This Easy Baked Egg Custard is not only a delicious comfort food but it is also a great way to use up milk! It is a rich, smooth and creamy custard that requires just a few ingredients. This is a recreation of my Great Grandma's recipe that my mom used to make when I was growing up. I didn't have the recipe in front of me so I made it based off of memory and it came out great!
#oldschoolrecipes #oldfashionedbakedcustard #eggcustard
Ingredients:
6 eggs
4 cups milk
2/3 cup sugar
1-2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
nutmeg
cinnamon
Whisk eggs together in a large bowl. Add in salt, vanilla and sugar and mix together well. Heat milk and slowly pour into egg mixture while stirring. Pour into oven safe dish (I used two crocks). Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon. Put about an inch of hot water in the bottom of another oven safe dish to create a water bath. Place dish with custard in the water bath and bake at 350 for 45-60 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
I almost cried when I saw this. When I was a little kid we would beg my Mom to make this.
It was an expensive dessert, she used 12 eggs in her recipe for a big pot of it. It was so good and I'd ask for this rather than a cake for my birthday. The recipe was all in her head, like most of her great recipes. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread and she passed away. I lost so many recipes. Her homemade cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving and Christmas. All the almond cookies. But what hurt the most was the Egg Custard. Every restaurant that said they had it either had rice in it or tapioca. NO.
YOUR RECIPE IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE MADE. No nutmeg, no cinnamon. Just pure pristine egg custard. When you spooned it and it giggled and left those waves in the custard I knew I finally found it. I STILL have her custard pan. Praying some day I would find the same recipe. 59 years later I have it. I wish my Dad was still alive to eat it with me. He passed at 95.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Now I need a tissue.
I loved reading this, thank you for sharing. I hope it tastes like you remember❤️
Alicia, this brought tears to my eyes, FINALLY, someone who knows and understands what a baked egg custard means. I'm probably too old, but if anyone remembers Horn & Hardart, they will recall the egg custard in those little windows...in later years you could buy prepackaged little custard cups from this restaurant. We loved egg custard...good for kids and old ladies like me. Sending you love & hugs for the memories, gonna make this asap.
Thank you so much! I just do it the way my mom and grandma did and it is good stuff. I'm not familiar with Horn & Hardart but it sounds like good memories from there custard😊I hope you enjoy, thanks for watching!💛
My grandmother made egg custard in a pre-made pie crust. She sprinkled a powder on top but it wasn’t cinnamon I don’t think. It was so good. I wish she was alive to make it again. I’m going to try to find her recipe. I’ve got them somewhere.
I remember Horn and Hardarts``
They had great coffee
Memories of custard at Gene Comptons.
Mine's in the oven now!
I remember Horn & Hardart ! Their tapioca pudding with nutmeg was wonderful, as was their custard pie !
My mom used to make custard like this and would save half of the egg whites to make a meringue for the top and she would put left over rice in it and called it rice pudding :) she would let us eat it in the winter while it was still warm. Thanks for sharing your recipe :)
Thanks for sharing how your mom used to do hers. Those are great ideas and I bet great memories for you!
My Mum used to make this mostly in the winter time for dessert she would sometimes add rice other times spaghetti but mostly it was bread and butter custard as we called it by adding a couple of slices of bread that she would spread butter on and leave that to float on the top my favourite part of the custard the nice crunch of the bread yummy
This was something my 100 year old grandma remembered her mother making for her growing up and as her caregiver it was something easy that I was able to make for her during the last few months of her life that she was always happy to eat, even when her dementia affected her appetite. Thank you for posting the recipe, I just wanted to let you know what it meant to us. 💜
Thank you for sharing your story!🥰 I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed seeing the recipe and it reminded you of what you used to make for your grandma, that her mother made for her😊
Sweet story. ❤
Just what I'm craving. Depressed me brought me here. And it's baking now can't wait to eat the whole thing by myself. Thank you
I hope you enjoy it Jennifer. I could eat the whole thing myself too!😁
Lol... me too!
I’m exactly the same. I find cooking helps immensely with my mood .
Custard is in the oven as I speak.
Hoping it’s edible 🙏
Ditto
Best comment ever!
Thank you for this recipe. It brought back many memories with my mom who has passed away from Cancer.I’ve often thought about this recipe and could not remember it but my mom would make it to put a smile on my face😊 thank you ! 💜
I make this all the time only I use 100% heavy cream and I only use 5 eggs. Turns out perfect every time. A water bath is a must.
