      I am so happy you are finding these videos useful. When I started doing them, I was thinking….no one cares about what you’re going thru, but I said to myself if I can just help one person, it’d be worth it…..so keep doing them. I really thought I was one of the few to need this, and had no idea just how many people out there were “just like me”. It has been so eye opening for me, and so heartwarming when someone takes the time to write a nice comment. I am humbled by replies like yours, and I feel so fortunate to be able to help people. I am delighted your spirits have been lifted. And I wish you a speedy recovery. Have you started walking and moving around yet? What were your symptoms that drove you to the ACDF? I’m always curious to learn about others.

      @@BarrysRecovery thank you so much for your response.
      I was challenged with neck issues off and on for more than 30 years. I’m an active individual and was always able to manage with physical therapy and sauna sessions, regular workouts etc. This last episode hit 2 years ago during the shutdown. I had a 42 year banking career and was working in a new office that was not ergonomically fit for me. Short staffed with very long hours and lots of typing. Due to the inability to get in to proper medical treatment as well as limited resources as far as the gym and PT, the pain just continued. Some shooting pain down the arm and hands, however that symptom eventually resolved. I did have chronic elbow pain that was manageable. My biggest issue was the pain and pressure on the neck and trapezius muscles. It would impact my mid and lower back at times. Eventually I did everything including physical therapy, acupuncture, PRP injections, mesenchymal cell injections and cervical epidural injections. After finally seeking opinions from 8 medical specialists I sought out the opinion of a highly recognized Neurosurgeon. We tried steroid packs and a few other options. Just like you said I was so unhappy and grumpy. My poor family - I retired early as I could no longer take the pressure on my neck from front loading my body. I did not have a restful night of sleep for those two years. I had severe cervical stenosis, degenerative disc disease, with bilateral nerve impingement of C5-C7.
      I had the surgery 3 weeks ago (ACDF C4-C7) today. And yes, I have been walking like a crazy person and often times probably too much. I do get the muscle spasms but as you said they go away 😃 lots of heat and ice, and I can sleep again. I try to avoid the muscle relaxers as they make me so groggy. I had a 2.5 to 3 hour surgery. Lots of bone spurs - the Surgeon said my discs were flattened to nothing & the bone spurs were like chards of glass against my nerves. I’m a small framed individual and my incision was a bit overwhelming at first. Lots of difficulty swallowing the first week, but was resolved with a steroid pack, ice and protein smoothies. I am sincere when I say how appreciative I am of your story. I also had said I’m sick of feeling this way and this is the best option left for me.
      It is a blessing to hear the success of others. Thank you again!

      @@jbaggettful so much of what you have gone through before, and after surgery mirrors, my experience as well. My bone spurs/osteophytes were so horrific that I could not even stand the weight of a towel on my head. It would cause a horrible burning sensation and shooting down both of my arms. The surgery truly has been magical for me. I’ll never be where I was when I was 18 again but at 59 I don’t expect that anyway. For my scar I found the arnica gel really helped reduce the swelling of that. Unlike you, I am a large person with a big heavy head lol. Keep healing and stay positive.

    I had the same surgery (c5-c7) 2 weeks ago now, but I have to wear the hard cervical collar for 4 weeks (I think😄)... But I am finally pain free, so I try to keep the complaining down to a minimum. 😁
    My dr said that I could remove it at night if I found it difficult to sleep in (more like impossible), but I'm worried that whatever movements I make while I'm unconscious will hinder the healing process?
    I heard/felt some "popping" sounds around c6/7 on the posterior side and that scared me some, but the surgeon said it's to be expected.
    It's comforting to know that others that've had the same surgery are having some of the same experiences I am. Having surgery on an area like this is scary enough as it is, so thanks so much for your videos! ❤️

      I had ACDF 12/21. Reason, extreme pain, exhaustion holding my head up . Due to MVA 20 years earlier with compressed fracture.
      I was told 18 months of recovery. Took me over 18 + months to feel somewhat better. The shoulder pain is still excruciating to this day more times than not. Now 2.5 years later, the pain is back. It is so difficult to sleep. I am up 3-4 ×'s a night due to neck pain. Had a MRI at the 2 years mark due to complaints that it is as bad as before surgery. Was told because of the surgery the disc below are over compensating and are now not in good condition. My surgery was right side. I have had neuropathy thru my face, which subsided but now my right side only, to my foot, neuropathy. I am so uncomfortable, even after taking prescription pain meds right along. My quality of life depends on how much pain I can tolerate that day. When out with friends I drive myself only because I can leave when I wish and always leave before others. I truly hope those of you who had or will have ACDF fair better than I did.

