fact that they exists makes a suggestion that they were simply put there and that is explained when in a flashback the protagonist asks a programmer to put them there.
For me the fact that the movie has videogame logic was foreshadowed many times. But the actual fact that the game is not the only reality in the movie did surprise me and I thought it was a clever twist.

This was about a DQ fan who wanted to relive this game again and played his role as Luca. I knew something weird was happening after the love potion scene. I wonder if something like DQ3 would have been easier to adapt sense the story mostly boils down to a young man having to finish what his father started by defeating Baramos. And seeing how story isn't really the major focus of DQ3 and how the party members aren't really characters it probably would have given more room for them to portray the story however they wanted.

  • @jacoblucas7414

A few days ago, i cleared the story for the Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Right after that, I watched the film with great delight. It was a shame not seeing Tabatha (Hero's Daughter) or Nimzo in the film. It may be from how the original super famicom version could only have 3 party members at a time like in Luminaries of the Legendary Line. The film must've matched that specific version. So they made that party Luca, Bianca, and the legendary hero, Alus. That version didn't include Deborah neither. I went and chose Bianca in the game as my experience with her in the past and present grew my in-game feelings for her, sort of how Luca chose her too. The old lady mage actually being Nera was a shock. It could only be possible if she had Morph or her scepter was a Mod Rod. I did enjoy hearing orchestral tracks from the other DQ games such as Brave Fight from VI during the final fight with Ladja. (By the way, i listened to that track during my final fight with Ladja myself. Talk about a coincidence.) I heard about a twist ending and thought it was just a change of fates in the film than the game. Luckily, this discovery left my mind until it hit me after the sword was sealing the gates. "Nimzo looked weird." i thought at first sight of the virus. What started out as a retelling of the Hero of the Heavenly Bride's journey turned into a Westworld/Matrix sense of reality chosen by Luca. Even so, i gladly accepted the message conveyed in the ending. Even though my playthrough of the game defined my view of the main story (especially with defeating Nimzo with a family-powered Kazapple), the movie did alright capturing mostly everything in the realm of the Heavenly Bride. If you think about it, that was only 1 of the 11 possible DQ stories Luca could've chose instead. There were multiple stations established possibly for the other games' tales. Luca just went through his favorite of the bunch. This must be why it's called Your Story. Because no matter where you end up in the DQ games, The hero.... is you!!! Rating: 9/10
(P.S. I heard this film provided a small update to the game's mobile version i played. It's a new Casino prize called a Monster Magnet. It raises the likelihood of monsters wanting to join you.)

Hey man, first of all: Welcome Back, i dont have Twitter, so i didnt think your hiatus was over ( it was crazy in these last months).
And now to the topic at hand: i Love this movie.
In comparisson to other videogame movies, this one does many things right. It has its own complete Story (it was told through dq 5 already, but still) and it complimented its source Material (atleast until the final scene).
While it probably would have been better to split the movie into multiple parts (childhood, adventuring days and Family finale) it was still enjoyable to me as a full experience.
But thats a curse that most movie adaptations share: they lack time and Detail to polish the Story so many things are simply cut or glossed over (another way worse example:The Eragon Movie)
Before you read the following, a reminder: ive never played dq 5 sadly, but i got the outlines of the story somewhat down thanks to your video.
So this Statement is probably not shared by many but: i really liked the ending scenario.
While i understand that most people would have rather wished for the rightfull Finale, we got a different ending more directed to US as the players. The execution with the Hackervirus and slime as McAfee-Sword-of-Light felt really forced, but the Message it delivered still stuck with me.
Even though at the end of the day, we are sitting in Front of a Monitor/TV screen and press plastic Buttons to advance in a product free from any practical value: WE experienced these Stories, WE got emotionaly attached to those characters and where influenced by them to this day.
In a time where i questioned those adventures i had with many games and thought of them as a waste of my childhood, this was a powerfull Message. It made me feel good about these times again, when i overcame odds and cheered with the heroes.
But that's just my Humble opinion.

