To clarify, the prosecution's (extremely odd) case was that the '-uh' sound at the end of each of Halford's lines was what contained the subliminal message. Their lawyers used electronic equipment to distort this intonation to something approximating the words 'Do it', which was apparently enough to make those two lads want to commit suicide. Halford was undoubtedly the star of the court case when he pointed out that it would be counter-productive for the band to encourage their fans to kill themselves and that if JP were even capable of including subliminal messages in their songs, the message would be 'Buy more of our records'.

Metal being a scapegoat once again. I wonder what would happen if they found a serial killer who was into "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies and killed chicks by drowning them in molten sugar and impaled them on a stick, inspired by "you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you". Come on!
Well, my mother thought Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells was about blue meth until I explained to her that there is no such thing as blue meth, they just made it up for the show. Which leads me to wonder now if she thinks every song with the word "blue" in the title is about blue meth. Interestingly, my mother used to like to tell me that the real estate agent who sold my parents the house I was living in that Tommy James had grown up in the house. She was not impressed.
@Hani Farjo As far as I'm aware, when cases are dismissed it's because they have no legal grounds, not because the judge personally finds it ridiculous. A case can still be valid enough for a trial whilst also being really stupid.

@etru6 And you believe that denying a historical event occurred should land an 80 year old woman in prison? Are there any other historical events we aren't allowed to question? Genghis Khan killed 40 million people. Communists killed 100 million all over the world. Are we allowed to have views on those events or is it just the Holocaust? Why is that event special? There have been countless horrible genocides in human history.
Stained Class was their best album imo. It was the only Priest album I upgraded to CD during my "CD upgrade period" but I still got their other stuff on cassette.
The part in the trial when they play the line from Exciter backward - y'know, " Stand by for exciter, salvation is his task" then backward the line sounds like " I asked for a peppermint, I asked her to get one." Well, I recorded that backward phrase part off the television onto a cassette tape, and played that segment of the tape backward on my old Fostex four track, and sure enough, that, "I asked for a peppermint" backward line plays perfectly in pitch as "stand by for exciter, salvation is his task." when the tape was reversed. It was wild!

"Is your breath technique a subliminal message for people to kill themselves?" "Absolutely not. If I want to kill someone with my breath, I go for a mix of garlic, cognac, onions, tuna and curry, and then I sing _Take My Breath Away_ straight in their face. That usually does it and it leaves no traces either...."
My band played in Phoenix Arizona for a week a few times in 1986 and Rob Halford hung out with us at the club all night every night for the entire week playing video games with us in between sets and sitting in during sets. It was awesome. He was one of us for a week. The club was called Rockers and had a huge stage and big PA. Great times.
Imagine analyzing a singer's way of singing and trying to find highly thought-out reasons for every little unique vocal tic or phrasing. I wanna hear Jonathan Davis or David Draiman on the witness stand answering questions like this over stuff from their songs.
At this time it was popular to blame artists especially Heavy Metal bands. I remember this and was nervous they would lose in court but the outcome would be ridiculous if they did lose. BTW Great voice Rob!
I remember when this case was in the news back in '86. It was here then gone as I recall. Now the parents (who were lousy), were just looking for a quick cash in. I watched "Dreamer Deciever", where this clip was taken from, and now as an adult, I can clearly tell it was a result of bad parenting (and neglect). I was relieved that JP was cleared. What makes little to no sense, is that the boy who survived shooting himself (and lost trying to sue), found a way to commit suicide a year or two later and overdosed on pain meds. So, all in all, the youth was determined to end his own life (with or without a court settlement). Also, it was mentioned that the two boys did a lot of drugs, so that will impair one's viewpoints on life, but a lot of folks are very quick to excuse that and "blame it on the music" crap because there will always be negative things going on that people probably weren't aware of at this time. Abuse was once a very taboo topic even by the mid-1980's standards.