      Congrats on becoming a member of the ACDF Club. You’re now on your path to recovery. Hopefully you’re doing well, and knew what to expect. For me, the first few days were painkillers and muscle relaxers and then I was able to come off the painkillers and just use muscle relaxers. As soon as you have clearance to go outside and walk that can help greatly. The biggest challenge for me was everything was tight after doing the AC DF it took a while for all of the muscles and tendons to loosen up and adapt to their new positions so that was a bit uncomfortable, but not unbearable. I’m here if you need me for any questions. Also, on the description page is a complete list of things I used to help me recover, like the hydrocollator, massagers, and things like that.

    First: I apologize for this lengthy post; I don't have Facebook. Second: I appreciate these videos and have started watching them a 2nd time through. I had c5-c7 fused on Nov. 28th 2022, so 6 weeks post-op on Monday Jan. 9th. Like you, I had no hard collar, and initial reaction to surgery was very successful. By week 3, I had no pain, and that was even after being rear-ended 19 days post op (I wasn't driving and x-ray showed no damage to hardware or spine). My orthopedic informed me post-op that he would not be prescribing P.T., listen to my body, and no flexion/extension of neck along with no incline walks or lifting above 10# for three weeks. I am extremely physically fit (endurance participant and weight lifter), so I heeded instruction, but also began doing my own arm mobility movements while lying flat on the floor to keep muscles from tightening. By week 3, I successfully added in 3# weights. By week 4, I added 5# dumbells for things such as chest press while lying on the floor. Also, week 4, I did 10# leg extensions, sitting leg curls, and 20# leg press. NOT ONE MOMENT of discomfort during any part or after. Later that night at the grocery store, I accidently picked up a bag of heavy groceries, not thinking, and immediately put it down, as I had discomfort. Over the past two weeks since, I have had the base of neck and trapezius to shoulder pain that you spoke of having at week 6. It comes and goes, but I have found it worse when driving. Let me be clear, I'm very aware I pushed the envelope with physical activity, but I am hopeful that since I have returned to walks only during these past two weeks that it will correct itself. At what point did you begin to feel "normal" again (what week)? I realize we're all different and that I didn't help my situation, but I'm looking for hope, I guess. I'm 44, and it's hard to remember this sometimes : )
    I TRULY appreciate your time reading this and any time you might donate to responding to it. My doctor's office is closed today, but I will be requesting physical therapy on Monday to be initiated when the time is right; clearly, I have a hard-head :/
    And again - sorry for the long post!
    Be well, God bless!
    Michelle

    • @BarrysRecovery
      @BarrysRecovery  Před rokem +2

      No worries about the lengthy post. I started doing physical therapy week 12 post surgery. The biggest part of the recovery for me was stretching those muscles and ligaments out. My discs were so compressed that I probably gained a half an inch in height by the time they were done with the procedure. In retrospect, I wish I had checked my height before and after! I’m not a doctor, and I certainly don’t pretend to be one….with that said, if your procedure was like mine, and you have the plate and screws…. most likely,…you didn’t damage anything, the doctor performed. Instead, it is more likely that you overtaxed one of those tight muscles or ligaments. I would definitely have the doctor check it out and maybe shoot another x-ray just to make sure. If it’s muscular, follow whatever works for you for sore muscles. For me after surgery, it was muscle relaxers, moist, heat, gentle massage. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you👍🤞🙏

