Thank you so much for this info. I have a toddler and there have been times that I have looked up from my phone and he is just staring at me, waiting for me to react to what he tried to show me. This is very hard to admit but it’s the truth. Everywhere we go, people are always on phones. I don’t want to be a slave to my phone.
The future ramifications of what you just described are yet to be discovered. An entire generation of kids who know their parent's and other people's faces mainly as bent down and staring at a screen...is frightening. Thank you for admitting that you are guilty like so many others, myself included. We need to individually work to re-prioritize society to be face to face, in real time, in real life, all the time. Otherwise we risk never getting real life back. It could be gone forever.
My husband overheard this and now we're getting Light Phones and eliminating our smartphone addiction, and he is the LAST person I thought would be interested. So thank you for your inspiration.
I feel like God has been calling me to ditch the phone for a while. I had my long list of excuses, you addressed them all in this video. Thank you for sharing!
Was just telling my adult children who are in their early 20’s how thankful I am that we did not have this technology when they were young. We held off on getting smart phones way past most households in our suburbia community, and I am setting mine down more and more, longer and longer. Thank you for your efforts to shine a light on this social dilemma. It surprises me how often we are told of the mental health risks with smart phones and yet I see very few people trying to taper or stop their usage. When I tell my friends Im off my phone for a few days they all say “yeah, I need to do that too,” but sadly they do not.
I've been feeling HUGE conviction over this and told my husband I want to get a flip phone!!! Lisa, THANK YOU for this. The Lord used this in my life to push me to make the switch- praise Him!
I love how honest you are about your cell phone addiction. I had to break the cycle 2 years ago. It was hard admitting I didn’t have the self discipline to stay off my phone.
Omg when you said you thought you were being productive but you were actually just checking. This is exactly what I have found I am doing. I waste so much time checking things!
Thank you for sharing! I ordered the Light Phone II for myself the other day and I keep having surges of panic wash over me where I think, “what have I done??? My friends are going to forget about me!!!” This video was super reassuring and reminded me that all of the little inconveniences will be worth it. I’m trying to build a life that aligns with my values and I certainly don’t value my 3-4 hrs/day of screen time!
How has it gone for you? I ordered a light phone (hasn't arrive yet), sold my iPhone on ebay (haven't reset/shipped it yet) and I'm wondering what it's going to be like. I have a young 1 year old son. I keep thinking...I won't be able to take pictures of him. I can't do this, or that. But then I realize I won't even be tempted to be scrolling on anything, and I will just spend the time with him and the wife. Every single video I've seen of this minimalist thing says it was hard at first, but it ended up being such an improvement in so many areas of life.
@@fairandfree9824 Hey there! Thanks for reaching out ☺️ It’s been about a year and two months and I’m still living the dumbphone life, full-time. It’s going wonderfully and I genuinely never think about it anymore. Full disclosure- I switched from the LightPhone 2 to the Sunbeam Wireless Orchid because I felt super left out not receiving photos. I still have so much love for the LightPhone, though. Such a gorgeous device! Regarding photos, I bought a digital camera but I almost never take it anywhere with me. I look back on how many pictures I used to take and I get so overwhelmed! There will be lots of bumps in the road and moments of frustration but as you go along, you’ll start to figure out a system that works for you. It’s a different lifestyle for sure, but it’s totally worth it! You are making a great choice ☺️
First time commenting on your channels... A genuine "thank you" for trying to live intentionally! Perhaps, this is the only way we are able to remain as human beings. So, what you're doing is huge, and please keep sharing! 🙏
I am addicted to my smartphone (CZcams). I won't let myself have Instagram. Thanks Lisa for sharing about this struggle and your new solution. : ) I'm going to check it out.
I love this! Thank you for being honest and sharing this struggle. I struggle with "scrolling" and always having a podcast or video playing, always having a voice to hear. If you can do it with having the type of business you do, I definitely can as well! Thanks for always being a voice of inspiration Lisa!
I am so glad you confessed to being addicted to your smartphone!! I find myself doing the same things...you really made me think and take a step back. We need to learn to enjoy life's moments...thank you!!
I listened to this on spotify yesterday while crocheting but I wanted to come and leave a comment. Its really refreshing to see an influencer talk about smartphone/social media addiction ! I think a lot of influencer/content creator might have this addiction but brush it off because "well its my job, how can I stop looking at my phone if its how I work". It was interesting to see you being able to work even without that smartphone. I dont feel ready to downgrade because a smartphone is just soooo handy especially for the GPS ! Maybe I'll try leaving it in the drawer like you did :)
I truly appreciate this video! Thank you so very much for all you do! My husband and I have been discussing that "simple" life that creates so much peace and we are trying to accomplish that.