As much as I don't like doing water baths, I agree they are a must for things like this! Thanks for watching!
When we used to "Go To Work On An Egg" days...
We make this all the time in the carribean. You can also add condensed milk and custard power to jazz it up. Sometimes we steam it for 45min on the stove if you don't feel like lighting the oven. Great stuff.
It is good stuff, I'll have to try it with condensed milk one of these times! Good tip for steaming it on the stove too, thanks!!
I think you can also use condensed milk, long time I don't have it .
This is an excellent dish for the steaming technique. More gentle on the eggs than an oven. I imagine you could use any kind of milk you choose. Naturally the flavor profile will reflect that.
Omg I have years trying to find this recipe the smell and taste never leave my memory omg thank you so much by the way I grow up in Costa Rica my grandmother used to make it ❤
I made the keto version of this using heavy cream and erythritol instead and it was deeelish! And btw, I could eat that whole ramekin by myself!
Thanks for sharing, can I ask how much erythritol you used?
@@22anamae I can't really remember--I usually just measure by sight but I'd say maybe 1/3 of a cup? But on your erythritol package, it should give you the conversion from sugar to erythritol. She uses 2/3 of a cup of sugar here.
Finally, a custard recipe that is actually a custard and not a sauce. Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching!
My mum made this when we were poorly. It was easy to digest and tasty.
Yes, it is good for that! Thanks for watching, Cathy!
I always have way too many eggs my hens are good layers. So this is a great recipe for extra eggs. My custard is in the oven, I hope it turns out well and if it does I see a lot of custard in my future.
Yum thanks for reminding about this lovely dish.
Even more yummy poured out into a pastry case prior to baking - Traditional English Custard Tart!
Thank you for the straightforward video explanation
I love how practical home- making used to be(and still is in some people's homes). I am obsessed with custards, creams, etc. This looks so delicious!
I agree! So many recipes were based on things not going to waste. That is how this one came to be in our family! This is such a yummy way to use up milk! Thanks for watching my friend!💛
I'm looking for a good caramel custard recipe, always a favorite when I was a child!
Oh did you bring back some memories! Many many times I remember that my grandmother would make custard pie. I miss her and her custard pies!
I really loved it!!! Thanks for the recipe 💛. If anyone wants to make a slightly smaller version with stevia this is what I used:
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 tablespoons of stevia
- the rest is the same
- I used 6 ramekins (9cm or 3 1/2 inch diameter)
I'm glad you loved it! Thanks for watching!
Exactly what I just did- 1/2 the quantity of ingredients
Do you remember what temperature you baked it at? And for how long? I keep listening to the video and can’t find where she said it.
@@AliciaLynnYT What temp and for about how long?
@@peopleslave 350F for 45minutes
I add frozen mixed berries with some sugar in a pan and boil till there is juice let it cool add it to the custard when its cooked then beat up 2 egg white put that ontop and put back in the oven until the ppeaks are slightly browned
Thank you for the recipe. I've been looking for this ~ the simple, old-fashioned, real deal. But just as much, I love all the memories it's brought up for people, and all the sweet and touching stories they've shared. Food seems to do that more than any other experience. Thank you everyone for your stories. ❤
My grandmother made this. It has been so many years since I have had it. I'll have to make one. Thanks for jogging an old memory.
Okay, I made one. It is cooling now and I am looking forward to seeing how close it is to what I remember. I was going to include a pic, but I'm not sure how to do that. I think it looks good. Thanks again Alicia.
Unfortunately CZcams doesn't let you do pics. I would have loved to see how it turned out! I hope you enjoyed it!!
How did it turn out?
I put the full 2 tsp of essence & cooked it for 60mins. I used full cream milk & it came out beautifully. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing and for watching, Teresa!
Thank you so much for this quick & easy egg custard recipe. I absolutely loved it. My daughter loved it & she requested me to make it after she has some teeth removed. It’s just like what my mom used to make. Now, I’m looking for an old fashioned creamy rice pudding recipe.
My pleasure 😊
My mom would use leftover rice and put canned fruit in it and make pudding , that change it a little from plain rice pudding
That was Way back in the 50s 👍
My Grandma lived through the Depression Era. I stayed with her alot growing up. Many food's she made was still from back in that Era. She would regularly make either egg custard, rice pudding, or a Mayonnaise cake. And OMGOSH they All tasted soooo so good!! My mom had the original recipes My Grandma had wrote down. Through the year's they were lost, so I never knew how to make them.