It's nice that schizophrenics are allowed to comment here too.
the judge was remembering that he left his" TYPE O NEG " CD on the front passenger seat of his car....!!! OH SHIT>>!!
This was in Reno Nv ...i lived there at the time....the best part of this was when it was over they opened there Painkiller Tour 2 weeks after this trial in Reno!!! Talk about mind blowing!!!
Metal being a scapegoat once again. I wonder what would happen if they found a serial killer who was into "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies and killed chicks by drowning them in molten sugar and impaled them on a stick, inspired by "you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you". Come on!
Don't give me ideas
Well, my mother thought Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells was about blue meth until I explained to her that there is no such thing as blue meth, they just made it up for the show. Which leads me to wonder now if she thinks every song with the word "blue" in the title is about blue meth. Interestingly, my mother used to like to tell me that the real estate agent who sold my parents the house I was living in that Tommy James had grown up in the house. She was not impressed.
There was Waaay too much thought put into this post lol.
@@kalibhakta8640 flashbacks to baby blue playing at the end of breaking bad
Well that would be metal af
I thought for being in a court room he had it together pretty good.
The Judge looks like he realizes this is an absurd trial.
@Hani Farjo As far as I'm aware, when cases are dismissed it's because they have no legal grounds, not because the judge personally finds it ridiculous. A case can still be valid enough for a trial whilst also being really stupid.
Why is that not the best thing ever sung? The way he looked up was priceless.
“There I was completely wasted, and out of work and down!”
0:30 go to law school they said. Judge is respected position they said
class of 86. They put priests feet to the Flames couldn't believe it when I saw it
This reminds me of when Dee Snider went in front of Congress, he embarrassed the hell out of them. They were expecting a low iq individual.
They were wrong.🤘🤘
Watch his deposition ... he eats Al Gore for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
His voice is even godly in a courtroom. 🤘🏻
It would have been awesome if he really did throw in little "do it" there.
Dude I would have been rolling. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rob Halford is wisely man
He made music to please their fans in right way
And this trial is prove that the
"Metal Gods" can handle it!
*I bet you get this in your recommendation for Judas Priest's listener, right?!*
This trial was a joke.
ooops!......i thought rob said "buy it!" (and i did!)
Judge: I hope he does “Screaming for Vengeance”
Seen him live once ,it was 3 weeks ago,we were in Los Angeles and a limo pulled up,it wasn't Rob Halford but someone else,I looked at my phone,it was a CZcams notification about Judas Priest .
I wonder if Nicky minaj was sued and the judge would tell her to "sing" one of her songs.....how would she do it without auto tune?
Luis Arciniega Ha! Absolutely, she’d freakin blow! And that’s really tellin bout the state of music nowadays
Well, when she and Cardi tell you directly how to be a whore, no one bats an eye!
Ha! Well said
You sound just like the parents in this court case who were trying to vilify metal music. That is to say, you sound like an out-of-touch dumbass.
I would expect much better from a Philosophy Tube subscriber, but it appears that I am mistaken.
The fact that this was sent to court is ludicrous!
He was basically flexing, but imagine if he went all out! Fkn deadly lol
Only in America...

Yeah. Look who they elected as president. What a disaster!!
@@kpax45 meanwhile there are people rotting in jail in the European Union for having the wrong views on WWII... In other words you are a clueless NPC.

He is a god, the God of metal.
Stained Class was their best album imo. It was the only Priest album I upgraded to CD during my "CD upgrade period" but I still got their other stuff on cassette.
the judge was melting to Halfords voice
Amo a este hombre, no se merecía la humillación pública
*sings screaming for vengeance*
Judge: EVVY FUKKIN METAL AMMIRITE??!?
0:33 hummm he's good I think I'll start listening to Judas Priest
The part in the trial when they play the line from Exciter backward - y'know, " Stand by for exciter, salvation is his task" then backward the line sounds like " I asked for a peppermint, I asked her to get one." Well, I recorded that backward phrase part off the television onto a cassette tape, and played that segment of the tape backward on my old Fostex four track, and sure enough, that, "I asked for a peppermint" backward line plays perfectly in pitch as "stand by for exciter, salvation is his task." when the tape was reversed. It was wild!
@robert proctor You are sooo full of shit. Just admit that you hate Obama because he was a black, succesful, and articulate. Your crazy Reptilian Freemason Zionist Satanism etc etc nonstop bullshit conspiracy theories is all just deep seated racist paranoia. By the way, Jesus was a liberal.
Been listening to JP since the 70s the first JP album was Rock a Rolla, then Sad Wings of Destiny and so on but hey I'm 60 years old and still alive Rocking and Rolling ✊🏼🤘🏼✌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent vocals, how can his breathing whilst singing be a subliminal message ?
'Murica
It's a cool way to end a phrase, it's not breathing. This is musical style. Musicians can make unnecessary sounds all day and not have to defend their choices to the Gestapo.
Wow ... even if he is singing in court solo it sounds genius.
If the background subject matter wasn't so serious and tragic, this scenario would be described as pythonesque.
Imagine analyzing a singer's way of singing and trying to find highly thought-out reasons for every little unique vocal tic or phrasing. I wanna hear Jonathan Davis or David Draiman on the witness stand answering questions like this over stuff from their songs.
Came here for the comments and y’all did not disappoint 🤣
I thought for being in court room Rob had it together pretty good, I thought he's a neat guy.
Rob told me to DO IT and I haven't stopped. Rock on, Rob!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! SHOWED THAT JUDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The judge is like "should I ask for Painkiller"?
Painkiller wasn't yet released, trial was in the beginning of 1990
Judge: "Okay, I need a few more lines and than bring in the rest of the band and play the whole set list. Better be safe than sorry."
So apparently it was this moment that made the judge realize how ridiculous the case is