    • @michellew.7669
      @michellew.7669 Před rokem +1

      @Barrootz (ACDF surgery and recovery) Truly can't thank you enough for the time you took from your day to respond!🙏🏻 Like you, my discs were also so compressed that yes, I believe I gained an extra half inch - yay! My spinal cord was severely compressed due to protruding discs, to the point that I now have myelopathy. When you wrote that you incorporated stretching during recovery, was that done prior to P.T. enrollment? I'm so timid now to engage in any activity other than walking, but I have wanted to stretch since day one, post-op.
      Thanks again for your help! And yeah, I do have the plate with a total of six screws... and the Merderma was a skin burner for me, too ; )

    • @BarrysRecovery
      @BarrysRecovery  Před rokem +1

      @@michellew.7669 The stretching that I did was started at physical therapy. With that said, walking and relaxing those arms gives you a nice dynamic stretch, as everything warms up with just the movement of your arms …..it really stretches out that area pretty well. WRT the skin burn…I later found out that Maderma has some kind of onion extract in it that people can be sensitive to….maybe I was just using too much of it. I don’t know, but arnica gel worked the trick on getting the swelling of the scar down.

I have suffered from c6 ridiculopathy for several years, which had been bare able. However, being hit by a car riding my bike warranted an MRI and a neurosurgeon visit. The concern that was shared was that my degenerative disc issues will get worse and I run the risk of bruising my spinal cord. So, essentially the reason I would have the surgery would be more preventative. I am petrified and have been in a constant state of freaked out. Going for a second opinion in 2 weeks.

      I am 5 weeks post-op (C4-T1] and my voice is slow to come back to full strength. I sound pretty normal at 30-50% of my voice, but I sound like Mickey Mouse if I try to speak any louder. It's weird, but on bad allergy days when I use both of my nasal sprays, my voice sounds better and stronger.
      I still have trouble swallowing sometimes. I had to use Thick-It in liquids for a week after surgery. It took two more weeks for me to be able to drink directly from a glass or bottle instead of using a straw. I still have trouble swallowing certain foods - it feels like it gets stuck in the back of my throat.
      My surgeon said all of this is due to a nerve that gets irritated/stretched when the esophagus and trachea are moved out of the way during surgery. It makes sense because the skin under my skin on the right side (where he went in) is numb as well.

      @@Ms_Tex your description made me chuckle (Mickey Mouse 😂) but I know exactly what you’re talking about. A lot of valuable real estate in the neck area is pushed and pulled during the surgery and also being intubated doesn’t help the vocal cords. It sounds like you’re making progress and going through the healing process. This is all very encouraging as your voice is coming back and you know it will come back all the way because you said when you use nasal sprays it helps. This is all very encouraging. Jay, please keep me posted on your progress. I too struggle with dizziness and nausea. The ACDF definitely helped tremendously with my neck pain, hand issues, tingling in hands, etc. it did not resolve dizziness/nausea. Also, knees, hands,feet issues are typically lower in the spine (thoracic) so I’m not sure the ACDF Will resolve all of your issues but, could help with arms, hands, neck. Here is a link to an online chart that may help explain where nerves exit spine. millerchiropracticclinic.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/spinalnervechart.jpg also, if you don’t have a neurologist yet, I think it would be of great benefit to you. I am on some medication’s that help with my dizziness and nausea that are prescribed by the neurologist. Please stay in touch. I’m praying for you and sending good thoughts your way.

      It took me 6 years to get properly diagnosed. The doctors basically blew off my complaints my problem was I kept referring to how much pain was in my shoulder blade. I worked a 10hr shift at a terrible desk and felt it caused the arm/ hand pain.Wasted a lot of time seeing doctors who were uncaring and not experienced enough to recognize my condition. My blood pressure lately has been escalating because the pain is so high. I also have a herniated disc in my lumbar area that I've been tolerating for years. So between the sciatica and the on and off hip pain and the cervical pain daily life has been a vicious cycle. I've been taking pain meds but lately not getting that much relief from them. I'm very anxious to get this on the other side of this issue. I hope your surgery goes well and that you are relieved of all these issues you've experienced. I can totally sympathize it's very frustrating and it has made the last few years just miserable for me.

