    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jackson (Barry Pepper) once again displays his sniper skills, until a tank takes aim at his bell tower.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944.

I saw this at the cinema when it came out and I remember thinking the same thing - the director wasn't scared to leave in messy details that someone else would have cut out. If you guys are wondering why he kept on missing in the end, I found this on reddit: "In Saving Private Ryan [1998], Jackson uses two scopes (Ureti 8x scope on the left, M73B 2.5x scope on the right) and swaps between them regularly. This results in his Ureti 8x being 'unzeroed', which causes It to be inaccurate, resulting in Jackson missing a lot of his shots later on."

Fun fact: Jackson wasn’t a sniper. He was a designated marksman. They’re an integral (organic) part of a fire team/unit. Snipers are typically SpecOps operators who work solo or with a secondary colleague; a spotter if you will.

Designated marksmen are used to supplement a squad by providing accurate fire on the enemy from distances out to a max distance of 1,800-1,950’ away. Usually there’s a need for repeated shots. Because of that, the DM is usually equipped with a scoped semi-automatic rifle called a designated marksman rifle (DMR). Similar to snipers, DMs are trained in scouting and precise shooting, but unlike the more specialized "true" sniper (who often operate independently), they operate as an intrinsic part of an infantry fireteam and are tasked to lay down accurate support fire at valuable targets as per tactical necessity, thus extending the reach of the fireteam.

But the former operates as a part of a squad alongside other infantry soldiers while the latter only operates alone or with another sniper (in such case, the other sniper is given a role called 'spotter'.) Role of a sniper usually is to eliminate high profile targets or to suppress enemy movement by pushing them into covers. But DM are given more diverse roles as they are often forced to roll with the punches in rapidly changing situation in battlefield.

Shoot it? He just knew he was doomed and immediately yelled to his friend to get down. Was this comment meant for a different clip or something? Because none of what you said happened in this one