Thank you for sharing! I understand that freedom that comes from switching to a dumb phone. Me and my husband did it a few years ago and I remember this weird disconnected feeling at first that made me feel sad but then a freeing feeling and being able to be more present. We have smart phones again but thinking I might need to get rid of mine again. I do so many of the same things you do, checking my phone when walking upstairs or making breakfast for my kiddos when I should be present.
This is incredible. I’ve seriously cut back my phone usage since listening to your podcast about putting it away several months ago. BUT it’s exactly what you said - not enough and it just creeps back in. I told my husband that I want to do this and he was super excited. I think that tells you that I need to do it. 🤦🏻♀️
I’m so proud of you Lisa! I’ve been more mindful of how much time I’m spending on my phone. I’m so much more productive which is a blessing and I praise God for!!!
This was a great listen. My husband and I are looking into doing the same thing so it helps to hear the pros and cons. I think the inconveniences are worth it, I waste so much time on my phone. I will check out the light phone, I have never heard of it. And good luck with your last week or so of pregnancy. Praying for a safe and healthy delivery, mama, and baby. 💕
This is great. I’ve been thinking about getting a Wisephone by Techless. Heard about it through Matt Fradd’s recent videos about ditching his smartphone.
Wow, you are SUCH a good mama!!! Modeling how we want our kids to prioritize life- even when it is a life changing process!!! You inspired me…🤔🚫📱i’ve thought of this many times but thought it must be impossible in our day and time. I see now it is not!!! looking forward to a follow up video!
I got my first smart phone less than 2 years ago. I had a dumb phone with a keyboard before that and I sure miss it! Sadly it died. I struggled finding a dumb phone like that to replace it (they were all flip phones or were not compatible with our provider) and I ended up giving in on getting a smart phone. Ease of texting was the only reason I got a smart phone. I just could not imagine using a flip phone to text and I would feel disconnected from some of my family and friends if I couldn't text with ease. But, oh, it does suck you in, even though I am not on Instagram, Facebook, etc. Frankly, I barely utilize the potential for my phone since I prefer paper lists and planners, and already had the old style baby monitor, etc. Even then it still sucks me in. I am very intrigued by the phone you have and may have to switch. Thank you for sharing!
Love it! I've been thinking about the lite phone but similarly just need a few things that it doesn't allow! I'll definitely be dumbing down my smartphone!
Hey Lisa! I’m so glad you have tried this phone out. I have been without any social media for going on five years now and have been so peaceful without it♥️ Also, I have been following your channel for several months now and I have made so many changes for the better with my cooking since watching your videos. Thank you for all you share!
I’ve been so keen to switch to a light phone. I keep adding it to crt and then deleting it. This is the review I needed. As a mom myself I always feel the need to be connected , or googling stuff. Or giving my kids screen time access. I always has a reason to be on my phone. I needed to hear someone who is similar to me have this experience.
I have to say Lisa I am so happy you did this! My husband and I have also thought about getting rid of our phones. You brought up the bank app thing, which I had not even thought of that is a total deal breaker for us. We HAVE to have a phone for deposits. We bank at USAA, a military bank and they do not have ANY branches in our state so the only way we can deposit money is by check through the app or direct deposit. Also you are correct about forgetting we used to function before the conveniences we have now. We got rid of our microwave, and I also am relearning how we did things before having it. And finding food tasted better! 😂😁
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm glad you've found a solution that works for you. When I first became a published author, I felt the need for a smartphone to stay in touch with readers and email my publisher while traveling. I didn't take into account that I wouldn't always have Internet access say, on a road trip or in a remote location. I discovered, upon my return, the humbling fact that others could get along without missing me. Nowadays, not having a signal is just fine. I'd rather engage with the here and now than stare at a screen. I'm thinking of getting a light phone because it's so much cheaper. Although I don't struggle over my smartphone, I do need to practice more restraint with my PC. I'll take your video as a reminder to dock my screen time more.
I agree and appreciate what you have done. I haven’t done as much cutting back with my phone but I have been taking conscious breaks from my watch. It’s addicting too with immediate text, call and notifications for working out…you name it. I knew I needed to regulate myself and cut back. I feel better for it. Sometimes rather than needing to take pictures to capture every minute let’s me be more present in the moment and appreciate it. It’s a good thing for everyone. Kids and adults.
