Dogs and puppies naturally want to jump up on people for many reasons. This video covers how to condition your dog to be calm and offer a trained greeting behavior to the most common triggers that elicit jumping - the guests movement, eye contact, touch and voice.

I was thinking. Is it worth it? :) I still cant quite figure out how to change the color saturation and hue how Id like to. the program is so counter intuitive... Makes me want to pull out my hair :)

@@kikopup Well I'm 11 months late but thought I should mention it anyways. Your videos and information are absolutely invaluable to trainers like me regardless of whether or not they've got modern graphics. HOWEVER, for the general public I've found people tend to gravitate more towards "fun" videos rather than informative, so if the goal is to appeal to serious trainers AND the average dog owner, I think these animations are absolutely worth it.
This is the first video about training your dog not to jump where I feel like I can actually apply your teachings! Thank you! Excited to start with my dog though I might have to watch this a few more times haha
I haven't seen a breakdown like this before, Emily! Great video and great topic! Often in obedience classes addressing jumping is difficult to do in this much detail, so this could be a great video to refer to in segments for a step by step approach. Always love your content and your training approach!
Yes, I agree, you cant spend 11 mins talking in a class. Actually from working with a lot of reactive dogs, where they want to jump up and bite the person in the face, I break up the training similarly to this video but even more steps and carefully adding triggers together, like eye contact plus talking etc.

i have been looking everywhere to find a video that explains exactly this. Its honestly ridiculous how many stangers make kissy noises, whistle noises and try to get the attention of my dog. And it is so hard to even stop friends and family from greeting my puppy in a silly overly excited manner. I tried your method immediately after watching the video and she understood right away. Thank you so much! This so helpful. Would love to see more content about this topic :)
I know.... Some guests like my folks I know wont listen, so I leave my youngest boy in the bedroom for 5 minutes until my PARENTS have calmed down and when I let him out they are not excited to see him as much so it all goes much better.

Thank you! We've been trying to work on this with our pup, but only as guests arrive. As I'm sure you can guess, it hasn't been the most effective! Now I know what to do!
The good thing about it, is that most often guests are excited with saying hi to your dog and dont want to listen, so when you repeat making them say hi, LOL, the next time they come over they are not as excited about saying hi to the dog because they had to do it 20 times last time :)

Good tutorial, HOWEVER, I would absolutely love to watch a video of a dog being trained from the beginning! Your dogs already know how to behave. What were they like at the beginning of the training?
This is a fantastic video thankyou. I would love to see a video on getting dogs to calmly greet each other. I have 4 dogs and I usually take 2 out together but the process of reuniting them all is often chaotic!
I would suggest that you do the same thing, work with them when they have not been separated, so walk out the door come back, switch. Perhaps you tell them to all sit for treats, or all go to their beds etc.

Yes, my dogs go nuts for my mom. Halo and Wish started jumping, and so I thought it was good to make a video of them before I trained them. Can you see how excited Wish lol its like shes going to explode.
@@kikopup that dance at 7.47 made me laugh! Yeah Wish was trying so hard bless her. Like my youngest, 0-100 in 1 sec, cocker/collie n very impulsive plus reinforcement history for jumping. Been working on this with her a while, I need more guests than 1/week lol. Do you think putting jump on cue helps?
Just came at the right time have a lovely GSD but she gets herself into such a state when we have family over it's hard not to be upset with her so I will get right on to this my new year resolution thanks for such detailed lesson happy new year

A strange tip I learned about movement dogs especially with fluffy tails, trim them gently a bit, they will be less reactive for training, over a very long time you can let it grow out as they get used to this. Also do various touches in their sensitive spots. Sometimes the rear end hair can be trimmed too. Our cattle dog was super sensitive and finally she is understanding her tail and other sensory parts that she was bred for. Each dog is different with this and sometimes a life experience may have reinforced certain reactions. Love the video keep sharing. Prayers to the journey and find joy each day and blessings

Hey there Emily, thank you so much for your incredible videos. Once I'm more financially stable I'm going to become a member for sure ♡ I was just wondering if you had any videos on greetings for dogs who become reactive because of some people's impolite greeting techniques? My boy is starting to become very upset and reactive/snappy whenever someone (men and children in particular though) stares at him, leans over him or reaches down on him. He is a Border Terrier and a great little dog in all other aspects and this has only started recently after a couple of very impolite greetings from strangers. I will follow this protocol but wasn't sure if there was any other tips or videos you may have that would be helpful? Thank you so much for your time, I am positive that you have saved MANY dogs from rehoming, surrendering and euthanasia with your clear, concise and accessible training.

