  • Its time for another Volkswagen bug build! In this video, I go through what it takes to lift the rear of one of these cars through torsion indexing. Stay tuned for the next video where I build a front beam to class 11 race specifications!

    This was very well done. When you run into an obstacle and you pause and return, you save a lot of time that might not be as critical as talking through what you did to overcome the problems you run into along the way. Great quality, great resolution, great articulation of the details of the project at hand. Excellent video production!!!

    Awesome video. I'm looking to get a 68+ Beetle to slowly convert to Class 11 style for daily driving and casual forest service road exploration. Nothing high speed or crazy, just enough to be both useful and fun. Unless of course I get my hands on one that's already in that style. I'd rather not have full on baja since the engine is more exposed to elements, thieves, and vandals.

    I use flush fitting rather almost flush fitting tire valves they have a cap with an 'O' ring to lock them on using a coin or flat head screwdriver I have never lost a cap, and never knocked a valve out again, better than welding a hoop to protect the rubber ones as this makes it hard to get the airline on. Going to enjoy this build if it as good as your truck builds it will be a nice bug.

Seriously may have only raised up 1/4" if we're lucky. I'm thinking we should have gone as many as 3 notches. Any thoughts? Thanks for this video, we've been waiting for years for a quality explanation.

    Thanks for the chart. I want a full 3' lift on my baja. I understand the will be an issue with the shock mount ( shock length ) and the stopper lug and bottom rear bolt . Intending to move the lower shock mount, as it would hit the ground anyway and probably get bent, allowing a refit of standard length shock. not sure if its a good idea to notch the spring plate , although this would be easier than the alternative. Seeking advise here.

    I lifted my 71 squareback… I got really good at changing out cv axles as the increased angle is hell on them. At the time there wasn’t any modified axle configuration to solve the issue. Good luck! And you might want to keep a built up axle or two in your toolbox

    I have seen where guys have ground that lip away for more droop then strapped it before the shocks over extend and the drive shafts don't pop out or fall apart. Is this a useful mod to do, as I am hunting for a bug with a Baja panel kit, I want an early kit as I am not a fan of those you can buy now, I Know the fibreglass may be on it's way out, but I just prefer the early one's look.
    How come you are not doing your red one as you started it and was looking good.

    • @WingsWorldChannel
      @WingsWorldChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      That is a mod that people do! If I build the whole car to race class 11 I will do this. For now, just rotating the rear torsions and installing a replacement shock. I ended up selling the red bug for a few reasons, mostly because of some of the features that make the 69-70 bugs more suitable for racing.

  • @aaroncote6750
    @aaroncote6750 Před 3 lety

    Hi guys, would this still work if I need to get the rear fenders from rubbing the tires when people are in it? I replaced the rear shocks with new Sach’s shocks and while they ride nice and sits well when empty, they bottom out on the tires instead of the stop when anyone’s in it. The fronts are fine. Wish someone had taller stops available lol. What sucks is that the tire/fender rear clearance is about 3 inches before anyone gets in the car. So I’m thinking it’s either raise both sides 1 spline or get coil rear shocks so I can adjust where it bottoms out (to get it above the tires). This is definitely cheaper but not sure if it will work, and if the shock will just travel farther and still bottom out. Ideas?

    • @dustymojave
      @dustymojave Před 2 lety

      Coil shocks DO NOT change where the suspension stops. If the tires rub when you hit a bump, they will still rub if you "lift" it and you hit a bump. Try tires and or wheels that aren't so wide or tall that they rub the fenders. If the tires just rub the rolled edge of the fender, you can flatten that like class 11 racers do. Hammer and dolly if you're not worried about the paint, or Eastwood sells a tool for that. If you want to keep wider tires, there are wider than stock fiberglass fenders available.

    I don’t get that chart? 2 inch lift= +9,-9? On the video you moved it one spline to gain quite a bit of lift! At least two inches. You opened your hand in the gap! So, I want approximately two inch lift. Move it one spline, right?

    • @WingsWorldChannel
      @WingsWorldChannel  Před 3 lety +3

      yes! The +9 -9 means that you need to rotate the inner spline 9 splines and the outter 9 splines the other way. Since there are a different number of splines on the inner and outter sides of the torsion bar, this will lead to a ride height change. If you look one spot down on that chart, you see that if you rotate just the outter spline +1 (what I did in the video) you will get a ride height change of 2.17". I hope this makes sense!