Awesome video! I have certainly been challenged with my smartphone addiction. I placed a pre-order for the Light Phone several months ago then canceled it but after several months I noticed that my smartphone addiction was very problematic (especially as a full time college student!) so I placed another order and will be receiving mine at the end of the month! I’m excited for the phone because of it’s unique design and simplicity but what is also a huge plus is the responsiveness of the light phone team! They are consistently improving the phone through updates and doing a great job of listening and communicating with their consumers. I’m super super excited!!
Wow, good for you! I wish my daughter would unplug herself from her phone. She’s literally on it all the time, neglecting her kids in the process. So sad to watch.
Yes, yes, yes. I resonate so much with this. Thank you a million times for you sharing your thoughts and experiences on detaching from your smartphone. I have been wanting to do this for well over a year and have kept telling my husband that I only need ONE friend to do it first so I can find out what it’s like before committing😂 Now I feel confident...I can totally do this. Thank you, Lisa!
I love this one so much, so helpful! I would love to hear if it ended up working over the long haul to stay with the light phone! I've been considering getting one for a long time.
Thank you for being so honest about this topic that mother’s struggle with. Discipline doesn’t always work with the way smartphones and social media’s are designed. What I can’t control I must eliminate. For my family and mental sake I am going to downgrade as well. Blessings and congrats on your beautiful baby 💕 Can you please share the type of camera you carry around? Thanks.
Lol Lisa...I traveled alone from Michigan to Oklahoma with an atlas, and printed out map quest 🤣 No phone. Cash only...I was traveling for work. What a scary thought as I look back. God and God alone took me safely.
my parents talk about how they lived life pre-phones…my dad would go hunting or fishing really late in the night; he would say he’d be back by midnight, and sometimes get delayed and not get back until 2 AM… my mom would just stay up praying he was okay! It’s hard for people my generation to imagine that, but I think in some ways it would be good for us!
Spent my entire adult life till age 45 this way, as did millions of others, and survived! Now in my 50s and I see no benefit of my smartphone. I'm ready to just use my desktop only. I want to be free again.
@@Ann-cx3dd do they even have pay phones anymore? lol. my dad works for a phone company and they uninstalled them all in our area! which is kind of bad for ppl that don’t have cell phones!
@@amandalinhitt I haven't seen a payphone in a long time.....but, I'm sure there are some somewhere. When I was still using a payphone, it was the 90s. ;) ;)
I’m convinced I started to gain weight and keep it on when I got my first iPhone. And over the years I’ve collected electronics cuz I like them, such as cameras, ebook readers, tablets, and computers. But my iPhone can do everything all those things can do. It’s more convenient to charge one device than 5. But because it can do so much, you can spend hours and hours on it without realizing it. That’s why I’m ditching and switching.
I got mine a few weeks ago. If I am going somewhere that I need directions, I turn on the hotspot and connect it to my old iPhone. I use it as a gps so only when going somewhere new. And if it's a special event I can use it for pictures but not have it connected to wifi. Otherwise it's put away at home and not used
Good for you! Been with a Nokia 6300 for three weeks. Keeping my smart phone for the apps and photos but keep it turned off. Much more productive at work with less distractions. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I never understand the directions problem. I've always used a Garmin in my car. It's about $100 and works better at it's satellite and doesn't rely on cell coverage.
Thank you for your honesty. Following along this year as you have talked about cell phone addiction has been really helpful to me. I relate to most of the things you are saying - going to safari instead, always checking SOMETHING, etc. I currently have my most time-sucking apps on time limits where only my husband has the code to override the limits. It is helping some. Thank you for this update.
Thanks. I’ve wanted to do this for a while. You listed almost all of my concerns, such as not having the CZcams channel to listen to while driving. Just one of my concerns. I also read all my library books on my iPhone. But! I check check check all day long, just like you did. I appreciate you bringing all this up. I’m still not sure what I’m going to do.
It's an awesome phone. I use it exclusively. The annoyances are real but I feel like they're reminders for me to slow down (which I need desperately LOL).
Before smart phones we used a GPS for travelling and my husband has a flip phone but he just uses it for calling me and emergencies. Not sure we can get a light phone in Canada.. personally I never use Instagram other than look a something someone sends me and don't have a blog either..maybe a good thing at my age....I am of baby boomer age so I use it more for messaging and texting friends and family and recipes mostly. Some valid points to ponder for sure.
I can't believe you're the most industrious woman I know and you struggled with smartphone addiction, as I do. 😂 What an amazing experiment. I think it's funny that the phone is $300 and it's so inconvenient (which is the point I understand). But I wonder if you could have the same amount of inconvenience cheaper with a flip phone.