THIS!! Brings me back to my Grandma's kitchen! It taste exactly like her recipe! I can't thank you enough for sharing this!!
I love that, April! Thanks so much for sharing!!💛
Hi Alicia just came across your video and it’s just as my mother-in-law used to make it. I’ve made it this afternoon and I used lactose free milk and to my surprise and happiness it has come out very tasty. Just to let all who have to have lactose free milk that we don’t have to miss out 😊. Thanks for the recipe x
Thank you for letting me and others know it works well with lactose free milk as well!
This was such a great recipe! I’ve never made a baked custard before. The cinnamon and nutmeg was such a flavorful addition to the top. That’s a great idea for extra milk. Awesome job!
Thanks Lisa! This is so good and easy to make! Thanks as always for watching!💕
I'm so happy I can make custard without corn flour. Thankyou.
I love baked custards
I used to make this 30 years ago, but i couldn't remember the eggs to milk ratio. Thank you so much. Ive bern looking for this recipe for long time, and all tge other recipes are a different kind of egg custard. Its addicing.
I remember eating this as a child, and I'm so happy to find a similar recipe to my mom's. thank you!
I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
Smells so excellent while it's cooking, they should make this for a diffuser or a wax scent!! a candle!! custard scented...
I made custard all the time when I was younger, not sure why I stopped. I've recently had health issues that require a low fiber, high calorie diet and was racking my brain on what I could try that wouldn't make me sick. Custard popped in my brain so I searched and found your recipe. It's just like the one I always used and I'll be making it right away. I will be using whole milk, or maybe half and half to boost the calorie count. Thanks for the recipe and also for helping me finally decide to make the leap to cherry butcher block counter tops. Yours are lovely.
I'm sorry to hear about your health issues, this custard definitely would fit your dietary needs it sounds like. Especially if you used whole milk or something with a higher fat content. I hope you enjoy it! Wishing you improved health!
Thank you for making this lovely custard so easy to understand and do. I made this for my mom today who has not had it in decades. (she is 80) It will be hard to stop her from eating it until tomorrow’s Easter celebration. ❤
My pleasure. I'm glad your mom enjoyed it!😊💛
Looks amazing. I've always loved egg custard tart. Earliest memory is of my English Grandma making it x
💛😊
Mm so good.A Boss of mine in Staten Island in New York taught me how to do this for her Mom. She taught me to make this the same way you did 😊I now remember how it is made I can make it for my husband he will love it.🎉❤ kudos to you 💘😌
Hope you both enjoy!
Hi Alicia, I just made this, following your recipe, I used whole milk it turns out just like you said it will. Thank you so very much, I absolutely love it
Thanks so much for letting me know you made it, I'm glad you love it!!
This looks amazing! I've seen this recipe in my old Good housekeeping cookbook and I have never tried it but wanted to. I'm so glad you explained about the scalding milk. That makes total sense. I would use the microwave too. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to be making this sometime this week. 🤗🤗🤗
It is an oldie but goodie! It always reminds me of my childhood when I make it! Thanks for watching, Vicki! 💛
If the milk isn't scalded when making yogurt, it turns out to be a runny mess, no yogurt. I don't know what scalding does, but sometimes makes a difference. Thanks for the video, it looks great.
Good to know, thanks!
@@AliciaLynnYT you are welcome, it’s always nice when people share with each other
Excellent recipe for old faschioned baked custard. It looks delicious.
Thank you, it is good stuff!
Thank you so much! Will be making this for Christmas Dinner.
Hope you enjoy!
I accidently ordered two dozen eggs in my online order today and was craving something sweet.. I had extra 1% milk as well and decided to make this at nearly 10 o'clock at night. I scalded the milk on the stovetop and mixed everything in the Kitchen Aid real quick. I'm having a scheduled cesarean in two days so I'm treating myself! I love custard, I can't believe I've never made it before! I'll update with how it taste!
I hope it turns out well for you, it is yummy stuff! And how exciting to be having a cesarean soon! You definitely deserve to treat yourself! Thanks for watching!
Just had a little bowl with my morning coffee 💕 so tasty! Waiting for my boys to wake up to share!