I agree, and to tell you the truth, I´ve seen people who did not play any DQ game that have seen the movie, liked the ending, it´s probably the opposite thing of what the creators expected, but it has gotten many people I know interested in DQ or JRPGs in general. I still think the movie would have been awesome if we got the usual endgame scenario.
Now, things like cutting down on the sister and parts of the story it´s probably due to time and budget, just having extra 5 mins of animation is really REALLY expensive and months of work for a 3D feature film of that quality, it´s not a big studio, so I think they managed to do something good with their "limitations", or at least for the most part. But like I said in my other post, next DQ movie should probably follow the game entirely and skip on any crazy twists. (Or do it more subtly, like, after the movie ends, camera pans out and we see it all happened inside a CRT and there´s a kid playing the game or something).

Somehow the dog, Koromaru, can actually talk, and he tells the protagonist that he's got an anti-virus program that he gives him, and it turns the protagonist's Persona into Messiah, which defeats the virus. And then the Nyx battle never actually happens, and everyone lives happily ever after.
No seriously, the DQ Your Story ending sucked bad.

Before I say my opinions on the movie, let me just say I've only just recently gotten into the Dragon Quest series. I played Dragon Warrior back in November and I beat Dragon Quest XIS not even a month ago at this point. If you feel my opinions are invalid because I haven't played Dragon Quest V, well...I don't really care lol. That aside...
Honestly, I really enjoyed this movie. I watched it with one of my friends and my girlfriend. The three of us don't really know much about Dragon Quest at all, and out of the three of us I know the most basically by default, but all three of us ended up really enjoying the movie. The visuals were absolutely breathtaking and I loved the bounciness the characters had in their animations sometimes, specifically the conversations with Nera and Luca. It prevented the movie from becoming *too* real if that makes sense.
I didn't have too many issues with the movie, but one of them came with Nera, specifically with how she was introduced. At least the intro went over Bianca slightly, so you at least know she exists, but they did absolutely nothing like that with Nera and, admittedly I was confused. However, the movie clearly states that the two of them were childhood friends, so even if it's not shown, it's shown by their interactions that there was a time when they were very close.
Call it an unpopular opinion but I didn't "hate" the ending. It wasn't my favourite thing ever but I understand the message they were trying to convey. Obviously this movie is meant for those who grew up playing Dragon Quest, V specifically, that's shown very obviously with Luca with little flashbacks of him playing the original Super Famicom version as a child, and then the PlayStation 1 port as a late teen/early adult. Call me an apologist or whatever but I think my opinion on this specifically is worth a lot considering I have no childhood nostalgia of Dragon Quest V, let alone the series itself.
One last thing I want to go over is the first half. You mentioned in your video that the first half of the movie could come off as extremely confusing to people who haven't played the game (or something along those lines, I'm writing this as I just finished watching your video and I'm not going to go quoting you word for word). There was little to no confusion between myself and my friend and girlfriend. Like I mentioned before, the only thing we were really confused on was who the heck Nera was and what her relationship with Luca was, but again, that was explained very obviously along with other things you had complaints with. I watched this movie again a couple days later because I enjoyed it so much and...surprise surprise, everything still made sense.
I hope you have the chance to read all of this, sackchief. Like I said, I never played Dragon Quest V, let alone grew up with it, so I hope my opinions on this movie are somewhat validated. And yes, I'll get around to playing it eventually lol, I'm swamped with JRPGs as it is.