For the past 3 years, I've had a smartphone that is not connected to the internet, so basically just text, talk and photos. It's inconvenient at times (especially when I'm lost and need directions) but overall, it's been fine. I do find that I'm more connected to my laptop now though. But it's fairly effective to just turn off the laptop and make it kind of inconvenient to use. xo
14:30 This might be a new feature, but they have Talk to text now. LPII Tip 1. Add yourself as Reminders. Send yourself messages with different lists, grocery, etc. You now have notes.
Sounds like something I have been praying about. Do you get this phone through your cell provider? I am someone who would want to get a decent camera and even a better laptop (mine went through a tornado and isn’t the best 😂) to be able to pay bills and such. Although my husband does have a smartphone I could use from time to time. Anyways, thank you for being open about all of this. I love that you desire more for your life ❤️
I have been wanting to get away from the cell phone addiction too and tried many of the things you've done and failed, but the method that finally worked for me was canceling our wifi and having just 4gb of data for my phone! All the things I was addicted too are online (youtube, Pinterest, Instagram, etc) and also use a lot of data. With my limited data I have enough for GPS and quick necessary uses online (and maybe a few videos at 144p). And then when we go somewhere with wifi (like the public library) I can download podcasts that I want to listen to. Just thought I'd put this out there for people who want an alternative option to stop the addiction.
Matt Fradd also ditched his smart phone (he has a youtube channel too). He went with the Wise Phone, and he seems to be very satisfied with it so far (3 months in at this point). He had the same struggles you experienced and wanted to really simplify his life. He got rid of his laptop, and he leaves his phone at work when he comes home for the weekend!
I would love to know... what do you do when you're nursing the baby when the house is quiet? I find nursing the baby late at night/early mornings when the other 3 are asleep is when I am on my smartphone the most. I also read my kindle at those times, but I'm wondering what you do?
Consider to switch soon when i can afford it :) I also Am Very sensitive to the impulses. After all these years and so much time spend watching a screen. Its time to go back to enjoy being with Myself, stimulating creativity. And actually finding out how i Am without this part of technology....
This has been so interesting to watch. Being of the generation that has had to learn to “allow” my iPhone to take over certain tasks and make them easier for me, which is often adding frustration, I can totally relate! It’s everything I experience in reverse! Does that make sense?
I have most of my apps on my tablet. I block out time in the early morning and late afternoon to get work done on my tablet. I use my phone to listen vlogs, music, podcasts, and books while i do things during the day. I made my important contacts have specific ringtones so that I while i am getting things done, i can know if its my mom or husband and answer immediately or my bestie who knows my time blocks for calls and texts... We text each other whenever convenient and then we each reply when convenient been doing this for a decade! Or if its a call i dont need to answer.
Does this phone receive larger texts (from people who type way too much on the smart phone)? What about receiving photo texts? I tried switching back to a flip phone but had so much trouble with the texting. This phone sounds great!!!!! I just need something that can’t handle long texts.
Will any cell phone company provide service? Does it work on 4G or 5G? How was the actual service/quality during a phone call ? One thumbs up or two? Thanks for sharing!
I’m considering this phone but I am concerned about some of its flaws when I live in Alaska with no family in this state and my husband rarely home. I only have Facebook and CZcams but ever since I got AirPods I constantly listen to podcasts.
I use my iPad for most apps. I don’t carry it around with me or take it out of the house (except for overnight trips). I do use my Smartphone a lot for photography, but taken a lot of apps off it
You are such an inspiration. Really not sure how you do it all and keep such a great composure. Do you keep a sabbath day? and if so how do you prepare? thank you
I can’t get ANYTHING done with my phone! Idk how you and others even do it! I had to delete all social media apps on my phone and I’m fasting social media. It was just consuming my mind and time and make me not mentally present with my family. I really don’t know how people get anything done because my house was a mess!
If you have an iPhone you can always set it up app restrictions. Decide which apps you want then restrict everything else. Get your partner or friend to set up a pass code for the restrictions that only they know.
I just ordered the paper shoot camera which is super tiny and doesn’t have a screen. I’m excited to pair that with the light phone that I’m 90% sure I’m getting

This phone is life changing and can help you break the Internet Smartphone addiction - it's an amazing device !!
Didn you get it ?
@@symonegreen7493 Yep! Have had it for a few months now and love it!
Me and my husband just got light phones and its been a learning curve but very interesting. Thank you for the information!
Thank you for being so honest about this topic that mother’s struggle with. Discipline doesn’t always work with the way smartphones and social media’s are designed.
What I can’t control I must eliminate.
