Hi Dave, I just saw your Rammstein's ,Sonne' song analysis, and it was excellent! It gave me more insight about that song. I think you have norrowed down many of the possible interpretations to these 2 scenarios. Maybe it is a mixture of both (!). Idk..
I also like to point out the presence in that video of a no-leaf tree with a single apple hanging during Snow White's "burial". This could have something to do with the "wisdom tree (or tree of knowledge)" and the reason (represented by the apple) why Adam and Eve were expelled from paradise.
Anyways, thanks again for the awesome job you always do.

I've always thought Engel referenced sex work or maybe more generally speaking celebrity. One is recognized as an exploitable commodity and taken away to serve as that commodity and must hold to that identity even as it destroys them, because the alternative is even worse.

I've heard the story of a woman who went abroad after promises of a good job and money for her family. However she ended up lied to and forced into prostitution. She did get paid though and did send her daughters (who were back home) some money. But they would never see their mother again, and they believed she was happy and having a job she liked. This song always reminds me of stories like these.

Great analysis of the song and video! I appreciate your music taste, too! \m/
Another fun fact: the music video was heavily inspired by the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn". That's why in the club is this gorgeous stripper-lady who dances with a snake, spills Whiskey over her leg and lets Flake (who looks a bit like Quentin Tarantino's character from the movie in the video) lick it off her toes. Also the band members commented in a making-of-video that was later filmed, that they wouldn't do the video now as they did it back then: that half of the band was on stage and the other half in the audience. To them, that didn't work. They'd have done it either one way or the other, not a mixture of both.
Also, the art director of this music video was Philipp Stölzl, who is now a famous movie-, music-video-, tv-spot- and opera-director. He would later direct the videos for Rammstein's "Du Hast", "Stripped" and "Du Riechst So Gut", and videos for bands and artists like Evanescence, Madonna, Joachim Witt, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Die Ärzte, Garbage, Die Toten Hosen and Anastacia. Famous movies by him are "Goethe!" (2010; international title: "Young Goethe in love"), "Der Medicus" (2012; international title: "The Physician") and the 2016 TV-reboot of the "Winnetou"-films.

In an interview, Till Lindemann said that religion is unimportant. In my opinion, he questions in this song the idea that those who lead a pious life will be angels (while all the others will be thrown into the purgatory), and he questions if living as an angel is desirable.

I love “Spring”. To me it’s about caring about what others think of you, their opinions and expectations of you. People come to look at a man they think is jumping, so lyrics like “Enttaüsch mich nicht” (don’t disappoint me!) tell us that the man must jump and sacrifice his life simply so that he can fulfill the crowd’s wishes and “redeem himself”

Just a theory. I think the song points to the early medieval Christian conceptions of spirits (or "angels" today, a much more modern concept). In a nutshell, the belief was that spirits live in the eternal celestial realms (aka seven heavens) clinging to celestial bodies (planets and stars) and being in the presence of God but otherwise having no personification (i.e., very "alone"). They explained human life as requiring the fall of a spirit from a timeless celestial realm into a body, which allows the spirit, now embodied, to live a life and, depending on how that life was lived, determine if they can ascend back and where they ascend to (which of the seven heavens, each associated with different personalities or virtues). Wishing to not ascend at all was a common reflection on the dreary (and "angst" inducing) prospect of losing one's individuality and free will (a sentiment that later morphed into the famous "non serviam" proclamation by Satan). They also believed that the powerful light from the Sun was meant to hide the heavens from view but that at night, when the Earth casts a shadow onto the celestial realms, we briefly get to see them.
This all lines up pretty well (even the "zombie kids", since spirits were depicted as both very naive yet undead / immortal), and it's not so far fetched since (1) anyone with a reasonably strong interest in literature or old myths would be very familiar with all of what I described, and (2) drawing from early medieval or pagan mythology is a very common thing in heavy metal.

I learned German by listening to Rammstein. I always thought German was so poetic, but then I found this video and you claim that some of the lines in this song are archaic and would sound weird in modern German, and in fact are INTENDED to sound poetic. Does that mean I've gotten German completely wrong for the past 15 years? And yes, I have heard other German singers, and honestly I think they sound just as poetic. Honestly, to me, even an original English text translated into German sounds like a major improvement to me (an example of this being Schelmish's 'rabenballade').

Maybe I'm being overly critical here, but what religion believes that people become angels after death?
I've heard that various other places in videos and such before as well, but I was raised Catholic and I know we don't believe that. Do other forms of Christianity?
That always seemed odd to me.

    • @user-dk7qf2ho7c
      @user-dk7qf2ho7c Před 5 lety

i hope i am not too late. i think this "angel thing" is based on old german sayings. it was often told by elder people. another possibility to explain it could be the fact that the people in the countryside were quite pious. maybe the ”good behaviour during lifetime makes you becoming an angel after death" was used to influence the childrens behaviour. i don't know but those explanations might be the origin of this belief.

I think that they are searching for Gott. Aren't the children Richard's older kids?

Petulant children raising their fist to God for not being given what they want I enjoy the song but it was written by man having a temper tantrum a lot echo the sentiment today cause life is too easy. They are lost in a sea of self pity admiring their own reflection & angry at God for what they have done with his gift. Pathetic but it is a good song in away reminds me of Veruca Salt...just a bad egg.