Yes! My first was a homebirth turned cesarean and since then I've discovered some anatomical issues and we are so thankful for modern medicine to deliver our babygirl safely!
@@mads855 I'm glad you enjoyed it! Wishing you a safe and healthy birth! 💛

This is just like my mom’s recipe! I’ve been searching custard recipes for hrs & finally found the one that looks like what my mom used to make. Thank you for sharing!
I'm glad to hear that! Thanks for watching, Athena!
i've done the very same thing for the same reason.
Me, too! My mom is 91 and I’m making it for us. Surprise Mom!
It's insane how 3 or 4 simple ingredients make such delicious desserts. Zabaglione, panna cotta, traditional custards....
I totally agree!
This looks so good! Thanks for sharing. I tried to follow a recipe and make a custard once. I wasn't sure what a custard was supposed to look and taste like. Mine certainly didn't look as delicious and creamy as yours! Yummy! I'm totally going to use the water bath technique if I ever try again! This is awesome Alicia! Thanks for sharing!
Hi LaDay! Some custards are not as firm as this one is but I like the firmer texture of this one. The water bath does help this to turn out better than without it! It is yummy stuff! Thanks for watching my friend!💛
This is absolutely yummer's ville. a little Nutmeg...👍🏻
It is so yummy! Thanks for watching, Tracey!💕
YES!! 🥰
Pretty cool old skool treat. Not to mention a great use for old milk instead of throwing it out.
It definitely beats throwing out milk. This stuff takes me back to my childhood! Thanks for watching TJ!
Super delicious! My second batch now! Oh using farm fresh eggs and milk! So creamy! To die for!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I can imagine fresh farm eggs and milk would put this over the top!
Made it yesterday, it came out perfect.
Glad to hear it, Marilyn! Thanks for watching!
Loved it! Thank you!
You nailed it! Looks delicious.
Thanks Kory! I was happy I remembered how to do it! Lol
Xcellent cooking.😊 very simple 😊
Hi Alicia, baked custard is one of our families favorites, it’s just a real comfort food! When my youngest Beau was a baby he loved it and would eat it all the time! I also like to add cinnamon but definitely going to try nutmeg next time! Just delicious, really enjoyed watching 🧡
Hi Louise! Custard is such a comfort food, I love it! Both of my kids love it too. I made it for them since it isn't exactly WW friendly. Lol The nutmeg is nice on there if you like nutmeg. Thanks as always for watching sweet friend! 💛
If you use nutmeg don't put too much as it's quite a strong flavour
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME
If you have individual ramekins, this recipe fills 6/8 oz. FYI This was my first desert recipe when I was twelve (50 yrs ago), for a Boy Scout cooking merit badge. Thx for the nostalgia.
Great idea on using the individual ramekins! And I love that you made this 50 years ago for a cooking badge!
I had actually got the ramekins for bread pudding. I'm single and they keep long enough in a plastic bag, refrigerated. I like the crusty part on top of bread pudding 😂. My custard came out great (I ate three since yesterday). Thx again for the recipe and nostalgia, again. 💕 God bless.
I just watched your video instruction while searching for a baked custard recipe. I used one last week and baked it in a prepared pie crust. It turned out good, but I'd prefer just the custard without the pie crust. So, tonight that's what I was looking for when I found this recipe. I'm off to try your recipe!
I hope you enjoyed it!
You solved my texture problem. I need to use a water bath!! Thank you for the great instructions.
And I love your beautiful counter/table top!!!! It's gorgeous!!
Hi, Rebecca, a water bath does help a lot! Thank you so much!
Looks good and different than the same o same o! Thanks for sharing! The kids would love!
It is good stuff! Thanks for watching, Tiffany!💕
These look so yummy! The cinnamon and nutmeg on top makes it look even better 💕💕. You have the best recipes! Have a wonderful day ❤️❤️
Thanks Jen! I think the cinnamon and nutmeg add to the overall flavor of this! Thanks for watching my friend! 💕
I’ve never made custard, but you made it look so easy! I’m going to give it a try! It looks really good 😋
This custard is really easy which is one of the things I love about it! Thanks for watching! 💛
How long does I have to baked it in the oven
Wow, wow, wow! Thank you so much! This is what my mom and grandma would make and I never could replicate. I just had some after following your recipe and it’s everything I remember. I’m so blessed to have found your channel! Blessings to you!