I actually loved the ending! It was such a unexpected twist and the direct message to the fans "Those Characters are more for me than just data because of everything i lifed through with them" was awesome. Also the whole "This is just a game" was actually hinted at with the Potion of truth that Luca took and which sended him into a Cyberspace like world of his mind. He said in the Flashback to the employee that he wanted to take Nera for a change this time because he always took Bianca in the old game, but the Potion discovered his true feelings that he has by diving into the depths of his heart, the heart of the player and not of the Protagonist. Also the moment when the Virus disabled the colision detection and Bianca slipped through Lucas Hands just broke my heart a bit. I did feel the beginning being to rushed and a ranted a lot about it in the first minutes until i decided to try just enjoy the movie and be happy with what i got, because i knew the couldnt cramp 80 hours into 90 Minutes. And honestly after i losen up my expectation the movie got so much more enjoyable. Not that its bad, its really good in what it is supposed to be i think, but u have to face it with an open mind for changes to enjoy it. Thats what i think at least

Hi sackchief! I just wanted to take this time and opportunity to say thank you so much for introducing me to Dragon Quest! I have just got Dragon Quest 11 during the holidays last year from a friend of mine and I have been enjoying the game a lot!
I have been watching your videos ever since your video that you uploaded about "Who is Erdrick? And why he DESERVES to be in Smash Bros Ultimate" when during the time when there were leaks and talks about Erdrick from Dragon Quest 3 and Banjo and Kazooie coming to Smash Ultimate which of course both characters were confirmed at E3 2019 alongside with the other Heroes from Dragon Quest 11, Dragon Quest 8, and Dragon Quest 4.
But ever since that video, you had so much great knowledge and did a fantastic job on explaining on what the Dragon Quest games are and how big and essential it is for the JRPG genre of games. Yes, there are other JRPG games like Persona, Final Fantasy, Xenoblade, Tales of, Kingdom Hearts, and especially Pokemon that are also fun JRPG games. But as mentioned perfectly, Dragon Quest is the oldest JRPG video game that started this genre and helped made it big and popular even to this day. Dragon Quest even helped other companies to make their own JRPG video games like the ones that I mentioned and the bunch of other JRPG games out there.
Once I started playing Dragon Quest 11, I said to myself "Dragon Quest truly is a special video game" and I was so amazed by the world, the monsters, the characters, and the story.
Sorry if my comment is long, but I wanted to express to you of how much I am starting to love Dragon Quest and how I am thankful that Dragon Quest 11 is my very first Dragon Quest game to start getting into these beloved games. And it is all thanks to you sackchief. Thank you once again for introducing me to Dragon Quest from the bottom of my heart and starting today I will become a subscriber to your channel. You definitely deserve another subscriber with all of your hard work you put into your Dragon Quest videos.
And before I am done commenting, I have three different Dragon Quest related questions that I would like to ask real quick. Question #1: How did you get into the Dragon Quest games? Question #2# Which is your favorite monster enemy throughout the Dragon Quest games? Question #3: In the Yggdrasil's Altar stage in Smash Ultimate, there is a big huge flying white whale that travels around the stage. Who is that big white whale and what is his purpose in Dragon Quest? If it's a big spoiler to the game, you don't have to answer it.
That's all I like to say. Thank you again sackchief for your videos of Dragon Quest and for helping me understand and getting me into the games. As I said earlier, you earned a brand new subscriber. Also, happy first day of April, time flies so fast. Long live Dragon Quest. 😊😊😊🐉🐉🐉🐲🐲🐲

Hi, thanks for the support. I was introduced to DQ through a demo disc for DQVIII that I got in my Shonen Jump magazine subscription in fourth grade. @@sackchief Interesting. I did not know that Shonen Jump magazines came with PS2 demo discs back in the day. That's very cool. Fat Rat from Dragon Quest 2 is a good choice as a monster enemy. For me though, it's so hard to choose from! All of the monsters just has such funny and unique designs to each of the monsters throughout the DQ games. My favorite monster enemies so far are Slime, Dracky, Cruelcumber, Needler, Dancing Devil, Bunicorn, Hammerhood, Golem, Bubble Slime, Eggoskeleton, and Platypunk. Lots of monsters I know, but I love them! Akira Toriyama is the artist in Japan! Also, that's good then that you did not told me on what the whale was. I want to be surprised.

