What if Luke never turned himself over to Vader?

What if instead of confronting Vader, Luke stayed with Han and Leia to help destroy the Shield Generator protecting the Death Star? Would things have played out the same with the Rebels destroying the Death Star or would his absence in the Throne Room doom the Alliance?

Everything you said made sense to me, as far as my understanding of canon. Although I was 6 when I first saw the Star Wars in 1978. Over the decades, I found drawn more to SWTOR as I found the storyline more in keeping with today's military/political world reality.