I'm happy to hear it tastes like what your mom and grandma made! I was aiming for the same thing when I made it and it ended up being like what I remembered too. Thanks for letting me know, Barbara!
Thank you I’ve been looking for this recipe for years. 👍I forgot the exact ingredients, I made this as a child.
My pleasure 😊
Thank for sharing I haven’t ever made this my momma made custard with rice in it and I don’t like it that way just plane custard thanks again god bless
Looks so good! Mine are cooling down right now and it's so tempting to just eat them right away, lol. Thanks for the recipe! :D

Thank you, Peggy and God bless you!
This is a very simple and tasty recipe. I added coconut flakes and they toasted on the top. Thanks. ❤️🌱
Great idea!
Fantastic..Followed recipe to a tee .!! Woderful ! Thank you for sharing1
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Yummy looks amazing
Thank you!
Yummy I'm definitely going to try this recipe next time🤤, I normally just make custard on the stove top when needing to use milk up, my boys love it for a dessert! But this is a nice firmer custard, so maybe not as much mess from my little ones when they eat this 🤔😆👍 never knew what the water bath was for either so leant something new ❤
If you can have less mess with the little ones that would be a plus! 😄😃The water bath does help it to cook more evenly. I have done it with and without and it comes out better with. Thanks for watching, Jacqui!💛💜
In addition to what Alicia said, the water bath also provides moisture to the custard and keeps it from cracking on the top of the baked custard.
Wonderful!
Thank you, Marissa!
my nanny made this, my dad made this now i make it for myself. so good. i use can milk with water added.
This looks amazing!!! So rich and silky. I love that it’s only a handful of ingredients, most of which are in our fridge and pantry. I definitely have to make this custard, thanks for sharing Alicia ❤️
Hi Susy! It is really good and really easy! I love how the older recipes were a lot of times simpler! Thanks for watching!💕
Yum!
Thanks, it is good stuff!
My Gramma made this for me when I was little! I hated milk and eggs made me sick. She figured this would fill in those holes in my diet! She sometimes added coconut, yum.
Smart Gramma! Coconut would be yummy in this. Thanks for watching, Nancy!
Grew up on a Minnesota dairy farm. Milk was not a problem and was usually 4.5% whole milk. Mom had problems with her custard coming out sort of watery for whatever reason. I've seen some folks add a bit of corn starch which might fix that problem.
I have to give this a try
It is yummy and easy!
Delicious
I am going to make this! The finished product looks exactly like the one my grandfather used to make. Thank you for the video!
Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching!
@@AliciaLynnYT I let it chill overnight and it WAS just how I'd hoped! Yum! I see how have some Weber Smokey Mountain videos too. I just bought one of those yesterday so I will check those out! 🎄

I have never had a custard 😋 but it looks so yummy!! I remember at church functions ladies would bring this dish and I was always afraid to try it😆 Yours looks yummy!!!
I can see how you would be afraid to try it! Lol It doesn't look the most appealing but it is delicious and so easy to make! Thanks for watching, Crystal!
Looks great yummy have a great week 🏵️🌞
Thanks! Have a great week yourself!💛
Yum 😋
Thanks, they are a childhood favorite of mine!
I'm making this with whipping cream! I love custard... Randomly wondering how flan is any different but I love them both! ❤😋
They are both similar but different in texture and flavor, mainly. Also in the way they are made. Custard is lighter and has a more milder flavor than flan. Both good though!
I like how this is easier to make in comparison to flan. Plus, I don't have to deal with hot caramel. - Also, less calories. Haha Looks so creamy and delicious. We would enjoy this for sure. :-)
This is less calories than flan but flan is really yummy too! Now I want that! Lol
So glad I found your video! - I am not feeling well due to Covid... (positive - ugh!) and just made myself some baked egg custard per your instructions... it came out delicious! Luckily my sense of taste is still working well! Cheers!
I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well because of Covid! I hope you get to feeling better soon and I'm glad you still have your sense of taste! Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed this!
Mmm even nicer in a pastry case,,
Thanks for watching!

Looks yummy. My school favourite was Apple Crumble smothered in English Custard. Or if you want to be posh Creme Anglaise. U.K
Sounds delicious!
My grandfather would have slapped me across the face If I spilt that bit of milk on the nice table like that.
He grew up during the Holodomor & it really messed him up. Thanks for the video. I read a few recipe's but it's far better to see a video like this done in real life.
That looks damn gooooooood!!!!!