I first watched the movie as a non-DQ fan and... I loved it.
The finale literally shed me to tears, and I couldn't stop them all the way through the credits.
DQ is extremely important and people wanted a movie that could be as important and well made...
But in my opinion it went WAY BEYOND that.
It's not just a movie about DQ. It's a movie about... Gamers. People who grew up with games.
People say that the finale breaks the immersion, but for me it was the opposite.
With the rest of the movie, my immersion was 100%. With the finale my immersion was... 100000%. I wasn't Luca anymore. I was ME.
The title Your Story ended up being perfect for this.
I didn't see the Virus as a mask for DQ haters. It represented people that view videogames as a waste of time, that tell us to "grow up". We all had those.
The final dialogue from the protagonist put to words what I always wanted to say. And what I always wanted to hear, from somebody else.
I bet everything that in many years from now, Your Story will become one of those movies recognized as ahead of their time, hated at release but appreciated in the future.
I watched it two times and cried both...
Soon, I'll watch it a third time.
Who knows if I'll cry again.
What I know is that thanks to Your Story I am a DQ fan now, and started playing the games. And that Dragon Quest: Your Story is my favorite movie period.
Edit: Oh, and thanks to it now I'm a subscriber of yours, too!

i feel like the story twist should've been saved into an original dragon quest story tbh. the hacker could've been transported into a dragon quest story and they could be the best friend or maybe even... lover of the usual dragon quest protag. I feel like it would be a good story of someone embracing the story that is given to them by having to be immersed in that story.
Someone being transported into a world that they may hate (maybe for personal reasons) and having a personal connection with the characters as people. I think it would've been a good twist on the standard dragon quest story and could've given this evil hacker character a story arc of some sort.

I still cannot fathom this movie not even bothering to show him meeting the two girls as a child. A mere 30 seconds of him bumping into Flora & maybe a quick 2 minute jaunt of him & Bianca playing together would have been enough. Even if it meant cutting the Ghost Castle portion out completely, keeping the part where they first meet where they try reading the book together, a short montage showing them playing together, & then the part at the end where she gives him the Ribbon, that scene in particular was absolutely ESSENTIAL to have in this film!
Can you imagine how much more impactful it would have been had they had the scene where Bianca gives child Hero her Ribbon? That would have gone such a huge way in making the watcher gain a connection with these characters! What an absolute flub by the ppl who made this movie... Makes you wonder if the ppl who made it were actually fans, otherwise how would they NOT know how important that scene is??

Like those short Greek stories where it's condensed despite taking over a period of time, only telling the important points. That prolly helped me enjoy it, time skips and all because it actually helped play into the 'tale' aspect, sticking with only the most important part. But honestly, unless you play some video games, much less at least one Dragon Quest to get the spells, references, and monsters, it's gonna go over people's heads easily. And yeah, the child part was too quick. I actually forgot who the girls were.

I've only played the Erdrick Trilogy, 8, and 11, but there were plenty of musical cues, enemies, spells and traditions that I recognized just based on my general knowledge of the series. It made me feel nostalgic for completely different DQ games, which is quite impressive. The story did feel rushed however, and the twist at the end gave me mixed feelings. Despite this, the animations are phenomenal, the visuals are gorgeous, and the overall feel of the movie was very fun and enjoyable. A solid 7/10 movie

I've watched this just now without ANY knowledge of Dragon Quest. I did notice that some things were going by fast and the lack of information in some places but it didn't bother me too much since i was liking the movie. Now about that ending, i was a little surprised but i did like it, the message they wanted to pass was a really good one and it speaks to me a lot although i do understand why DQ fans might not like it. I mean, if i got something like this instead of a boss i was anticipating to appear at the end of a movie about my favorite game, i would be kinda mad too.

14:35 what is/are the best adaptation(s) from a Video Game to a Film for you ?

