  • Sky News host Alan Jones says PM Scott Morrison should grant "no taxpayers' money" to the University of Newcastle for their "gutless betrayal" to commitment to scholarship, independent thinking and free speech.
The remarks come after former Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile was "forced to withdraw" from his offer of Chancellorship of the University amid backlash by members of staff who were reportedly dissatisfied with his appointment due to his association with the coal industry.
"Mark Vaile, as a former Deputy Prime Minister has all the connections the University could want and he lives close by," Mr Jones said.
"He understands Newcastle's economic challenges. Newcastle is the world's largest coal export port. But an insignificant minority went apoplectic that Mr Vaile was Chairman of Whitehaven Coal.
"But he also Chairs Palisade Investment Partners, which has a billion dollars invested in solar and wind power.
Mr Jones said Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon was among those who came to Mr Vaile's defence, saying the activists were "guilty of a new McCarthyism".
"What should the federal government do?," Mr Jones said.
"Simple. The Prime Minister should say, we're not telling Newcastle University what to do. They are supposed to be an independent institution.
"But ... there will be no taxpayers' money whilever we have the gutless betrayal of one of the central tenets of University education, a commitment to scholarship, independent thinking and free speech.
"Newcastle University should be told to go their own way and see how they manage without taxpayers' money."

Good idea. Shame the 'centre right' failure of a Liberal Party will spinelessly do nothing.

Newcastle was developed from coal money so this is pretty ironic.

Why not just go nuclear and solve this once and for all? We can reduce "our" emissions by stopping coal and iron ore exports to China for a start...

Totally agree with you Allan. Ive said it before..Im so glad my granddaughters are getting a decent education from well educated people that teach them how to think for themselves, how to research..
To strive and be the best they can..not to be a segment of the serpent only.
Hopefully the university my oldest granddaughter has chosen has the same values or it will make things very hard

Operant conditioning states that you should never reward bad behaviour because all that does is reward the individual for their inappropriate behavior - never kowtow to the woke Mob !

Well, I'm glad a supporter of the wealth evaporating unreliables is out of the picture, but I'd have thought a politician would have the kahoonies to give the bird to the 'activists' who are like dust balls under the bed and get on with the appointment.

If you are not with Alan Jones then you must be against Alan Jones' views.
    Is that independent thinking?
The university made its decision whether Jones likes it or not.

    • @joehosken3938
      @joehosken3938 Před 3 lety +1

When all this 'independent thinking' ALL goes the same way, towards the same outcome [whatever the Marxist lunatic activists want] then it isn't very 'independent' then, is it?
It is called "Institutional Capture" m8 when you stack a particular institution with only people of 1 view or ideology. We know the obvious game you are playing.
      Try again.
