Here's the straight scoop . When the Central valley project was in the planning stages many people were distrustful of politicians trying to ram rod it thru . It was supposed to pump only excess runoff water south in wet years and curtail and even stop pumping in dry years . The fish and wildlife in the Ca. Delta was to be closely monitored and trigger water export reductions if the Delta Ecosystem was suffering . The Delta Smelt was to be the primary barometer species as it was deemed the most at risk . The smelt population has been trending downward ever since they started taking surveys of their numbers .
Pollution, predatory species , drought everything they could think up was deemed responsible the decline of the smelt except for the obvious over pumping Delta water south . This was a quote from those who warned about the Central Valley Project from the beginning "As the Delta Smelt goes , so goes all species of wildlife in the Delta".

The delta tunnel only supplies people down south. It doesn’t apply to the rest of the state.

What are they doing about the striped bass and the largemouth bass that are in the Delta they are invasive species and prey on the delta smelt? Are they trying to eradicate them?

Piss-poor management strikes again. We pay top dollar for it here in CA.

We apparently don’t have enough water to support our local needs, I’m not sure why we are allowing Southern California to take the water. They could and should build capacity in their area or concentrate on desalination projects. Keep natural resources local.

The farmers are essential and your politicians want to profit from them at a level that the farmers don't get paid for their work.

Ag uses 70% of the water in the state residents and business use less then 5% while the state does nothing to stop AG from growing unsustainable crops, growing rice in a desert environment? Corn? Alfalfa? fruit and vegetable crops? its all about the money people and who cares about invasive striper fish..they should have no limits

You're right with the exception of the striped bass. Stripers have coexisted for over a hundred years in CA and were never a problem. We had large salmon runs up until the 90's. Big AG and pumping water South has killed off most of the salmon. Irrigation districts pay companies to study rivers and fish and in return they get bogus reports on how stripers are decimating the salmon population when in reality its agriculture. Every fish with the exception of a few trash fish eat other fish. When a river is reduced to a trickle it's one big Smörgåsbord with no place to hide. Hell the population of stripers in our river systems have declined signigicantly the last 5 years. Ag is destoying our environment. They need fair limits on how much water they can take but they think they should get it all.