Most of my "complaints" about this movie are minor nitpicks, such as the daughter, King Korol, and Nimzo not appearing, and the fact that they used Orgodemir's theme instead of Nimzo's for the part where he was supposed to appear. Also, the Metal Slime scene should've had Luka manage to damage one, then they all run away (that's happened to all of us, and it's always heartbreaking). Everything else I was willing to accept. Yes, that includes the ending. I felt that it made sense, and it helped certain things slot into place, like certain sections of the story getting skipped (IRL Luka chose to skip those parts). And it didn't feel like "pandering", it felt like a fellow fan of this incredible series putting into words how we feel about it. To be fair, though, you're right about this film not exactly being friendly to newcomers. I probably would've had a harder time following along if I didn't already know the story of Dragon Quest V by heart.
In the end, I really do love this film. It's like a love letter to fans of the game. And I embrace the changes because it's not "Dragon Quest: Madason's Story", it's "Dragon Quest: Your Story". Luka is the hero, and so are you.

I went into this film thinking it was an adaptation, but instead it ended up being a love letter.

Finally watched it for myself today and I pretty well agree with this. The pacing and omission of many plotpoints was honestly really bugging me until the ending in a weird way. The ommisions make sense given the meta version of the twist, that it is a guy playing this VR version of DQ5, so they can't have someone going through the entire story for too long.
But the virus was completely out of left field and contributed nothing, if anything only distracted me because of questions such as, "Why is this here? Shouldn't somebody have noticed this and removed it from the official release? Wouldn't players complain about it? Or is Luca the first one to discover it?" It's incredibly odd.
I appreciated the sentimentality of it, and if I were to do the "It was a game twist" I think maybe after the ending scene from the game have the goggles lift up and have Luca walk out. Maybe then there can be a short epilogue as maybe he either goes home and starts to replay DQ5 on the famicom or something oike that as the Overture starts coming in foe the credits. I feel like then we could get the sentimental fanservice/nostalgia bait without some of the nonsense.

I watched the movie as soon as it got on Netflix. At that time, I never played DQV, but I played several other DQ games and I would absolutely consider myself a fan of the series. I freaking loved the movie that first time around! For me, it truly captured the feeling of playing a Dragon Quest game, something I wish more video game movies/TV shows did. The plot twist was corny as hell, but as a person who loves JRPGs, I was the choir that was being preached to, so I loved the message, no matter how hamfisted it was.
I ended up ordering a copy of the DS game thanks to the movie and I’ve been chipping away at it ever since. I just finished it and immediately went back to rewatch Your Story. I honestly think the movie works better if you haven’t played the game; now that I know the game plot firsthand, I see what they cut or changed to keep the runtime reasonable, whereas I had no issue filling in the blanks initially with my imagination knowing the general atmosphere of DQ. Still, I wholeheartedly enjoyed the visuals, what it did to try to be faithful to the source material, and god, I loved all the fight scenes so much! I loved the ending just as much on this second viewing. It really does just appeal to me as a fan of JRPGs and video games as a whole. It’s flawed, but I honestly think this is currently the best video game movie adaptation there is

It's a very great movie. I loved it so much, but the ending kinda ruin it for me :( this sounds like exaggerating but I can't sleep that night.
Unpopular opinion : I think DQ8 can be a good movie too

Watched this movie after playing builders, and yes I thought the story was strange and had no idea it was based on game 5. But I expected the ending since the ending of builders 2 talks about the world being an illusion and not until the end where you take the world back from the final boss of the game who also sits inside your friend's body just like that 9 tail monster sits inside Naruto...

I just watched this movie, and even though I love the DQ series, I've never played DQ V, nor did I know anything about it except that a character named Bianca exists. Yet I found the film thoroughly enjoyable!!
It felt a bit rushed at the beginning, but once you get into the heart of the story the pacing improves dramatically. And it's gorgeous the whole time!
And yes, there were still many shortcomings besides pacing - such as a lack of character development and a reliance on the audience having a basic familiarity with the DQ series - but based on sheer entertainment value alone I can recommend it to anyone who has even glimpsed a little blue blob!
    7.5/10
