I have been EV charging for road trips since 2017. The undisputed champion on charging is Tesla. It’s plug-N-charge. The plug reads who owns the vehicle and bills them. I don’t want a credit card reader that can fail. A charger should be able to read the identity of the vehicle across all brands. As backup, our cellphone could also activate the charge. There’s no need for big displays or buttons, potentially failing, on the charger kiosk. Do like Tesla and use the KISS principle.

I like the idea of making EV charging accessible to those who want to use credit cards IN ADDITION TO plug-N-charge and other payment methods. Not everybody or every situation allows for use of an account with payment methods attached to it.

@@EVResource Credit cards are so old school and the readers are one more item to fail. A tiny keychain RFID card like ChargePoint uses or a phone app is all you need if plug N charge isn’t available. Everyone has a phone including most 11 year old children.

I don’t disagree that there are better methods. And generally I’d agree that complexity should be avoided. For the early adopters and early majority, what you mention has been easier for them to use. But for the majority and later parts of the adoption curve, I believe that credit cards are still a very relevant payment method.
Isn’t it good to have options that will work for more people? Meet them where they are?
If we truly want to have the adoption of electric vehicles take place as quickly as possible, doesn’t it make sense to limit the amount of “new things” people need to learn?