For my family and mental sake I am going to downgrade as well. Blessings and congrats on your beautiful baby 💕
Can you please share the type of camera you carry around? Thanks.
I feel like we could use another update one year later!
Lol Lisa...I traveled alone from Michigan to Oklahoma with an atlas, and printed out map quest 🤣 No phone. Cash only...I was traveling for work. What a scary thought as I look back. God and God alone took me safely.
I remember those days! And, I only used a pay phone and refused to get a cell phone for FOREVER!
my parents talk about how they lived life pre-phones…my dad would go hunting or fishing really late in the night; he would say he’d be back by midnight, and sometimes get delayed and not get back until 2 AM… my mom would just stay up praying he was okay!
Otherwise it's put away at home and not used
Thank you for sharing! I’m going to look into this! Phone addiction is such a problem for me. I appreciate your vulnerability, and sharing this.
You are speaking to exactly what is on so many peoples minds (myself included).....so glad you shared this! 🧡
Good for you! Been with a Nokia 6300 for three weeks. Keeping my smart phone for the apps and photos but keep it turned off. Much more productive at work with less distractions. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Talk to text is now available :)
I never understand the directions problem. I've always used a Garmin in my car. It's about $100 and works better at it's satellite and doesn't rely on cell coverage.
Would love to hear an update on this!
Thank you for this! This video finally got me to purchase the light phone!
This resonates so much with me!!! Do you have update on how it's going now?
You go girl!! My hubby should do this! I think that it seems like such a good fit for u!!
You can use Bluestacks to use any mobile apps you need on your computer. They will work identically to your phone as Bluestacks emulates Android.
We still have actual GPS's in each vehicle. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
Oh yeah there's that! See, I forget these things even exist!
Do updates still come out for new roads? This is my main concern
@@mollyl8704 You can go online and update them.
Alright, I'm quitting social media now!
I love that you desire more for your life ❤️
No you would have to get it from there site
Excellent Lisa. So refreshing.
Yes, struggle a lot with having my phone with me. Thanks for sharing this.
Lisa, please give an update!
I am planning on getting the Orchid phone from Sunbeam wireless. It was between that and the Light Phone.
Self discipline in some areas? I feel like your whole life is self discipline. Idk how it couldn't be with how successful you are 😅
Consider to switch soon when i can afford it :) I also Am Very sensitive to the impulses. After all these years and so much time spend watching a screen. Its time to go back to enjoy being with Myself, stimulating creativity. And actually finding out how i Am without this part of technology....
Hello! Are you still using and loving the light phone? This is 2 years old
This has been so interesting to watch. Being of the generation that has had to learn to “allow” my iPhone to take over certain tasks and make them easier for me, which is often adding frustration, I can totally relate! It’s everything I experience in reverse! Does that make sense?
Family life us being so effected . The children also. What a game changer.
I feel you and struggle hard not checking my phone. I took all the social media apps off my phone trying to overcome the addiction.
Loved your candid honesty in this video💗
Does this phone receive larger texts (from people who type way too much on the smart phone)? What about receiving photo texts?
I tried switching back to a flip phone but had so much trouble with the texting. This phone sounds great!!!!! I just need something that can’t handle long texts.
So glad I found this video. I've been looking for alternatives to a smart phone. I almost bought a flip phone a few months ago 😂🙈
Will any cell phone company provide service? Does it work on 4G or 5G? How was the actual service/quality during a phone call ? One thumbs up or two? Thanks for sharing!
I love this content so much!
I'm really wanting to get one. It ironically is more money than I've ever paid on a phone but currently I have an iPhone 7.
We definitely need a notes app on the light phone 2.
I’m considering this phone but I am concerned about some of its flaws when I live in Alaska with no family in this state and my husband rarely home. I only have Facebook and CZcams but ever since I got AirPods I constantly listen to podcasts.
As a mum: I have really been considering this too. I'll just have to remember to take a camera out!
You might want a Garmin for your car. It runs off satellite
I use my iPad for most apps. I don’t carry it around with me or take it out of the house (except for overnight trips). I do use my Smartphone a lot for photography, but taken a lot of apps off it
YES SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS
Thank you for sharing! Mine arrives today. Are you still using yours today?
I feel the same way, good for you. I’ve thought of getting the iWatch as a phone replacement.
I just ordered the paper shoot camera which is super tiny and doesn’t have a screen. I’m excited to pair that with the light phone that I’m 90% sure I’m getting
2 years later are you still using it?
Hey Lisa! I’m curious if you’re still using this and what your thoughts are now that so much time has passed!
