  • TWiN explains how psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA, which are being explored for treating a wide range of neuropsychiatric diseases, reopen the social reward period for critical learning.

    Psilocybin has helped incredibly with many of my Long Covid symptoms. I started using them for PTSD and treatment resistant depression, for which they worked very well, and I noticed dramatic improvements in fatigue, headaches, muscle spasms/pain and most notably breathing problems.

    Psilocybin and lsd absolutely saved my life. I had severe depression and don't believe in ssri pharmacology. They aren't very effective, the brain adapts, side effects are pronounced, withdrawal is severe.
    I self medicated with Psilocybin and lsd and it always got me out of the mental hole and dusted me off with a new view on life. Obviously, i dont recommend folks self medicate when they are in distress, but there is something profoundly healing there.
    I dont use them anymore, its probably been 5 years or so. But they were pivotal to my current success in life.

    The careful approach to the subject is highly appreciated. It also fosters interesting philosophical questions which, of course, is a reason why psychedelics themselves are so interesting.

      This was not careful in the slightest. This program was about designer methamphetamine and battlefield dissociative anesthetics, not about psychedelics. Psychedelics were barely mentioned and the couple of times they were, they were mentioned in the same breath with designer methamphetamine which was mislabeled as a psychedelic. I have watched hundreds of shows on Microbe TV and this one was profoundly disappointing because it was so completely lacking understanding while trying to redefine the very field of psychedelic research to center around meth. This is easily the worst show I have watched out of hundreds here.

      I'm halfway through, and this is a program mostly about designer methamphetamine and dissociative anesthetics. It has barely mentioned actual psychedelics but mislabeled the designer speed and Special-K as such instead. This is very unfortunately great example of academia gone wrong. I'm fairly sure none of the participants has any first hand experience whatsoever with this topic. Aside from scheduling, there are decades of actual experience with these compounds in the music scene and there is already a huge base of knowledge, but academia dismisses it largely. I've done psychedelics over 100 times and I will never, ever get remotely close to MDMA. Never.

      @@jludo It's soul poison. I've got over 30 years of experience being around people who are on or have done MDMA. It leaves scars. I used to work rave parties in the 1990s where it was everywhere. It's soul poison. Mushrooms are excellent with 10,000 years of positive human history and they don't cause permanent brain damage like MDMA does. Acid is an amazing tool, but it's like a chef's knife and must be used very responsibly with complete understanding or you may make a bit of mess, but no brain damage there either. I'm extremely pro psychedelic, (I used to work for the Grateful Dead) but brain damaging designer speed is not a psychedelic and there has been a move to use it to replace real psychedelics in research and medical use. Say no to designer speed and yes to mushrooms every 6 months. I might try MDA once if I had a tested pure source but never MDMA.

      @@Peter_S_ MDMA is not "designer speed". That is an ignorant comment. It is also rather strange that you admit having no experience with the substance yet think you know it's effects. Also, the paper is open access and linked in the show notes. They tested the various substances separately and compared their effect. Clearly you did not understand the research. It seems you were triggered because you have a narrow understanding of the word psychedelic, instead of listening and learning. Also, you have no idea whether any of the panel has experience or not, instead you just assume and project.

    MDMA is designer speed which causes permanent brain damage, not a psychedelic. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic which causes permanent brain damage and not a psychedelic. The true definition of psychedelic revolves around tryptamines, not phenethylamines. The word was created by English psychiatrist Humphry Fortescue Osmond to describe LSD specifically. The synthesis of MDMA most used today was written by chemist Alexander Sasha Shulgin and published in the book PiHKAL.

    • @Costa_Conn
      @Costa_Conn Před 10 měsíci +10

      The neurotoxicity of MDMA is contentious for a number of reasons - the neurotoxicity is due to a metabolite, not MDMA, and the metabolism of MDMA in both monkeys and humans, unlike rats and mice, exhibits non-linear pharmacokinetics. Thus increasing doses, leads to an increasing half-life, potentially exacerbating toxicity. Probably more significant is the fact that the studies reporting neurotoxicity were based on depletion of serotonin in the CSF of rats, but this is not necessarily indicative of damage to neurons. PET studies on MDMA users who were abstinent for 20 weeks did not show less serotonin transporter binding levels. On top of these complications, in mice, MDMA neurotoxicity tends to produce dopaminergic, but not serotonergic neurotoxicity, while in rats the opposite seems to be true, and adding to the contentiousness neurotoxicity was observed at 10 times the equivalent dose for humans. Then you have the studies on regular MDMA users, which supported neurotoxicity via brain imaging, however MDMA users tend to be polydrug users making it impossible to implicate MDMA alone, and that is just one of the confounding factors of in the study.
      Clearly these issues significantly complicate any conclusion that MDMA is neurotoxic. Incidentally a few weeks ago, somewhat controversially, Australia became the first country to allow the use of MDMA and psilocybin for the treatment of PTSD and depression. Their is use will be regulated, and restricted to use by approved psychiatrists during therapy sessions.
      Apologies for the essay, but as you can see the question of MDMA's neurotoxicity is a tad contentious at the moment.