What kind of treats do you use? I am always concerned that so many treats will give my dog an upset stomach, so I think I don't work with her long enough.
The most frustrating thing i have with my dog is that he only behaves for me and my family is at fault. Even in public, he absolutely tunes me out when people have absolute zero respect of when i tell them to ask him to sit and just proceed to pet him even when he jumps up or just gets overexcited.
Same thing for my family when they try to take the him outside to go to the bathroom. He used to wait automatically without having to tell hin when the door is opened til others taught him he's allowed to run out without the "OK" cue
He only does it for me and i dont know how to get through to people to respect his rules and stop calling me "strict and mean" for having standards.
I am so sorry Dorienna, family are a million times harder to train than dogs. :) Maybe pretend you are making a video for youtube to train them what to do with your dog like I did. :)
Same here! I always tell my family not to roughy with my puppy or to stop kissing her in the mouth because she doesn’t like it, they keep doing it, and when I ask them to help train they do nothing.
I've always wondered, is Splash a show line border collie and Wish a working line? They're so different in appearance but both beautiful.
No actually, And they are related. Splash had a dad with the longer thicker coat and she inherited his coat. Actually Halo the one with blue eyes has showline dogs in his pedigree.

How would you train a proper greeting inside a fenced yard where they go to the front gate and jumping and excited before we even come in the gate and then they’re excited when we enter the gate? Like I have 2 girls and they both need better manners in the yard with me and others entering the yard and leaving it.

How long should I work on the first part of the video before trying out the next? My dog is large and very jumpy but once he gets a few treats for good behavior he starts to get too excited... for example, I tried doing the high pitched voice with him just now and he did well 5 times and then started trying to jump on me
If your dog gets more and more aroused from duration and the amount of treats being given I suggest working on a duration settle behavior- czcams.com/video/yr1olzgidMw/video.html as part of your training plan this will help teach your dog to be calm around food when its around for longer. and that each treat doesnt excite the dog.
Can you please make a video on transferring skills to your yard? My Golden is GREAT with me in our house and even out and about, but in the yard, he turns into wild dog! If I have a toy he wants that I have picked up from the yard (he can be across the yard -- we have .46 acre) and will be at my side in seconds and literally up in my face grabbing for the toy before I see him coming (I have a significant hearing loss so I frequently don't even hear him). Any advice? Thank you . (He is 1 year old now and we got him from a family that neglected him at almost 6 mos. old)
Very good! My rough collie has only been around other people twice, and the second time was not good at all. I did have tiny wins at times when she would very briefly pay attention to me because of treats. However, I'm really not around people most of the the time for more "real life" training involving good behavior when she is around other people.

Nah but seriously those are some good tips, I'm struggling abit with the greetings, I don't have a lot of chance to have a controlled greeting environment, but I do come home from work every day.
I started off with a super jumpy exited puppy, to a slightly more acceptable "welcome back" greeting where she lays down, but I'll implement a proper training session from now on! didn't think about it as a training session I just though "omg just let me take off my shoes brew some coffee then we'll play or what ever!"
What do you think about the interpretation of jumping as a dog body language as an request or even a threat which means: back up, stay away? I kind of think that saying that the dog gets "excited" and that's why he's jumping up is labelling because we can't really say what their emotions are. But the functions of the behaviour are different if they want the guest to back up and if they are really "social" and want to greet them. I'm just wondering if there's the danger of misinterpreting the dog's behaviour while they are jumping on guests.

Very easy to demonstrate with a dog that already knows how to do it. I’d like to see the same video done with a jumper.
I did find this to be very helpful but all of the dogs seemed to be well trained already. It is difficult to reinforce the positive behavior if the dog simply does not demonstrate it. It would be helpful to see how a disobedient dog is handled and redirected.
Good video, but if you are teaching people how to train a dog that jumps up, you should start the video by showing the dog jumping up, and then tell us what you the trainer should do at that point to STOP the jumping. the title of the video sets up the expectation that the focus of the video will be on STOPPING the undesireable behavior, not rewarding the desirable behavior, which is what most of the video shows. thanks!!!
With positive reinforcement training, the focus is on reinforcing the behavior you do want the dog to do while you use management and prevention in between training sessions and it is very important to never let the dog rehearse doing the undesirable behavior. The more an undesirable behavior is rehearsed the more likely it will happen again in the future, than if it was never rehearsed at all. If that makes sense? When some trainers use punishment they will show dogs doing the wrong behavior and then add punishment. Making the dog do the wrong behavior is not necessary and can be taking a step back in the training process when using positive reinforcement and differential reinforcement of an incompatible behavior.
