  • Yellow heat health alerts have been issued as temperatures look set to reach around 30C.
The UK Health Security Agency alerts cover East Midlands, East England, London and the South East from Thursday to Saturday.
It warns that expected hot weather may have minor impacts on the health and social care sector.
The Met Office said temperatures of “around 30C are possible in the South East” and that figures in the mid to upper twenties are “more likely in places” across England and Wales.
Cristo discusses the warnings with political commentator and Talk presenter Russell Quirk.

Er....I was slightly younger and I remember there being no water. Plenty were reduced to using standpipes and there were regular heat warnings, stay-out-of-sun warnings, the electricity grid fried and on and on.
This is just TTV shoe-horning everything into their narrative. Great, healthy adults shouldn't need these warnings - except large swathes of the populace are functionally illiterate so have no idea - but the elderly and sick may well. I need to know for that very reason; ill-health can affect temperature regulation or the perception of heat and early warning means we can take early, more useful measures. Once its already boiling it can be too late.

When I was a child we had 'heat free' from Germany, but only if the temperature, which was measured in the shade, went above 31 degrees Celsius. I believe today they measure it in the sun otherwise I can't explain the reading of the met office being so different from my readings of both, an temperature gauge and my own perception. That was in the 1970s and as school children we planned for heat free and getting an hour or two knocked off school every day from June to End of August. How did we ever survive?
Many years later my husband we had to move to Wales due to my husband's job and we arrived in Summer. On the local radio they spoke about a heat wave and outside it was 22 degrees Celsius. In the town there were people walking about with sun hats and water bottles in their hands and I was shivering along in my Berghaus jacket, because I had not acclimatised, yet.

How about showing us the statistics on how many people in the UK die from heat related causes as opposed to deaths caused by cold related causes. You know...the cold...when cash strapped people cannot afford to heat their homes in winter. I think you will find humans adapt and fare well under high temperatures but tend to succumb to ill health and death in the cold.