I had taken the last sample for my shift when I moved my ladder into the corner out of the way. I then tried to lift my arms to pick up the last sample and my arms seized. I had severe pain like an electric shock down my neck, shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. I could not move my arms for about 15 mins. Every time I lift or move (push) something I get the same symptoms. My neck feels stiff and swollen, with restricted movement right, left, up or down. I cannot walk heel to toe with my eyes closed and have difficulty doing this with my eyes open. I feel like I am drunk my head feels spaced out as if walking on the deck of a rocking boat. My little finger on my left hand goes off on its own when I try to hold my fingers out close together. I have two sore spots on my cervical spine. One just above the bottom of my shoulder blades and the other level with the top of my shoulders. The surgeon has suggested surgery and said the signals going up and down my spine are getting mixed up. However, he stressed that surgery will not fix the problems it will only prevent further deterioration. I have had the Motion study X-ray and CT scans today. I get the MRI on Sunday. Then my consult is booked for Tuesday. Hopefully we will know more then. Cheers.

      I guess it is all, depending on where the source of the pain is. If the source of your pain is muscular, it could actually be a little bit worse after the surgery as when they replace those discs, the spine is elongated, therefore stretching out the muscles even more. I went through a lot of that and I found the muscle relaxers helped me the most. Also warm, moist heat helped relax those muscles and I also practiced some somatic tracking to better understand and identify exactly where the pain was coming from. That enabled me to focus on relaxing that very specific area. See amzn.to/3BJ5dVV for info on somatic tracking. Great book.

    • @BarrysRecovery
      @BarrysRecovery  Před rokem +2

      Hi David, if you had the ACDF then everything is now locked in place in that area. They insert replacement discs and then a plate is put in with two screws in each vertebrae (at least that’s how they did it with me) I too did hear some different and new sounds. It took quite a while for all of that to settle down but now, at the one year mark, I can say I am totally pain-free and mostly noise free from my neck. I don’t know how old you are but I’m closing in on 60 and there is arthritis everywhere. So, when I do get a little binding or crackling, it’s usually just my body breaking up some adhesions … lol. I will be doing a one-year update soon. I have absolutely no regrets having this done. And I hope your noises quiet down soon 🙂

      Hi Cleveland Girl. Good observation. I’ve learned that much of the rotation aspect happens significantly higher. C1-C3. So when you have fusion done lower (like mine at 5-6-7)it actually doesn’t impact rotation that much. Also, once they put that plate and screws in there, nothing is moving anymore…. Thanks for reaching out. I have completely recovered from my surgery and have no regrets at all. I too had muscle spasms in the beginning. I think what you are experiencing is pretty normal. For the muscle spasms keep walking and working on relaxing and stretching out that upper back triangular area around the shoulder blades. If you look on my channel description, there are links to some products that may help you relax those muscles, including heat therapy and an economical massage device. I too had difficulty swallowing for a while. My biggest suggestion is to start with very small sips of fluid like water before you eat. Get those muscles used to working again and then take small bites of food. Part of the reason why people have swallowing issues is that there is a real lump in your throat Where they make the incision, they overlap those muscles when they sew them, and it takes a while for that lump to dissipate. it sounds like what you are experiencing are normal post surgical artifacts. My biggest suggestion is don’t panic, relax, and let your body continue to heal. I wish you healing and good health in the new year.

      Hi Leslie, the shoulder pain may be coming from the tightness in the neck, upper back. Remember they’ve stretched you out. Try hydrocollator to warm up that area with moist heat, also walking is great! Relax those arms and let them swing naturally. As for the swallowing, it took me a while for that to calm down. I was fine in the beginning, then after a number of weeks it popped up, and took a while to totally get back to normal. I suggest working those swallowing muscles. Frozen fruit pop, hard candy, small sips. It takes a while for it to calm down. You also may want to try Tylenol (if your ok taking it) to reduce some of the inflammation.

      The swallowing issue manifested a number of weeks after the surgery. It took about three weeks or so for it to subside. If it is taking longer don’t panic. Give yourself time. Whenever I would eat or drink I would start with very small sips or bites and it was almost as if once those muscles were loosened up then everything was OK. Eventually it got less and less and Totally disappeared. I would guess most people have problems for 3 to 6 weeks. Again if it’s longer than that don’t panic. Your body is still healing and those muscles will come back.
